The Kindle Just Wasn’t For Me…

I know this isn’t a photo of a Kindle. But it would practically be unheard of for me to post without a photo.

Here’s the story of me and the Kindle I got for my birthday last month.

Long story short, I have learned I’m just not an e-book reader.

I gave the Kindle to my husband, who purchased it for me in the first place. (He also got me a new camera, and it’s a sure-fire keeper!)

I’m just going to stick to regular old books. The ones that have paper pages. I have always loved reading books. I found that love of the written word just did not translate to an electronic screen.

I’m sure many of you love your e-books. You so generously gave me your opinions on the Nook and the Kindle, etc. I’m glad you like them and are happy.

But this girl just wants to hold her book in her hands. Run my fingers over the binding. Love it in its original form.

And after I’ve read the fictional ones, I’ll donate them to the hospital library where my husband works, so the patients will have them to read during their stay. I keep non-fiction such as gardening, craft and decorating books.

Any body else get one and then find out it wasn’t for you?

  1. This is so funny as I was thinking about doing a post on my love of real books and the library. I love the way it smells. All the old paper. I will never have one of those. Hope that books and magazines stay around.

  2. Just got one as a prize… not sure about it either. Something just isn’t right not being able to turn your page, fold the corners to mark it…. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if I can get ‘hooked’

  3. I tried to do Kindle on my PC with the free books from Amazon but I had trouble really concentrating. When I want to read a book I want to be able to hold it and turn pages, etc.

  4. Give me a real book, paperback, hardback any form with real paper pages. Love the feel, love the smell, just not into a “tech” one! Hope they never do away with real books.

  5. I’ve had my NookColor for about two months now and really like it.
I can download books from our local library and when my two weeks are up the book expires from my Nook. I can’t afford to buy every book I read. I read a lot.
It is a bit to get used to as I’ve found myself attempting to turn the page rather than using a tap or swipe.
I rather enjoy being able to download audiobooks from the library to my NookColor so that I can listen while I knit in the evening.
    Just one gal’s opinion.
    Hugs to all,
    Gerry

  6. I’m pretty much the same, except really really late at night when I can’t sleep, but don’t feel like holding a book in bed.

  7. content with old fashion ‘books’ here, too. i’m a big reader, and vastly prefer the print format over electronic. although, if i was on a trip out of the country, and desperate…i’d wish for a kindle.

hope the sun is shining brightly for you today, brenda.

  8. At least you gave it a try. I agree with you as well. My hubby has a kindle and loves it! I tried it but found it odd to be reading a “book” on a screen. I love to see how far I have read and be able to turn the pages! :) I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

  9. I have a Nook, and I like (notice, the word love was not used) it. There are books I buy and books I down load. When I am traveling I have to say it is the best. I usually travel with no less that three books, so….I do believe it is something you have to adjust to, sort of an acquired taste.

  10. Opps, one more reason I LOVE – yep, love – my NookColor
I can blog from my Nook
I can catch up on all the blogs I follow
I can check my e-mail from my Nook
I can e-mail from my Nook

Oh, yes, I’m a NookColor gal!

    Hugs,
    Gerry

  11. I don’t have one and probably won’t buy one anytime soon. I’m with you….I like the feel, smell, touch of a real book. I’ve heard you can look at magazine’s on some of them…..I just can’t get into that. I NEED my stack of magazines….LOL!! PS: Happy Belated Birthday!

  12. I haven’t had the urge to try one yet. I get almost all of my reading material from my wonderful public library…I love leafing through the books and deciding what I will take home with me to enjoy. I don’t think I could do this with an Kindle. But I always have a audio book from the library to listen to in the car.

  13. I’m totally with you on this Brenda. The printed word will never be replaced for this gal. Lx

  14. I’ve always been a middle of the road kind of gal…I love my husband’s Nook that I gave him for Christmas {he adores it}, and I also love to read my books. One will not replace the other.

    XO,
    Jane

  15. I imagined myself holding a Kindle and reading. Just didn’t register in my head. I have to own the book, hard copy preferred. I like to corner pages, and like to write in the margins and underline certain passages. Then I can go pick it up and see the sticky, page with the sugary thumb print and think; “hmm, must have been eating a sticky bun!”.

    Just works better for me.

  16. I have looked at them in the stores, but I just haven’t felt an urgent need for one. Maybe, maybe not. I thought I’d never own a cell phone, but when my hubby developed diabetes and had a bad turn one day. The cell became a necessity. Same for the kindle, probably not.

  17. I couldn’t live without my computer or my cell phone, but I don’t have the urge to have a Kindle. One of my cheap thrills is a trip to the library. I love looking through all the books and bringing the ones that appeal to me home. Perhaps someday it will be a necessity, but for now I’m a “real” book kind of girl!

  18. I don’t “get” the fuss about the Kindle. I can’t imagine laying in bed reading from it. I need to read from a book. I don’t mind reading snippets on the computer (like blogs lol), but couldn’t begin to imagine what reading a whole book from a screen would be like. I guess this is the way of the paperless future. One day children wont even know what a book is.

