Week 1: Frugal Storage For Crafts
{Living Big in 1010 (square feet}
Claudia and I are starting our series on Defending The Small House today. I have just finished my craft room/office space.
So I'll be showing a lot of pics to let you see where I put everything since I moved. I purchased this shelf (above) from Home Depot last week. My daughter put it together for me. Cost: $68.
Remember the little glass jars I decorated for beads last winter?
Since I didn't get to bring my stamp shelves, I have stamps all over the room in various compartments.
I'm sure you remember the desk repurposed last week from the hallway door.
Bet you wondered where on earth this little table and chairs were. Now a space to make crafts and sew.
A couple of years ago these jars had food in them. Cleaned them well. Decorated with scrap paper, added some bits of fringe, and decoupaged the surface to adhere. Now it is craft storage. Cost: $0.
These red baskets have tops that go on them. But I always had to take off the top to see what was inside. So I just turned them on their sides. Now I can see the contents quite easily.
The curtains you see in this room I sewed long ago for other windows at another house. But I already had them and the tension rods, so they're being used here. Tip: Make it work. Cost: $0.
Picked this coke crate up at an antique mall last week. Was a little steep for my blood. But it was the color I wanted, and it had the horizontal shelf I needed. Cost: $20.
I'm sure this red shelf was originally for spices. I've also used it for sewing thread. Now I'm using it for stamps. Tip: Look at things in new ways, for new uses, before you go purchase something new.
Remember the wool felt? Now it's being displayed in an old vintage suitcase I've had for years.
The blue and white plaid has been on there just as long. It is shelf liner I applied to the back. Wish I had more of it.
Charlie Ross likes to perch up here on a quilt while I'm working.
Abi prefers it underneath the desk.
Lots of pics to take in all at once. But I wanted to show the completed room. I'm fortunate to have a designated space for my office and crafts.
Total cost for this room: $88.
Head over to Claudia's home in New York, where two people and two large dogs share a small house.
Help us decide what we should feature next week in this series of storage in small houses. And ways we learn to live with what we have.
It's a tough economy, folks. We're all hurting.
But by sharing ideas, we can come up with ways to stretch that dollar and make more of that space.
That's all from Living Big in 1010 (square feet, that is) in Tulsa!

I think you have a wonderful space full of lovely treasures,,lots of good thigs will come from this space, I live in a 550 square foot apartment, this looks big to me, lol
You've made it work just beautifully. You are so gosh darn organized, it's inspirational. Having that space designated for your creating is so fabulous. I think great things are going to come out of there :)
Very nicely put together. A place for everything, and everything in its place. I have a ton of bias tape and I can't find it! I know I put it somewhere!! lol
I need to borrow your organization skills. It all looks so put together. I am loving this series.
Great tips!
How nice to be so organized and your space looks great!
Brenda your office and craft space is beautiful and so creatively decorated. I'm sure it is inspiring to work there. Like Laurie, your space looks really big to me as my craft materials are in one small cupboard and a Rubbermaid bin. I do have some glass jars with craft items and they will be on a shelf as soon as I get the shelf up.
The main way I've coped with craft paraphernalia in my tiny space is to simply have less. When I was decluttering I donated and gave away tons of craft stuff. Now I basically have only what I use on a daily/weekly basis. This has saved me money, space, and time. I know space needed for crafts is relevant to the crafts. My pens, paper, and paints take a lot less room than if I were sewing, or knitting. Another good thing that has come out of my craft decluttering is that I had to find crafts that fit my space, which led me back to my love of illustration and watercolors where less supplies are needed.
Another tip: As a digital scrapbook products designer (now retired) I learned early on that digital scrapping saves a ton of money (products can be used over and over again as opposed to real paper which is gone when it's used once), space, mess, and time.
So many cute ideas in this post- I especially like your fabric storage- the baskets and rolled in a suitcase- and you can see it all.
Wow, great ideas! I live in a small house too, so some good tips for the likes of me!
I love the fabric covered boxes that you have fabric in...neat idea!
Lovely pictures of a lovely home!

Great ideas here and I am pretty sure I now know what curtains to put in my spare bedroom...the last room with mini blinds but can't afford to replace 4 windows just yet. Cute curtains only on the bottom half may be just what I need there. Gonna try it, at least.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Brenda,
Everything looks beautiful! Thank you for mentioning the fact that this is a tough economy and for sharing ideas to save money! Kudos!
