A New Day & A Different Kitchen Island

I have been using my Singer sewing machine table for a kitchen island for some time. But then this week came the man-cave brown sectional couch. Which meant things had to be moved all about the house to make room for its gigantic presence.

The sewing machine table needed to be evicted from the kitchen (unfortunately) and moved to the dining room. Why, you ask? It was perfect there.

Because another table, formerly in the space the red sideboard filled in the garden room, wouldn’t fit anywhere else in this house. No room in the garage. Next to no attic space. It went outside overnight. I worried. I fretted. And then this idea came to me.

I hauled the table in from the deck. I walked around and stared at it. It is taller, I said to myself, and has a little more surface area…

Which got me to thinking…

I could use the space underneath for storage! Then another thought occurred to me. The table was wooden, so I could actually add things to the wood…

And so I made a trip to Hobby Lobby, my thinking cap firmly in place.

Metal items were priced half off. For seven dollars, I outfitted the wood table with metal hangers on either end.

Storage and organization floats my boat. I started feeling much better about the whole situation.

How many times have you hesitated over making a change? Then come to discover it has hidden benefits. I’m kind of liking this…

  1. You have made a lot of good points or organizing. I love the table and what you have done with it. Have a nice weekend. sandi

  2. Brenda I hear ya. Change is a tough one for me as well. WOW! This looks gorgeous and fits so well in your kitchen. Love the scroll hooks. Nice changes. :)

  3. I really, really, really love the repurposed kitchen island.

But, my tender heart is worried about the rejected sewing table – - – hope “she” has a new honored location and is HAPPY in “her” new digs.

  4. Brenda, that looks good in your kitchen. I guess something good came out of the big brown monster.

  5. Brenda…you inspired me to make my singer based table into MY kitchen island. I just love it but I totally understand about needing to move things around and shake things up. I LOVE your table island….the hooks from HL are perfect. Oh, and I have those same picnic baskets…mine reside under a bench in my entry way. Enjoy your new island :)

    Blessings!
    Gail

  7. I actually like the table better than the sewing machine base in the kitchen. Love the metal hooks you mounted on it. And who can’t use more storage? I hope you’ll give us a glimpse of the sewing machine base in it’s new home in the dining room. I have my grandmother’s old singer base, topped with glass and use it as a bedside table. It’s perfect.

  8. I like it!!! It’s perfect as an island.

  9. Love it girl…looks wonderful as an Island…you do have my address if you want to send the Singer to me ha ha!! Hope you have a GREAT weekend my friend…Hugs and smiles Gl♥ria

  10. I think the table looks great. A friend of mine used an old table for her island. She tiled the top with small tiles from Lowe’s or Home Depot. It looked beautiful and was very unique!

  11. I love it!! It’s perfect along with all you added to it.

Thanks for the reminder that on the other side of change there is always a hidden benefit. Perfect timing for me today.

    Have a lovely weekend.

  14. I love the new island. Looks way more practical!!! (But would love to see the old singer in it’s new place).

  15. Oh Brenda Sweetie…
I love your new island. It is so much spacier and look at all the storage you do have. I love the little hooks that you purchased and hung, they are perfect.

I have a hook on the end of mine that I hang one of my frying pans on. I also had DH install one of those towel bars for me, that way I can hang my towels to dry after dishes are done. I so enjoy mine.

I love your wood bowl full of rolling pins, and I too love cherries. My kitchen is full of cherry stuff.

    Such a beautiful share sweetie.

    Many hugs, Sherry

Hope your staying cool these days. I bet it’s hot there. We are having a spectacular summer. I hope it never ends… but it will. For now I’m enjoying the pool. I’m getting so dark they might just mistake me for someone else soon : )

  35. I love it! Fantastic idea!

  36. Nothing like a big new BROWN sectional to give us an excuse to make a trip to H.L… Don’t you just find the funniest things there. You do have to sort through some junk, but there is always a treasure to be found. Good Job, my friends,
    T.G.B.

  37. Just when I think you could not out do yourself….YOU DO!!!!
Love the table and the hooks at the end…I would be in BIG trouble if there was a HL here…but I still want one! Have a great weekend!

  38. It looks perfect! I’m pretty cautious about changing things around and it feels uncomfortable but I’m usually happy in the end. Have a great Sunday, Brenda!

  39. I love your blog! Love the colors and the pretty things to look at. Love the hooks on the end of the table! I’ll have to remember that one. There is just something about vintage things that makes a home cozy.

    Hugs, Patti

  40. Hi Brenda,
