A Make-Do Gardeners Potting Bench

IMG_5295

There just comes a time in a gardener’s life when they realize that they need a potting bench. I purchased a wooden one at a consignment shop a few years ago. But it didn’t seem to hold up to the elements. So it ended up here…

Yes, it is in my kitchen holding pots and pans and teapots.

I found this old vintage table at a local antique mall. I like the painted detail on this table top. I’ve never seen one quite like this.

I had been looking for some time for a table that wouldn’t fall apart outside. I got this one for around $50. There’s a leaf on two ends of it to pull out for a bigger space in which to work.

There is a coffee cup in two opposite corners. Does anyone know when this might have been produced? Or remember it being in someone’s kitchen?

Anyway, I find it rather endearing. Kind of reminds me of the “I Love Lucy” era. I placed a shelf I already had on top for storage.

I put my plant fertilizer in vintage jars for easy access.

And I’m already enjoying homegrown tomatoes! They taste so much better than what you buy.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

  1. I love your potting bench, Brenda- the table is an awesome solution! You can just wipe it right off, and I love the drawer, too! Great idea!

  2. I’m still lacking a potting bench, but one day I’ll find one! I was looking at how you are using your glass ball jars for your “bloom booster” stuff. I like that idea! Time for some more vintage ball jars! :-)

  3. Oh, I absolutely love your table. What a treasure and a great find. I love the top. I think it might be from the 40′s. Seems like I remember my aunt having something similar in her kitchen when I was little. Love it. Hugs, Marty

  4. I’m on the lookout for a potting bench too. Our backyard isn’t up to par yet (and I’m not sure when it will be!) but I have plans in my head and sketches on paper. Fresh tomatoes are definitely in both! ::Jill

  5. I think your potting table is cool! The fact that you have the ability to make it larger is a big plus. To be honest, I have a potting bench but I usually pot my plants on the grass! I use my potting bench mostly to wash my veggies from the garden and recapture the water to use again (I put a sink in it last year).

You are so far ahead of Georgia! I’m just getting little green tomatoes. Yours look so good! There’s nothing like a warm sun ripened tomato!

  6. Love the table. I haven’t seen anything like that one. Your pictures are so good. The tomatoes look like a painting. ((((HUGS)))

  7. Its from the late 30′s – mom and dad had one like it – porcelain top with pull out leaves – and the base used to be just plain stained wood. Mom painted it black after while, as well as the legs. It was in our kitchen and we ate lunches on it at noon before going back to school. Later on when they added the screened porch, we used it for crafts, and for her oil painting and glass cutting projects. Wonderful memories!

  8. wow this is great! I love it and love how you used your potting bench inside …I love your past post as well…I can see all the photos in Country Home or like….Hugs,Mica

  9. You knew what you were doing when you put the other table in your kitchen — something better was coming your way and now you have both in the perfect spot! Lovely! Annie

  10. Cute little potting bench and oh so handy to have. Lucky you already tomatoes. We won’t have any until July. Mimi

  11. Perfect! Lucky you.

  12. Perfect! Lucky you.

  13. I would say the 30′s or 40′s – those enamel top tables were very popular then. I love them and have always been attracted to them. Love the design on yours, Brenda. Happy potting!

  14. Love the potting bench-

can you believe it? Honey’s first year retired…and we don’t have a garden. I’d love me some home grown tomatoes…Maybe i’ll get some in the fall. I’ve got little starters in a pot, but it is already hot here in SouthEast TX

    Your’s look yummie!

  15. Neat table Brenda! I’ve never seen a motif like that either. The tomatoes are looking good!

  16. I can’t believe this…I have a table just like that only RED. I got it free at a garage sale about 25years ago and my daughters doll house sits on it…wow. Love it.

  17. I love your potting bench. I have a wooden one outside, but you’re right, it hasn’t held up well to the elements. Yours looks fabulous! We have little itsy bitsy green tomatoes right now. Can’t wait to get some to eat. Just put tomato cages up today. Hope they’ll do the trick. We’re still learning so much as we make our kitchen garden. I hope you get lots of enjoyment out of your wonderful potting area.