    Cheers,
    Lisa x

  19. I love technology Brenda, but I’ve never had the urge to get an e-reader. Must be the artist in me, but I love the feel of the paper, and the original form of books. I hope they never stop printing on paper!

  20. I have never seen one so I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think it would be for me either. Love Linda x.

  21. I could NEVER give up my books and magazines. I too want to touch the pages, love the different book and magazine covers….I have magazines that I have had for over 30years and books that I received as a child (some 50 years ago), they are all beautiful on my shelves….no, nothing can take the place of a book or magazine in my hands!!!! NEVER!!!

  22. I have a Nook, but it was a gift. I much, much prefer real books and find myself picking up a book even though I have a couple of books waiting on the Nook. I totally understand.

  23. I think I could enjoy a Kindle on long plane trips since I could take a LIBRARY with me in a very minimal space and with very minimal weight.

BUT – - – for all the REST of my days, I agree with you. I want to hold the real book and feel the real paper in my hands!

  24. I just know a Kindle would not be right for me, I just like the feel of a book in my hands. I am just an old fashion girl.

  25. Oooops – - – I ALSO meant to say how much I like your canning jars filled up with all kinds of pretty goodies.

  26. Hi Brenda
I am just the same. I feel that I spend enough time looking at a computer screen as it is. So when I have a bit of spare time, I like to read from a paper book.
    Isabelle x

  27. I don’t have one, but I agree with you. I love an old fashion book. Touching it, holding, the smell of them, and not to mention putting a pretty little bookmark in them to save your page.

  28. I asked my granddaughter sitting here eating pizza as I type and she said she likes her kindle. However, her mother just said she prefers a real book for the same reason you do. “D
    Enjoy your evening.

  29. I got a Kendal two years ago and it has been in the box ever since. I too love a book. Such a waste of money for me, I should sell it.

  30. While I LOVE reading the many wonderful blogs online, I am not an electronic book reader. I like the feel of the books in my hands and the way the words look on the printed page.
    Tammy

  31. although I love blogging and the computer I just can’t wrap my mind around e books. I am a vintage gal at heart and need to feel the pages between my fingers. LOVE books ~ ;-)

  32. Well, I love my kindle, so I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you. I still buy “real” books too. My only thought is, it DOES take a few times reading on one to get used to it. I don’t even notice anymore. Really!

  33. It’s very interesting to read the Kindle comments. I have a book, Phantom Seven, that is soon to be released. Often, people ask me about the Kindle and ask if my book will be available as an e-book. Several members of my writer’s group have the Kindle or another similar device, and most of them love it. Several elder individuals have expressed that it’s easier on their eyes than a book.

  34. last year i read 172 books, i can say kindle really boosts my numbers :) i like instant gratification, i don’t have to drive to a book store, or wait at the library, or for the postman with my amazon package, i can have it instantly. i was traveling and got a book on the freeway going 80 mph, in the middle of nowhere, i finished the book before we pulled over for gas, I LOVE KINDLE!

i still read real books, but i prefer kindle, or my ipad app, you can read in the dark and not disturb anyone. if i wake up and can’t sleep i grab the ipad and my husband never knows, i get loads more reading done this way. i LOVE kindle because you can search a word or phrase, with a built in dictionary and bookmarking, its just so much easier then reading with pen and paper, post it notes etc if you want to reflect back or do research. i also like making the font bigger…

i usually only buy kindle books that are over 400 pages, i don’t like lugging around heavier books. if you travel, kindle is a godsend, i used to pack 2 dozen books per trip, not fun dragging them around, now my kindle has 140 books and weighs less than a pound. i love my kindle so much that i find i do get upset when reading a book and i find myself clicking pages and they don’t turn…

maybe you will grow into liking your kindle, mine was a gift too, it took me about 2-3 books for me to go head over heals, now i am just immersed in the story, not the vehicle, except i always prefer the kindle with the built in dictionary :)

  35. I am not a huge book reader but I read a ton of magazines. I could probably read them online but I still buy and subscribe to them because I love the feel of a magazine. I always will.

  36. I’m with you, Brenda. I don’t want no Kindle! :) I’d rather hold a book in my hands and turn the pages!
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  37. I like my Kindle – I’ve had it about a year now. I must admit that I still prefer a “real book”. One thing I do like is having the Kindle when I travel — much easier to deal with on planes – in airports. I LOVE being able to get a book instantly but really miss the paper and feel of a book. So, I do both! Life is good!

  38. I’ve not tried it but my hubby LOVES his Kindle.

New question for your TIPS MONDAY..
How do you center a photo beneath your header? Mine hangs off to the left.
    thanks, Brenda.

  39. I’ve thought about getting a Kindle, but I’m not so sure it’s for me. I just feel like I’d miss having an actual book.

  40. I love my Nook! I love being able to read in bed without having to turn pages. That is when I read. At night, before I fall asleep. I still buy decorating and gardening books, but for novels….the Nook is great for me.

