The other day I signed up for a free 15 day trial of Carbonite. It is a computer back up system.
But then today a friend mentioned she didn't think there was actually a way for them to back up Blogger, or any other format like it.
So I just got off the phone with Carbonite support. Seems she is correct.
Your blog is not a file. It backs up files automatically.
He said unless you were to email your blog posts to yourself on a non-internet email system, such as Outlook, it would possibly back them up. But, for instance, I use Yahoo and Gmail. Not going to back that up.
So if you signed up for a free trial this week after I wrote that post, I wanted you to have this information before you gave them your credit card to pay after the initial 15 days.
It will back up your photos and the things it says on their website. But you don't see a mention of blogs. Because for many of us, our posts are being written directly on Blogger. If we wrote them and kept them on a word processing program in a file, it might be a different scenario.
So I'm back to square one. I know of people who have had their blogs disappear. I thought this would protect me. It will not.
Just wanted you to have the same information that I do. If you know something I don't about this, please leave it in a comment or email me.

Sent you a link on how I back up my blog. Not sure if you are already doing this.
You can back up your blog to your hard drive.
I'm such a blog newbie, I'm watching you and waiting...then I might try it.

Yep. You can't back up a file that is on the internet. Back-up systems only store files that you have created on your computer's hard drive. Hope that makes sense. Hubby and I back up our files on our computers multiple times each day, using Apple's Time Capsule system, but if Blogger ever loses my blog, it's adios el bloggo.
Back up your blog on Blogger and save it to your computer's hard drive. Then use Carbonite to back up your computer's files, including your backed up blog.

I often feel like I am getting by on a wing and a prayer with my blog. I will wait and see if there is a solution out there. xo
I used Carbonite for a while, but it doesn't back up external drives ( at least it didn't at that time). I keep all my photos and scrap booking on an external drive so that's important to me. Now I use Crash Plan and am very happy. Don't know about the blog backup feature, but it will back it up if your blog is downloaded to your computer.
I just did a search, Brenda. Does this link help?

ADDITIONAL NOTE to the video: Settings, then Basic, then OTHER to get to the "Export Blog" tab.
I just tried it and it seems to have done the trick; I hadn't thought of backing up my blog until your recent comments. Thanks.

Brenda, Hi from Florida. I let Claudia worry about my blog because I am blogging inept. Love the blogs you gave us a look at today.
Happy Weekend,
Meredith
I use Live Writer now a days to write my post...will it back up Live Writer?
Pat
I have no suggestions because I know nothing.
I just wanted to say that I love the picture of you and your doggies. You look like a different person. You look good girl. So much healthier.
I am wondering if Live Writer makes a file on my computer also...and if I can back it up through my External harddrive.
Thanks for letting us know Brenda, I hope that we all find a solution.

I backup my blog by going to dashboard-settings-basic. Under basic you will see import blog, export blog, delete blog. Click export blog and Bloger will create an xml file for you to save to your computer. Save the xml with a suitable file name and/or in a folder so you can easily find and distinguish it from a backup template xml file as they have an identical icon.
I'm not sure how "safe" this is but it's what I do. Hope it helps.
Best,
Bonnie
Thanks for this info. I still wish we could find a way to back up our posts but short of compiling a book, like you can on blogger, I am just stuck. If you get any new info, please share.
Hugs, Noreen
being new to the blogger world ... i look to you for news. hopefully something will work out soon. (:
I have been backing up my blog by using the dashboard-settings-export feature. It creates a file on your hard drive and is quick and easy to do. I have an external devise by Seagate, but have been thinking about an online like Carbonite.
I haven't been backing up my blog either. I wasn't sure how to do it. Apparently you can do it through Blogger under "Setting" and "Export" as some have commented here. I'm going to try it and see if it works. This has been a very helpful post - luckily someone out in blogland usually knows the answers.
The thought of losing my work scares me and I haven't put nearly the work into mine yet that some of you seasoned bloggers have! I understand that you could save the body of your posts onto your hard drive or an external hard drive but I'm guessing there is no way to save your blog in it's entirety?
Like Claudia said export it from blogger and it is saved in a file and then carbonite can recover it.
I just decided I would begin doing mine on word and backing it up to a flash drive and my external drive.
one way is to simply store each post on a word file and/or print each post out and save it to a folder/book - that way you can even read what youve written in a book without having to put the computer on. This is what I do - save all my best posts to a book where I paste them in and re read from time to time! That way youre not relying on technology at all! ( I must be a luddite at heart lol)
Hi Brenda:
I have been using Blog2Print and The Cutest Blog on the Block (same company) to create books of my blog since my very first post. I usually go to their site and create my books every six months or so.
Not only do they save my writings and photos in book form, but some day, these books will be a record of my life for my family to read.
You and your readers might want to consider their service, which links directly to your blogs...and if you don't want to save your writings as books, they also have disk downloads available - either manually or automatically, for a fee.
Hugs from Florida,
Donna
Thanks so much everyone! I have been super concerned after reading about all going on in "blogger land"...A blog is a labor of love and a whole lotta thought and work.
I think I am headed from here to try the "export" method...
whew!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Thanks Brenda,,
you saved me from enrolling in Carbonite!
and reading through these comments, I think I shall try some of their methods..
interesting!!
warmest hugs..

I used to blog in the Xanga community, which is sooooo much more user friendly than Blogger. They actually have their own archive system. You can request your posts ever how often you wish and then you download them to your PC. They create their own files. No charge.
I think the "blog2book" feature might be an option I'd consider.
you can check a search on " make your blog into book". Your whole blog pictures and all in books.
I was going to make some of the same suggestions that others have made. One thing I have done with articles I have posted, particularly ones which required a lot of research or time, is to draft them in my word processing program and then copy and paste the content into the blogger template. This way, the content is still on your computer and can be printed or stored in other ways. I also have a Western Digital External Hard Drive which backs up documents and photos.
The suggestion re emailing them to yourself will certainly work if you use a Mac as I do. You have online storage as well as storage on your computer.

Hi Brenda,
Here is a how to from Funky Junk Interiors on how to back up your blog
http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2011/01/back-up-your-blog-today.html
And it's free.
Hope it helps.
Laura
I use wordpress.com and there is an export button, so I export my post, pictures, pages, etc. and then store the file in dropbox. If you don't have dropbox, you can sign up for free, and you get 2G storage. You can earn extra free storage by referring friends. So far, that is what I'm doing. Link to dropbox: http://db.tt/63D2bjH .
Sorry, I meant wordpress.org.
Thanks so much!! BLog is now backed up (just did the export!) Have thought about the blog2book and hope someone will share a couple pics of theirs if they did it...wonderful help!
HUGS
Oh my gosh - gotta look into that!

explains how to import and export Blogger blogs.
Just catching up...
I export my blog and put the file on my hard drive where Carbonite finds it and backs it up.
Carbonite will also back up external hard drives provided they are connected to you computer AND you have selected those files to also be backed up. Easy as pie!
I have mine on my computer, external HD, some are on flash drives and carbonite. I like redundancy! :)
