A Thrifty Mantel Holiday Decor Tip

Here's what I've done with my mantel to reflect the holiday season. I bought three packs of red and white candy canes at Target. I think they came 24 to a box. And there was a sale: Three boxes for $5.

I might make a garland to hang from the mantel if I find the time.  (Oh lord, where does the time go!) If I don't, this shall be my decorating of the mantel. For all of $5.

I am not buying one more thing to decorate for the holidays.

I have my two trees up, earlier than I wanted to. Because to put my car in the little blue garage, I had to take out the boxes of Christmas decorations and place them on the back porch.

It rained, and got the large slim tree wet, even though it was inside one of those plastic zippered tree bags. So I felt it best to get it inside before I shorted out the lights!

The little white pitcher above is an estate sale find. It was missing it's top (if ever it had one), and I paid $4 for it. I loved the lines and detail.

My oldest daughter and I are planning to open an online shop together at the first of the year if we can get our inventory together. (Guess I'd better get started!)

And possibly hold seasonal sales here at the little blue house. We're in the planning stages. She has to fit all this in while still being a mother, wife and real estate agent!

She had a booth at an antique market in South Tulsa. She has this piece she bought and refurbished. She put many, many hours into this baby. I guess you'd call it a sideboard?

Anyway, she needs to move it from her booth. And is wanting to sell it. If anyone in this area is interested, you can email me. She bought the piece for several hundred dollars. She put weeks of work into it. She wants $500.

It is a beauty. If I had anywhere to put it, I'd be talking to her! I'm sorry I don't have a better photo. This was when she'd just finished it and it was still in her garage. (And she took it with her camera.) It is now at the market.

This is another piece she wants to sell. She wants $125. Here is the information she found on the bottom of the chair: Rosewood Medallion, Victorian, Montgomery, Alabama. And then some numbers scrawled with a pencil.

Remember tomorrow Claudia and I have the next post in our series, Defending The Small House. And we have a new logo, which I think reflects us both quite well.

Tomorrow we're focusing on: Cozy Lighting In A Small House. Stay tuned...

Your mantle is lovely and so very you. And I can't wait to see your trees.
I plan to go into our basement today and dig around for some Christmas decor. Not sure what theme I am going to go with this year.
Oh what a fun adventure that you two will embark on! I know I would love to travel up a few miles to attend seasonal sales at the Little Blue House!
Love that sideboard also..if I had a spot I would drive right up and snap it up!!
Have a great day..stay warm and I will be back tomorrow for The Small House posts!
You two are really making me realize that I can have it all and make it work in our small house!

Brenda,
Your mantle looks very festive; with the red watering can and table (I think it's a table in front of the fireplace), the whole effect is terrific! One day I'm going to live in a house with a fireplace!
I'm going to rummage around my basement today to dig out some Christmas items!

You sure are having the time of your life, finding all these new treasures and places to explore. Sounds like OK is the deal capital. Love the candy cane idea. I just noticed I actually have those three bottles in that pictures. Carry on, I can't wait to see what you find next.

Perfect. That's all I can say about your mantel! Why would you want to do one more thing to decorate for Christmas. (Have we seen your trees? I don't think so...)

You better get a list of hotels for people to stay at because I think you'll have people coming from all over to your little sale! It's a fabulous idea. I am so happy for you. This move has been so wonderful!

Brenda, that shot of your living room could be in pottery barn - so charming, hard to believe you just moved in! Love the candy cane touches.

Oh, my the purple princess chair... how beautiful...

Great idea for a business venture, I am sure you will be very successful! You should do some painting of furniture like you did for the little red table!

I love your little candycanes in the white pitchers like that. If you want to forgo the garland, you can always take clippings from your bushes in your own yard and put some of them in your pitchers along with your candycanes. That would liven up your mantel for the holidays without any money and hardly any effort!

AuntLou said...

OK, I knew we have some of the same tastes, but this is ridiculous! I love white pitchers (nearly all pitcher, actually) and have several. I also grab candy canes and stick them in something to add to the festive look. Sometimes I get all colors and put them in a thick glass vase - thingy. :) Your red and white looks much more sophisticated - but still homey - than my "hasty putting."

$5.00 well spent. I am trying to not spend any money on Christmas decor this year too. I have so much stuff already, it seems silly to buy anything else. I just have to be creative with what I already own.

GLENDA CHILDERS said...

I love the simplicity of the candy canes in your beautiful white pieces. And I don't like candy canes . . . so I wouldn't be tempted to eat my decorations. :-)

Fondly,
Glenda

Love the mantel. The all white with the candy canes is just perfect. I am trying to only use what I have this year for decorating. Trying to spend less and doing OK so far! It's about the joy, family and faith to me not the gifts and spending lots of money. hugs, Linda

Hi Brenda,
So good to be back visiting you in your little blue house! You've made so much progress...it looks as if you've lived there for years...very comfy and homey. I like simple Christmas decorations and think your mantle is perfect just the way it is. The plain white pottery with the candy canes is all that is needed there...I love it! I think it's fun to use what I already have for Christmas decorating and just give it a festive look by adding berries, greens, or country ribbons. I'm really excited to follow you and Claudia with your little house project. Lately I have been fantasizing about downsizing to a little bungalow and can't wait to read all the great ideas you two come up with.
Missed you and am so happy that you are settling in to your new home so well.
Hugs,
Cheryl

Cute...like the new logo. I DOES suit you both.

That mantel is my kind of decorating...INEXPENSIVE!
Gone are the days when you could buy 3 boxes of candy canes for $1.50 OR EVEN $3...!!!
Your mantel looks pretty!

Thrifty is secondary to simply adorable. Even if thrift wasn't a factor, the mantle looks superb. I think I'm really tired of the gaudy, overdone, over styled, trying too hard looking Christmas decor that we've seen over the last several years. I'm sure a magazine would be interested in a photo of your simple but elegant idea.

I'd love to buy your trunk; let me know when you'll be selling it ;) Its beautiful, where did you find it?

Ok, nix that last comment. I guess I should have read further. $88??? You lucky dog!

I LOVE the idea of the candy canes in the white ironstone. I may have to steal that idea for my mantle. Very pretty post.