  41. I’ve been wondering if it’s worth the money. Thanks for the input. Mimi

  42. Well I have to weigh in here too. I don’t have a kindle or nook but I ADORE my iPad. Now, don’t get me wrong – I love books and magazines – but I love my iPad too. It feels like a real book to me. I know – that sounds crazy – but I just read my first entire book on it and it felt completely natural after the first couple of pages. And I have to say it’s fantastic for traveling. I’m carrying about 15 books on it right now. (Plus you can have all those fun apps too!)

Now, you mentioned a camera. What kind did you get? That’s exciting!

  43. I can only go so far when it comes to the digital world. As it is, with everything work related being done by email and computer now, I spend enough time in front of a screen. Don’t our eyes need a break from the glare? I don’t think curling up at nite in bed with a little electronic device would be quite the same as a good page turning book and a lovely handmade bookmark to hold my place til the next reading time. :) Have a terrific Tuesday. Tammy

  44. Brenda,
I am sorry that the kindle didn’t work for you. I love mine and my husband loves his too. I still buy books but mostly cookbooks and craft books and photography books, etc.. I also have severe arthritis which makes holding books for a long time quite uncomfortable. I just got an iPad and am quite enthralled with the color for reading.

    Very interesting comments.

    Carol

  45. I’m with you. There is nothing like the feeling of paper, binding, and the words, oh, the words! Call me old school, but I just don’t want an electronic book. I want good old fashioned paper.

  46. I’ve never had anything of the kind, but when my hubby offered to purchase something like Kindle, I refused at once. Like you Brenda, I love to hear the sound of rustling paper, I like to feel the texure of the fabric cover… I don’t believe old books will be ever supplanted by electronic ones.

  47. My family wanted to purchase me a Kindle, I read at least an hour every evening. But I just keep telling them no. I want to feel the book, smell the book, feel an actual connection to the book. I still have many of my childhood books, how can those memories ever be given up for a computer screen. Laying outside in the hammock reading til the lightening bugs start flying around…just not the same with some electronic gagdet.

  48. As much time as I spend on my Mac it would seem that I would love a Kindle, but I don’t. I have always loved libraries and vintage book shops and don’t feel the need to make the switch.

    Lots of love,
    Susan and Bentley
    xxoo

  49. I have a Kindle and love it. I have glaucoma and the contrast is so much better and easier for me to read. The fact that I can change the font size is a big plus too. Then a few weeks ago I had rotator cuff surgery and I am one handed for a while here so it’s great to be able to read and turn the page with my one good hand. It has beeen a life saver for me at this point in my life.

  50. That’s interesting you feel that way. I have toyed with the idea of getting one of the electronic reader for..well since they came out with them..but I LOVE books..I Love the feel of holding them, in my hands, and the feel of the paper in my fingers (plus I make copious notes in the margins of my books…a lot of people don’t like that but it is like having a conversation with the book, or the writer..!!!)
On the other hand I Love computers (I am shopping for a lap top) And when I read a book, I research any questions I have, or email the writer themselves, to ask, using the computer,so it is an interactive process for me to use to REAL book.

  51. I don’t have a Kindle so I can’t say for sure but I never thought I’d want to replace a good page turning book with technology. However, as my eyesight dims, it may just be the thing to have.

  52. I agree with you Brenda!;) Have a wonderful day!! Hugs,Rachel

  53. The kindle isn’t for me either. Give me the old fashioned book to hold in my hand, dog-ear a page, set in the beach chair or next to the tub. Kindle just ain’t the same.

  54. My husband uses our NOOK more than I do! But it really is great for traveling! You know you’ll have something to read…a choice of books! And I still like being able to download some things free…and from the library! I don’t buy a lot of books full price. I love hardback books most of the time (I went to the library this morning) but the NOOK is great, too! ♥

  55. I got the Kindle app for my Blackberry and I’m not liking it. I have read two books on it and the only real benefit I see is that I always have access to the books – like when I’m waiting for my oil to be changed. But I’m with you – I miss the page flipping and somehow it doesn’t seem like I’m really reading a book when I’m reading it on my phone.

  56. Someone wanted to gift me with a Kindle…but I’m with you, Brenda…nothing beats the real thing. I love books, have always loved books (when I was little my mother would always catch me way-past bed-time, under the covers reading with a flashlight! and I always got in trouble at school because I would take my new reader home with me and read all the stories the first night!) Give me pages to turn!!! Real pages!

  57. Welcome back to the printed word!
    xo,
    Sena

  58. I’m with you. I love books, and I’m sure I always will!

  59. I haven’t had a Kindle or Nook and do not want one! Like you I want to hold the book and turn the pages and smell the newness and see the binding on my bookshelf! No electronics for me!

  60. I’m with you Brenda. When I read, I want to hold my actual book, curl up in a comfy chair, grab my cup of coffee and read the afternoon away!

  61. I was just talking to my husband about buying one. I think that I would probably feel the same way. I keep my favorite books but the others I give to charity. Sometimes I give my favorites and buy myself another one to keep. One day I want to give them to my grandchildren.

  62. I loved my husband’s comment on Kindle: “I don’t like reading that much, but I would hate a Kindle. Wth a book you can at least see and feel your progress.”
