Blogger Tips Monday 7/25/11

Why I Chose Pinterest Over Facebook

I tried, but just couldn't get my mind wrapped around Facebook or Twitter. TMI (Too Much Information, and too little time to digest it). But then came Pinterest this past year. And I'm very visual, so I knew it was the social network for me.

You may be asking yourself why I'm including this in blogging tips. I'm going to tell you.

According to the company: "Pinterest is a place to catalog the things you love."

If you haven't heard of it yet, Pinterest is a newish, free site/service/social network that lets you save (or "pin") images that you find online, and save them all in one place under various categories.

But the reason it helps you as a blogger, is that it's potentially a great social tool to connect you with people, and thus drive traffic to your blog.

I personally have 16 boards at this time (categories of photos) and 686 pins. It's fast. You can simply click on a photo you see that stirs your interest, use your "Pin It" button you've placed on your browser somewhere handy, and add it to your personal boards. Then place it in the category you deem most suitable. And then all your Followers on Pinterest can see what floats your boat.

All pinned images include links back to their original source on the web. Thus, if you found it on a blog, for instance, then it will automatically list the blog you found it on. Gaining that blog more exposure and possibly new friends that like the same kind of photos you do.

For instance, I have categories for Studios, Beverage Stations, Fine Dining, Gardening, Display For The Home, etc.

People can also "repin" anything that they like that someone else has already previously pinned. This is the Pinterest version of a "retweet." It always shows who the original "pinner" was, thus where it originated.

You can create "Boards" for anything you desire. Add as many photos as you like. Change it up and move photos from board to board. Just like a big bulletin board that stretches out into infinity.

How does it help your blog?

You're connecting with people on a personal level. You're saying to others: "Look at this photo. This is my style." Blog readers get to know you better. I've even found many new-to-me blogs this way. Others quickly get to know your interests, so they may just hop on over to your blog and become a Follower there as well. Thus you're gaining more potential traffic to your blog.

You're showing what you're about. You can add social media icons. You can get Pin It badges for your blog. If you want to find my Boards: Go Here.

Some niches lend themselves better to Pinterest than others. Interior design is huge on Pinterest. But anyone who uses photos on their blog will find Pinterest a potential gold mine. A virtual filing system. You will never again have to hunt down that photo you know you saw somewhere, but can't recall where. Because you've got it pinned from the get-go and can go straight to it.

I think it's still in Invitation Only mode. But if you haven't received an invite, let me know. I will send you one.

I've seen this somewhere before, but did not understand what it was. You've done a great job explaining it. Thank you. I'm kind of techno-challenged, but I'd like to give it a try, please.

Brenda, I am so addicted to Pinterest, I have 50 boards and over 1100 pins! I tried following your boards but it is a different site I am taken to and can't see your boards. I have, however, seen some of your lovely dishes while searching and recognized them and sure enough. it mentioned your blog. I found something from my blog by accident!! I have visited some bloggers but they have nothing going on, yet they have lots of followers! Time to start repinning! xo

I DID open an account - but I'm unclear about it. Do you have to have links or "friends" selected somehow to see them or to have others see you?

Brenda, I'd be interested in trying it out. Could you send an invitation? Thanks.

We are going to be visiting my daughter this week and I will take my laptop so she can help me figure it out. I LOVE Facebook......a lovely way to keep up with friends and family wiithout being too intrusive. All my children and siblings are on FB.

I resisted both Facebook and Pinterest for a long time. I finally decided I needed to get with it and figure things out! Facebook was NOT fun but Pinterest has been a blast. I can't tell you how much fun it is to open my page and see all my favorite pictures...and it's really easy. Unlike Facebook, it was quick and worked immediately. You explained it beautifully too. At first I was so clueless about what it really was. Great post.

I've been on Pinterest for a few months and oh how I love it. I used to save all these photos of things I liked on my computer. Now I just save it all on Pinterest and I love being able to see what my followers have pinned because usually what they like, I like too. Love it way more than facebook or twitter.

Brenda,
I love pintrest also, and am on it but as of yet, DON'T know how to do it!! A how to post on how to set up your boards, do your button, move things around, etc would be wonderful for us not so "gifted" folks! I know I'd love a step by step how to!

I second the reader's request to have a blog about how to do it. After reading their comments I am wondering if I'll be able to figure it out on my own. However, it looks fun!

Looks like you can have something called a "pin" without attaching it to a board. Don't know how you'd find it again though.

Anyway, thanks for the offer and I'd love it if you'd send me an invite. My email is momstheword2008@hotmail.com

Thanks!

I wish I could feel the love for Pinterest since there is so much eye candy to be found there. I don't know what the problem is, but it takes forever for it to load on my computer.

Being that Pinterest is so new, if we don't blog is it still of use to us? Will they allow us on w/out being a blogger?
It all seems sort of confusing right now, although I read so many posts of people that love it. Thanks for your wonderful explanations!

I am crazy about Pinterest! I have developed a pinning addiction. I think it's perfect because I used to spend hours cutting and categorizing ideas found in magazines. As an interior designer I have been creating story boards since my design school days. Pinterest is shear genius because you not only find design ideas but ones for crafting, holidays and more. Great tool!

Thank you Brenda for the information about this sight, would you please give me an invite to the sight. I always look for your blog to read first. I would love to have you for a neighbor because we have so much in common....I live in Ohio....
I have a blog called Amelia Rose Cottage but have not kept up with it because I never had many followers. My husband Charlie passed away five months a go and I am now just trying to adjust to my new life. I see you are going through some hard times right now. I will put you on my prayer list and things will get better. Hugs
