Flowers For A Gray Afternoon

Sometimes all it takes to perk up an otherwise gray winter day is treating yourself to a bouquet of flowers.

Today was errand day. When I write down all my errands and go to the grocery store and such.

At the grocery store, I told myself I could have a treat. A magazine or some flowers. The flowers won out, as you can see.

Every time I show these dishes, I am asked what they are called. I got them at Marshalls. Then added to my small collection from Replacements.com.

On the bottom of each piece, it just says 222 Fifth New Country. They always bring a smile to my face.

And there’s just something about them, with the tiny flowers tucked sweetly inside, that warms a soul.

Tomorrow the series Thrifty Living 2012 begins. All five participants will be introducing themselves to you.

I hope you enjoy this. I believe we are all having to cut back and tighten the belt and get by on less.

If you have ideas you’d like to see featured for living a more thrifty lifestyle, you can leave a comment on any of the blogs or send me an email.

  1. Brenda,
I can’t remember (I’m loosing my mind) if I thanked you for featuring me. Just wanted to let you know that I’ve added you to my blog roll. I’m just now sort of (ha!) starting to get a handle on this blogging gig.
    Soooooooo
    THANKS!
P.S. Kim at Savvy Southern Style is doing a book give away tomorrow of my book. Just an FYI.

  2. I just love your dishes…I must get that same set for my kitchen.

  3. It is a gray day in Wichita as well.
Cleaning the office area. Delightful to see your bright pages.

  8. I absolutely LOVE those dishes. Do you know the name of the pattern at all…or who makes them? They are just beautiful!!!

Love your bright flowers. I had to laugh because I bought a magazine INSTEAD of flowers the day before yesterday. Choices…choices…choices. xo Diana

  9. Just beautiful!

  10. I just love flowers! Yellow is such a cheery color. Your dishes are too cute. :)

Looking forward to the Thrifty series tomorrow, too!

  11. I wonder just how many of us actually need to cut back, sometimes it is hard to tell in Blogdom :) . I feel very alone in this so I am really looking forward to this series.

Pretty flowers and I always like seeing those plates. xo

  12. The bright yellow blooms with those sweet red dishes, well surely they would bring cheer to the dreariest of days! Hope your evening is wonderful!!!

  13. Flowers are a great pick-me-up, but your dishes fill the role on a daily basis!

  14. I love grocery store flowers :) have a wonderful evening, Debbie

  15. Your table looks lovely, and I am so looking forward to your “Thrifty” blogs. I think you might think about sewing aprons. Check out “Stitch In Time” for examples of what you might do. Also maybe buy plain tablecloths and napkins and embellish them with ribbon, rickrack, lace, etc. These are all the things I would love to do if I could sew, but I am hopeless in that area. Enjoy your yellow flowers, they really do cheer things up.

  16. I love that you treat yourself, I do too! Flowers are so happy during the winter when everything is so gray out. I love those dishes each time you show them. So sweet. Looking forward to the new series! Hugs, Linda

  17. Oh, how I love dark, cloudy days. Wish we would have some around here. :)

If you google 222 Fifth Ave. New Country, you will see several places that sell it and sometimes, you can find pieces on Ebay. Bed Bath and Beyond has it.
I noticed one place is selling the 16 piece set for $99.00 (plus shipping).
It is such a cheery set….I love it.
I have too many dishes, tho, so can’t get any more. :( (

  18. Hi Brenda,
Your flowers are beautiful, and your table all set looks adorable.I love your dishes.

    Kathy

  19. Love the lively feeling the flowers added to your table and the dishes are soooo sweet! Have a great evening.

  20. I think one of the reasons those dishes appeal to all of us is there is something for almost everyone in that pattern. Delicacy, and boldness, pattern and color. They are truly lovely.

PS, I would have picked the flowers over the magazine also. I finally found some pink tulips, now my life is happier, despite the raging snowstorm.

  21. You totally made the right choice with the flowers…they look lovely on your table!!…enjoy them..Mariaelena

  22. I can see why so many people ask you about these dishes, they are perfect.

Looking forward to reading all your thrifty ideas!

  23. I am so happy to see that you treated yourself to this pretty bouquet Brenda. I do love that place setting too. My daughter has it too. She also got hers at Marshalls. I had asked her to go and see if they had more, but she said they sold out fast, because she had gone back for more too.
I LOVED your previous post!!! Beautiful shots all through it.
    sending hugs…

  24. I love the dishes! The flowers are beautiful!

  25. Love those dishes, and sunny flowers! I almost splurged on flowers for my tablescape, but I saved myself 5.00 and used faux. I did want those tulips, but they don’t last too long!

  26. Brenda, those dishes are very YOU. I think I remember seeing them at Marshalls which is remarkable as I do not get there often which is good. I am always drawn to a pretty dish pattern. olive

  27. Your flowers look beautiful, like a ray of sunshine. I treated myself to a bouquet today too. I’m hoping it will be sunny out tomorrow so I can take some photos of them and actually do a post this week :)

  28. That’s what I need…flowers!
I’m on a hunt for your dishes…they are too cute! A girl can never have too many dishes!

  29. Brenda ~ thank you once again for reminding us that a little simple bouquet of flowers can lift our spirits. I love your dishes, they are the sweetest and would put a smile on my face as well. Have a wonderful day ;-) Enjoy your flowers

  30. Love the dishes, but I have three different sets of Franciscanware…dishes evrahwhere, and I live alone! I’m visiting my folks in Alabama this week. I showed my eighty-year-old mother some of your posts, and she just fell in love with all you’ve done with your little blue house. First thing this morning, she said, “Turn on your computer and let’s see if that woman has a new blop post!” Yes, blop!

  31. Those dishes are dynamite! I can’t remember seeing a set I have liked as much, for ages. The flowers! Ah yes…I was going to do the same thing today , but the store I was in did not have a good selection. But it is on my list for tomorrow…here is hoping!

  32. I can see why you love those dishes Brenda, they are so pretty! And I just read that they did a study and found that women who have flowers near their bed so that they can see them when they wake up are more likely to feel positive, energetic, and happy, and the feeling lasts all day! How cool is that?!

    Kat :)

  33. Love the yellow flowers AND the sweet dishes.

  34. I loved those dishes so much I ended up getting some for myself! Love them.

  35. Dear Brenda, Beautiful post! I just love your tablescape, the red, blue and white with those “brighten the day” wonderful yellow flowers! I think your new series will be great!
    Have a good day, Maki

  36. I too love those dishes and always wondered. I thought they looked like Cath Kidston’s.
I have to say, I was never a blue person until I started following your blog. I think I got so tired of that “country blue” that was around awhile back that I thought I didn’t like blue but now I think I’m a changed woman! And dishes and ceramics..I was never into them too much and now I can’t get enough! What have you done to me, Brenda???? LOL!!
P.S. Love the flowers and your table is the prettiest one yet!

  37. Love the flowers and the dishes are too cute. I thought they were Cath Kidston’s too. I was wondering where you got the red checked tablecloth; I love it!

  38. Hi Brenda, I love your cozy little house and all that resides there.
I have a question about your cute dishes. Are they from Greengate, and if so, where did you find them?