  18. What a cute table! I can’t believe you have tomatoes already, we just got our plants at the farmers mkt. today!

  19. Brenda, your potting bench is perfect.
Enjoy your tomatoes. There is nothing better than a home grown tomato with a little salt and pepper. Mine better hurry up!!!
    Tracy

  20. I jealous of your tomatoes! It will be a long time before my Romas and cherry tomatoes are ripe. I just buy sandwich tomatoes from the farmer’s market.

  22. Hi,
I just found your blog through Mica’s and love it so far. I also live in Texas and have a little yorkie. Love that table, although I’ve never seen one just like that.
    Leslie

  23. Like the new potting bench. Ripe tomatoes from the garden! Wow! We are just putting the plants in the ground here in Oregon and it is still cold. Yikes! I need some sunshine.

  24. Those tomatoes look delicious!! Enjoy one for me!

  25. Hi Brenda. I love what you did with the old potting bench and love the new old table one.

Hope you have a peaceful Sunday.
    Hug…Tracy :)

  26. Great potting bench Bren, it’s perfect! We will be planting our garden next weekend,so…it is going to be awhile before we will be eating fresh tomatoes!!!

  27. Yahoooooooooooo..me got inspiration from you this morning girl. Guess what I plan on doing with the box of glass jars I got at the yard sale two weeks ago? I’m going to put my Miracle Grow in there. I was just thinking yesterday, ‘what else can I put in these jars?” Seriously, I was,,lol.

I adore that table. It does remind of of the I Love Lucy. I love her.

That was an amazing find. I’ve been on a hunt for a table too for my potting corner. I am using an ugly green plastic table that I have had for centuries. Yucky!

    ((hugs))

  28. Oh how perfect! I just did some planting myself yesterday. I have the BLACKEST thumb. :)

  29. What a great potting table! It’s perfect for outdoors. I can’t believe you’re enjoying fresh tomatoes already…Yum!

    Hugs,
    Donna

  30. Hi Brenda, I am going to email you, but I wanted to jot a note or two. I love your new potting bench..the older I get, the more I appreciate vintage and retro things. Maybe thats because I am vintage and retro myself..
Stop by and say hi, I found your wonderful blog from Polly, and I wanted to come by and just offer prayers and good thoughts to you..

    hugs:))

  31. We had a table similar to your new garden table more than 50 years ago in our vacation cabin. The colors were teal, yellow and red, different pattern and it had the pull outs too. I was a little girl at the time and loved that table.

  32. Put a plastic dropcloth or table protector on top, so it’s easy to clean and the top doesn’t ruin in the elements.
    Yum, those tomatoes look great!

  33. As always..very clever use of vintage items for a useful purpose..cute, too! I love my potting bench, too..it’s a great place to just be.

  34. Brenda,
Just cute as can be! Love it!!!

p.s. those tomatoes look yummy :)

  35. Brenda, love your potting benches. So clever to have one in the kitchen….how cool is that?!

I had a potting bench years ago before we extended our patio…..I miss it.

    Barb ♥

  36. I love your new potting bench, it looks like it’s from the 40′s to me.

I’ve got a gardening giveaway going on over at my blog at the moment – I’m trying to get inspiration for my new garden (starting from absolute scratch!) and your garden is always so gorgeous, I’d love it if you could pop over and give me some ideas and advice!

You are sounding more positive today, I’m glad. I hope thing are ok.

  37. My guess is that your table is from the 40′s with its chrome legs. It is SO cute! I think I would find a cute vinyl check in red, blue, or yellow from the fabric store, and protect the top of it. I would worry about potting on it’s surface. It’s adorable, Brenda!

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  38. You potting table is just exactly what I’ve been looking for!! I did see one at an antique store this weekend but I was not in a truck, we were riding the train…
I have a tray like the one on your black bench, and once again you’ve inspired me and have shown me what else I can put in it thanks, have a great day..

  39. I’ve been wanting a potting shed or bench with an arbor over it. Not for protection, but to grow vinig stuff on of course. ha ha! You are right, the ones you buy in stores don’t really hold up very well. Nice find Brenda! p.s. love the look of plant food in Mason jars! Cute idea!
