If It Isn’t Glued Down…

IMG_3145

The fact is, much to the chagrin of The Husband and Robert The Carpenter, if it isn’t glued down, I will in time move it. Just the facts, ma’am.

Robert will work his magnificent carpentry skills in my house, then happen to come inside one day and say, “Well, where’s such and such?”

IMG_3133

It’s banished to another room. Or being used for something else. Or temporarily in the garage. That’s where it is. Robert is a single man. He doesn’t understand such tomfoolery, it is abundantly apparent.

Here’s Robert outside working on the flower bed border and little pond redo. I call this “the thinking pose.” (Of course he doesn’t know I’m in the house photographing him! Oh, I’m so wicked.)

IMG_3105

Here’s what all he’s pondering.

IMG_3079

They’ve stopped asking why something is not where it was the day before. It’s a moot point.

IMG_3148

When I start tidying up, I’m going to look at whatever it is I’m dusting and think: Now that would look good over there. And off it goes to a new nesting spot. Temporarily, that is.

I brought in an old red bench that has sat out in the elements a few years. Just the perfect chippy shabbiness we long for.

IMG_3141

As you can see, I’ve moved the large red bench that was in this spot to the left side of the couch. (Well, maybe you can’t see. I’ve got so much stuff around it.) But oh, let me tell you why. There’s actually a reason for that piece getting moved.

Here, I took another photo. You can see a little bit of it here. You’ll understand why I’ve got it wedged against the wall in a minute, out of harm’s way.

IMG_3144

See Bonnie and Charlie getting along so handsomely below? Well, it doesn’t work out quite the same way with Abi and the cats. Abi has a little jealousy problem. On Friday, after my birthday dinner, I was in the kitchen doing something. The Husband was sitting on the couch and Bonnie happened to get up close to him. All I know is the next thing I hear furniture getting knocked over, a screeching hissing cat, and my little pretties rolling across the floor.

Apparently Abi had seen that Bonnie was getting some attention and jumped smack in the middle of her. Bonnie is like a body of water. She just spills across a space. A hefty girl. Whilst jumping, Abi hit the edge of both the red and the black bench in front of the couch, sending them flying. My dough board with candles broke and the candles rolled hither and yon. Cat hair was flying. This Mama hears this racket and comes flying out of the kitchen with dish towel in hand. I start whopping Abi with it. Charlie is so frightened he jumps up and down my leg, begging me to pick him up and get him away from the fray. Suddenly my little garden room is a complete mess in a matter of about ten seconds.

IMG_3143

Here’s the little beast looking innocent as a lamb. Don’t let looks deceive you. Or weight. She’s the smallest pet in the house. And by far the meanest. I call her Crabby Abi for a reason, you know.

IMG_3142

So that set me to moving things about. I can’t move the glass wraparound desk, as it’s probably not possible. Or I’d already have done so. But don’t count me out on that one yet either. And the bookshelves. Those are a little hard to deal with too. So they tend to stay in the same spot.

IMG_3151

Off topic, I found this red napkin holder in the back of a cabinet yesterday. Decided I could use it to display my notebooks of house and garden inspiration.

IMG_3146

Anyway, the dough bowl got glued back together. Miraculously nothing else got broken. Or I might have worn out that poor dish towel on Abi’s behind. She managed to bite Bonnie’s ear while in her rage. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the other three pets don’t teach her a lesson and jump in the middle of her one day. Such is the life of a pet mom.

There was one question about where I saw a sign last week, and it was near Chandler, Texas. Just outside of Tyler, and just before you get to Edom.

I feel your pet pain! :) It took my little starving-rescued kitty about 2 months to "feel welcome" from my older cat and my grand dog who stays with us off and on. The little cat, while weighing in at just 3 1/2 lb. spent her first week hissing "just in case"! Now, they love each other (well, the cats do). They play chase and they even groom each other.....once in awhile they have a little "spat", but so far nothing serious.