Ideas for next week? Perhaps you could make this a linky party where people can share their living-in-a-small-house ideas? I went from a McMansion in the city to a 375 sq. foot cottage in the mountains, so I've learned quite a bit along the way! :)
Wishing you a lovely week,
Zuzu
Brenda, thanks for this series. It can be such a challenge to get all the function you need out of a small house but it can be a fun adventure as well. I love your office/craft studio. You've given me lots of ideas...but first comes the purge. Why is my craft stuff the hardest to let go of? Thanks for stopping by to take a look at the living room. Have a great day. Now off to Claudias! Patty
It looks WONDERFUL! That you've done so much in so little time astounds me. Perhaps a post on "having people over in a small space" would show up in the series at some point?
Happy day to you!
~april
Looks wonderful, you have such a design eye. When I try to put it all together it looks like junky clutter. Yours looks like designer boutique. Wish you made housecalls? Hugs
Wow your craft room is so organized already. Now do share where do you keep all the ugly stuff? I have so much of that and it is always creeping out of the cupboards.
Hmm what would I like to see in this series. Kitchen storage? My kitchen is really small so I don't have a lot of room to stash things. Same goes for my bathroom.
You've certainly made good use of the space and the pieces you had, Brenda! Nicely done! I'm still organizing my craft/sewing room and even though we downsized, I'm fortunate to have it as well. A few more of those plastic drawer organizers and I should be set.
What a great blog you have!!! I found you from A Rosy Note blog....cant wait to read more posts.....new follower:)
SO nice to meet you!
A Funky Little Fashion Blog
LOL- I went over to visit Claudia and almost forgot to come back to say Thank You! You did a wonderful job on your craft room (I had NO doubts). I think you are doing a wonderful job working with what you have now. I haven't heard one regret so far! xo Diana
Hi Brenda! I have been following you for quite a while now and this is the first time to post a comment. Just wanted to say how happy I am for you and how wonderful your little blue house is. I cheer you on every day!
(((hugs)))
Don't you just love when something as simple as changing the way a basket is hung provides such neat storage? The room looks great, and looks very Brenda. Nice, nice work, my friend.

Brenda, the downturn in the economy might have some good things coming out of it in the end. We can all learn to live on a little less, make do, use it up, that's the mantra from the Dirty 30's. And since we have parents from that era, it just seems natural to gravitate towards that mind set. I have always lived in small spaces...and have also found out that things expand to fill the space provided. They do multiply, LOL.
A great series, see, a new career for you.
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams
Beautiful and creative! Making every inch count! I sometimes wish I had a smaller house just for me to live in.
I was excited to see you get your craft room/office done...I know how much you love this space! It really looks wonderful, I love how you repurpose so many things, from shelves to jars!! Great job, Brenda...love this series, too!
XO,
Jane
Hi Brenda! Love what you have done with your craft room. I came over from Claudia's and am glad I did! You both have given us all some great ideas! 1400 sq ft here. Ann
I am ridiculously envious. I have lots of space, but my space doesn't look like your space! You really need to hire yourself out as a decorator!
You are very lucky to have a room for your office/craft/sewing space.
My desk/paper crafting is in my bedroom. Mom got part of the kitchen for her sewing. I have also turned baskets on their sides and have hung some on the wall for little shelves. I also have some of my stamps in shadow boxes with compartments and hung those on the wall. And clear stamps can be put in notebooks and save a ton of space. I even unmounted some of my wood stamps and put those in notebooks. Your room looks great!
As someone who has over 800 pieces of Fiestaware in a 1250 sf space, I'm always looking for good, sturdy dish storage. Also, when you don't have a linen closet - storing towels, apart from the usual basket on the floor.
Love what you're doing!
I'm working on my space but I don't think it will ever look as cool as yours. I do have one question-- where did you find those red baskets that you have turned on their sides. I need something like that in my room for projects and my laundry room shelves.
It took us years (decades actually) before we were able to have our rooms to make our own.
His is part guest room, office, and toy room for the grandkids. He is always on the lookout for unique pieces to make his room special and he purchases toys to share with the grands.
My room is for crafting, sewing, computing, and storage space for
holidays and my dishware for tea parties. These rooms have to be multipurpose.
Your creative space looks good and it's such an inspiration to make do
and repurpose. I love your room. Thanks
Very nice, and so inspirational. I live in a small space also, and I have the hardest time organizing my craft room. It seems to always be the catch all for things I don't know what to do with. You have done a beautiful job. I love your blog. Thanks for sharing, Karie
You've got that room as cute as can be! I've never had the money or the desire to just go out and purchase everything I needed for a space...but I don't think it would be as satisfying as nesting with what you have or can go junking for.
I never stop marveling over the way God prepared you ahead of time for living in a small space...all those posts you did about tiny houses...He's so good!
Love this series. Your craft room looks great! Love your ideas for storage also.
i'm just LOVIN that you are posting so often with your wonderful pics. You have killer organizational and display skills...SKILLZ girl SKILLZ!! I'm inspired to go organize 'something' and make it pretty!

Thanks so much for sharing all of your ideas. I love that you were able to repurpose so many of your things in new ways.
Laura
Fabulous! I dream of having a craft room. You are so organized. Everything looks great.
You have a knack of making everything functional AND oh so cozy!!
I love the reds you seem to gravitate towards!!
Looks like the little house was just waiting for you to make it smile! :)
I am going to enjoy this small house series!
As Marianne said, where do you put the ugly stuff? All of your stuff is adorable. Your place looks like it's ready to appear in a magazine! Come, come, 'fess up!
How about some ideas for small bathrooms where, if you put stuff in baskets on the floor, you won't be able to fit yourself in.
Every little inch counts in a small house, doesn't it? And believe me I know, because you've got me beat at 1010 square feet! You've managed to pack alot of stuff in your craft room, but it in no way looks cluttered, and in fact looks spacious. Keep the storage ideas coming!
I am so loving what you are doing with this house, and looking forward to all the posts in the series. The Little Blue House looks like a happy place, and I am so glad you and your doggies have it.
I own a tiny cottage,on a lake, in another state. It makes your house look large! What helps me is a "less is more" attitude. I have some cute things, some antiques, and just what is necessary. It is uncluttered and serene. Little houses are so cozy and can have so much charm. When I return to our larger, but not huge. house, I miss the simplicity of tiny house living.

Hi Brenda,
Your office/craft space look so very efficient! With just a glance you can see where everything is... Saves you time, when your in a hurry.
I'm currently working on setting up my sewing studio. I think I can use some of your ideas for storage and display!!
Thank you, Have a great week!
All the Best,
Christine
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this series. I live in 1350 and am forever trying to find places to store things!
Brenda,
Small spaces rock! They compell you to be organized and efficient, which I love being, and to simplify, which is also wonderful!
The new Cozy Little House is terrific!
You have certainly made the most of this space Brenda, it looks like home already! You must have worked like crazy to get it all done so quickly. Can I ask? How big is this room?
You are one well supplied lady! I love that crate used as a shelf. You can do so many things with those.
I love all the ideas but especially love the wooden box with "Textiles"...And I love the look of the red cabinet and shelves... Makes me want to take a rickety old shelf that painted white and paint it, distress it and prim it up with some barn red paint. Love what you are doing with you new little blue house... Especially things on the frugal side! Always, Faye
I think your little red shelf is quite striking with the graphics of you stamp collection.
Was it the bookshelf that you got at the Home Depot for 88 bucks? If so I want one too! I have not seen bookcases there before.
Thanks Brenda, for dropping by the last few days to visit! I know you are so busy :) I visit too but with 45 comment before me I just thought I would get lost lol.
So glad to see that you are settling in okay.
xoxo Bunny Jean
Fabulous Brenda....I love to see what people do with their Bits.
I live in 1400 sq ft and did so with all 4 of us at home. It was no sacrifice at all. We live in the first house we ever bought 22 years ago. We NEVER considered moving up to a bigger home.
Hi Brenda! I love it! You've done a wonderful job of putting your little craft/work room in order! Love all of your storage ideas! I love this feature and now I'm going to pop over to see your accomplice! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Amazing, cute, functional and also it has inspired me...
thank you
I love all of your tips. We live in a pretty small house for 8 people. We just make it work :)
Thanks so much for the well wishes for Jordan. He came home from the hospital today!
Blessings,
Marcia
Love your ideas and this one is fabulous Brenda!
Our home is 1600 sq. feet and now my daughter and her baby are living with us as well so I really need some good storage ideas!