I loved the photo of your sofa (looks like a leather one) covered with lovely blankets...and your pets lying on it. I keep our leather sofa and chair covered at all times...and even with that, we've got a few claw scratches on them. At least it's easy to keep the animal hair under control that way! :)

Hope your snow is a pretty one....you Texas folks can enjoy it for a change. We northern folks are sick of it!

Have a good evening!! Dana

Brenda - I just love reading your posts. You always have a great story to tell and I love listening. I must say though that I am extremely jealous that you have your own personal carpenter. My husband is a general contractor and I'm like the cobbler's wife whose children have no shoes! I have all kinds of plans for the cottage that are well ... on hold. Now as far as moving things around, is there any other way to live? If there is I don't know about it.

Love,
Susan and Bentley

Love the photos, can't wait to see what Robert's next project will look like.
Pets are pets you want them to behave and usually they do,but when you have multiple pets you can expect little tiffs and spats.
I really miss having a pet in the house.I travel so much in the summer I don't think its fair to be away from home so long and have a pet, one day I will slow down and when that happens I will get another pet.
Had a sweet little beagle pup from 6 weeks old till she died, that sweetie was my hairy third kid.. before her we had a little mixed breed pup he was so loving but got killed by a car one day broke my heart.
Never had a cat but I surely love my daughter's.... maybe this will be the next pet when its time.... not sure..
Love all your pics Brenda !

Hi Brenda,

Your red table has the perfect amount of shabbiness. I love the teapot with the red bow and polka dots in the curio cabinet. Your pictures are so unbelievably clear. I feel like I am in your house. I have a great post idea for you, "Photo tips for bloggers". What do you think?

Oh my! Sorry about your dough bowl! :( Your pets are so adorable - sorry they don't get along. Would love to have a reliable handy man that did not charge an arm and a leg.

hi brenda,

i have been doing lots of rearranging lately, too. kind of like an episode of "decorating cents" where they make over a room using what you already have. your men may not understand, but your bloggers sure do! :)

Hey Brenda! Oh, my goodness. Bad baby!! Pets can do some funny things sometimes. Sorry about your brokenness but sounds like you got it all fixed back up.
Now I love seeing your home and you just keep scootin' things around and showin' us. I love it.

Funny about things moving around. My husband gets the same blank look sometimes when he thinks things are set for the lifetime and I am saying now what next or moving things around. He is always surprised, but isn't that our job to keep them guessing.

I am with you--why leave a piece of furniture or a nick nack where it is ---when it just might need to go some place else!!! and yes I have also rearranged my place in the past for a "critter"--sometimes even one can be a hazard to our "pretties"!!

The changes in your home scenery are too much fun! I've yet to rearrange for my current critters however, but for one in the past who was blind - yes, I did arrange much of the house for his comfort. I love my pets!

I love you home! I like that you move your "toys" and play with them. I think it is fun. Makes cleaning more fun when you do these things! Love visiting with your creatures too!

It's really no wonder how you came up with the name of your blog. Your house has got to be the coziest I've ever seen! I love it all, especially those red and white quilts. I mean doggie and kitty blankies!

I love your beautiful home and your pets always look very content! I guess they think they can get away with anything! lol I have the hardest time remembering to answer questions. I still need to write you and let you know that opening my blog in Internet Explorer allowed me to move things around in my sidebar! WHEW! I thought I would never remember to THANK YOU for that! HUGS! ♥ You are so sweet! ♥

Now Brenda... you know you love all your fur babies the same!??

Thanks for mentioning my giveaway. I spent the afternoon visiting EVERY single one of my followers! (Granted it's not that many, but still.)

I just wanted them to all to be aware that they are entered in the giveaway. I read their blogs and had lots of fun. Took awhile, I usually don't visit everyone... every day!

You are so right about not being able to contact some people. I used my dashboard bloglist to contact them . Some people haven't filled out their profile to include their blog/website link. So there was no way to get to their blog but to click on the comments that they have left for me. Emails are nice to have too.

Talk to you soon ;)

Oh our dear pet children!! Saturday a bird flew in the house cuz I had the door open while I was working outside. Anyhow Gus caught it after knocking over several potted African violets etc! Needless to say it was not a pretty sight when I came in!!!!
He knew I was not happy but what can I do..it was already done.

HI! BRENDA,

WHY LEAVE FURNITURE IN THE SAME PLACE?? IT'S SO MUCH FUN TO MOVE IT AND GET A NEW "LOOK!" HOWEVER, IF MY HUSBAND NEEDS TO GET UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, HE DOES CARRY A FLASHLIGHT JUST SO HE DOESN'T "KILL" HIMSELF!! LOL

WE HAVE CATS AND DOGS, TOO, AND SOMETIMES THERE ARE LITTLE ARGUMENTS, BUT FOR THE MOST PART, THEY ARE FINE WITH EACH OTHER.

HAVE A GOOD REST OF THE WEEK!

Always such lovely comfy home photos. I love to rearrange with what I've got and make things look fresh and new again. Sometime my husband agrees with the changes and sometimes not, but for the most part, he could care less. The home is my domain to do with what I want. I have a friend whose husband won't let her do a thing with decorating. What's up with that? I buy her things to hang on the wall and hang it while I am there so he can't complain. HA! There's not a bit of blank wall space in my place. I just can't imagine living with bare parts (even corners get filled). Sorry to hear that your pets caused such chaos. Jingles is always up to something. Oh well! If it gets broken, I figure I didn't really need it after all. Have a fabulous day. Blessings, Tammy

I am the same way. At one point a few weeks ago, my 10 year old actually came up and asked why I have not moved anything around for a few weeks...he said he loves it when I make a few changes on a regular basis...and was wondering if I was just busy, or if I was sick! lol

We've definitely got some sibling rivalry issues here, too, but the cats rule. What they lack in size, they make up for in paw swats. My husband used to work nights, and I'd rearrange the furniture so much I used to call and warn him so he wouldn't fall over things in the dark.

Brenda Lots of commotion with your dear little pets..ah poor Abi..I hope she got some loving after the teatowel taps.
Your home is so cheerful and filled w/ color..a welcome respite on this cold dreary grey winter day!Heh I have that same lamp as you showcase..I did not apply the creative add on..looks great!
You are so neat and organized I must say..I need you here to organize my office!
I love what you did with the Singer sewing machine in your sidebar photo! I have a Singer mother left for me..I'd like to make it into a table..Hard to do?? Would love to hear from you on this. I enjoyed my visit..
BTW..cannot believe that Texas got ((((SNOW))) this year!!

The way you move around your furniture and decor sounds like me with my plants outside. I think rearranging things is a lot of fun, trying out new looks or combinations of things. Plus, it's free! :)

Oh golly gee! The second from last photo. The blue dish which is made to look like a big leaf. We had a pink one of those... Big one as bottom of Chip & Dip set and small one, as top. [Is anyone old enough to remember when Chip & Dip sets were all the rage? We must have gotten 8-9 of them, for Wedding etc. presents.]

Anyway, the big bottom pink "leaf" held the chips. And a small pink "leaf" was suspended above, and held the Dip. :-)

Thank you for the memory!

Hi Brenda,
Crabby Abi certainly does LOOK adorable and sweet! And the way you're using the benches now looks great ... sorry you had to go through such trauma along the way. Glad you were able to repair that wonderful dough bowl (more character now, right?). ;)

I feel your pain. I've lived with two beautiful cats who absolutely despised each other. What dramatic, operatic arias they used to perform late at night, or very early in the mornings! There was breakage of course ... crystal glassware ... a favorite lamp unfortunate enough to be in the path of their screetching, scratching, hissing battles (in which they often seemed to go airborne). Ah memories!

Hope the rest of your week goes well.

Bill

I have a little demon dog also. We call her the demon seed. Her real name is Sugar, but she is anything but sweet. She is a choodle (chihuaha/poodle), and definately has the worst of both in her! She terrorizes all the other dogs in the house, including our chow. But they take it, so what can you do. Although Fat Dog has gotten in her face a couple of times:)