Our two small baths are what really stumps me, would love to see more on that!
Cindy
I like your ideas Brenda. I am always looking for "use what you have" ideas. You have some great ones! It's been following your journey. I love the red too.
I love how you have created charming little storage areas -- everything looks so cozy and cute instead of just plastic bins and boxes. I'm still working on trying to have effective storage in my craft room / office without having it be ugly! I think, though, that I might need to pare down!
Love this series!
~Angela~
Brenda,
OMG!! I just love your craft room and everything you have done in it as far as decorating it and all the useful ideas for storage!!
Fantastic!
We are a "throw out and buy a new one" society and I think repurposing things is far more interesting and exciting!
I say PLEASE do it as a weekly thing!
Thanks so much for your visit and well wishes!! It is great to hit that 5 year mark and still be cancer free!!
I am decorating for Christmas like a nut and soon will be posting all the pics on my Christmas blog so please stay tuned!!
Hugs,
Deb
You definately have a talent for arranging things. I will look at these pictures alot. I would like to see you do the same with a kitchen. I have a small kitchen and alot of stuff. What to get rid of is usually the problem. Thanks alot Brenda.
Brenda, small spaces are wonderful! It gives us a chance to be creative in another way: making the best of those small spaces and you do it great!
Want to come over to my house and help me with my studio? ;-) Work counter space here is limited and I've been trying to figure out how to create more. *sigh* It's like putting a puzzle together! LOL!
Your spaces are looking wonderful!! Snug and cozy and VERY workable!
Hugs, Diane
It looks like you have used every square inch of space, and done it so well, that it doesn't look crowded. All of your things really look so cozy. Is it all fitting in your new house? I'll bet you will have some clever storage ideas for us. You have inspired me to store things in site in some pretty storage containers. I just need to start taking photos.
These are some great ideas, Brenda. I can't believe how quickly you've gotten everything arranged. Wow, you're a woman on the go. It makes me tired just looking at it :)
Great idea for a series, since so many of us live in small spaces. I'm currently sharing my craft space with the laundry, so I need all the idea I can get. I'll have to put some of these ideas to work.
You have utilized this room so well! Even though it house a lot of things, it is so well organized. Organization seems to be the real key. You are certainly teaching us to look at things differently. Great series!
Brenda,
Your cozy house is looking so wonderful. I love all of your ideas and plan on using some to make my little house (500 sq. ft.) a more cozy home. I love my small space and honestly don't know what I would do with more space. It really makes you take note of what is needed and get rid of the rest. I would love to see what you can do with coats etc. when you don't have a coat closet. I have a good size walk in closet but it is the only storage I have. No garage. I also would like some storage ideas for the bathroom. Thanks for starting this new series.
Hope you are feeling better each day.
I can sooo relate to this post since I live in a little old Victorian cottage. I love every square INCH of it, but not too crazy about the lack of storage, so I can totally relate and appreciate your storage ideas!! Great post Brenda! I love seeing Charlie Ross on the back of the chair ~ Bentley does the very same thing!!
Lots of love,
Susan and Bentley
That is GREAT!!!
I learned to sew on a little sewing machine like the one on the red shelf above your table and two chairs! My mom still has it and I still think it is the BEST sewing little machine ever made! :)
Brenda! Well done. I also have a small house, at 1399 square feet. We are trying to downsize our goods, its a battle but we bbkeep plugging along day to day..one day I wil be proud to show off my small home!
Barb
Wow, you managed to get a lot of stuff in your small space without sacrificing beauty. I see so many people who just pile up stuff all over their craft room in plastic bins. It's practical, and I understand the need to do that when you are short on space. Yet it would drive me nuts living like that since I like these hidden.
I'd much rather have a pretty room like yours for less money. You did a great job in working with what you already had. Really like what you did with the stamps and the baskets of fabric.
My house is small too and thanks for the tips. Love your choice to display the fabrics and stamps, etc. They're very decorative and some(like me) might tend to hide them away, but displayed, they add so much color and texture to your home.Very pretty.
Loved this post, I need to "organize" my small space room also. it's 11 x 11. It's the craft/office room. It's on the project list, need to push to the top. I love your small house. Our's is small also. It's refreshing to see "smaller" home blogger. Before I started my blog I felt "out sized" by the LARGE homes out there. Now I know, that small spaces are great and probably more the norm. Thanks for your inspirations.
