Thrifty Living 2012: Daycations

This week the Frugal Five are exploring Daycations for Thrifty Living 2012.

Most of my daycations seem to involve shopping junk stores or exploring nature.

For me it is extremely gratifying to drive out into the country and explore. To take pics of barns and livestock and trees and pastures. And...it's free except for your gasoline. Since gasoline is rather high right now, I haven't taken one in awhile.

But then nature's beauty is all around us. If gas is too high to hit the road, how about taking a long walk. Good exercise too. And it's completely free. I love to do this.

And I often meet new friends along the way. Which makes it extra special.

And then there's the junk stores and garage sales. I found this old wash tub and the bucket inside it at a junk store. A day spent junking fills my heart with gladness for sure!

Sometimes I may not have much money. And I may not even buy anything. But it's the hunt that is fun. The sights and history and inspiration I gain.

I found this fun and colorful old sign while junking too.

And maybe you can have the best of both worlds. On your way junking or going to garage sales, take your camera and bring some pasture scenes home with you to enjoy.

Pack a picnic lunch and head for the open road. It will cleanse your soul and you can leave the city behind.

Joining the rest of the Frugal Five...

Good Morning Brenda! I love 'daycations' and for the past 2 years that's all we've done. This year though we're heading back up to Canada to visit my family. When we lived in the city we would take our daycations to the country. We LOVED driving the country roads and looking at the peaceful farmyards and critters. The pull of the country became so strong that we moved to a small country town but still continued our country drives. Nine months later the pull of the country won us over and we sold our beautiful Victorian home in town and moved to a run down farm in the middle of 'nowhere' and we love it. We still take 'daycations' but just not as often. They are great opportunities for photo shoots! Hope your day is a good one.

Brenda- I love the little Daycations, too. I always enjoy following along behind you on your journeys. You have a wonderful eye for things and it is fun to see what you come up with. Love that old washtub and buckets. Now THAT was a real find. Also love the sign. God bless and I hope you have a great day- xo Diana

What a lovely way to spend the day and so inexpensively, too. I like taking the "scenic route" when we go to the mall. We could take the interstate, but the back roads are much more interesting, plus in the spring and summer, wild flowers grow near the road where an old farm used to be. Happy Daycation!

Finding pleasure in the simplest things.
I actually am going to take a day off from working OT and my girlfriend and I are driving up to take a tour of My Old Historic House bloggers house. I have told myself I can not buy anything but i will take my camera and browse!
I sure am looking forward to that day.

Isn't it amazing when we open our eyes and slow down a bit. A walking daycation certainly can do this. I enjoyed your photos this morning like usual! Hugs!!

I haven't taken a drive to some of the nearby thrift stores and junk shops in awhile! That is a really fun day for me! Hugs! ♥

My kind of day for sure - especially since I junk for a living! I even go to junk sales, flea markets etc. when I'm on regular vacations. Nothing gets my heart racing like digging through treasures. Well, slow days driving or walking around just enjoying the view are pretty great too.

Your suggestions are sane & sensible. Learning to appreciate the beauty in ordinary things, incorporating physical exercise, and finding joy and contentment in what is near without going into debt is TRUE vacationing to me!

I am the same. I prefer a day looking through thrift stores or yard sales than expensive antique stores. This last weekend when we were away some of my best buys were from a little thrift store I always visit. The antique stores are so high any more.

I love how there is a version for every budget, very good hints Brenda.

We live on a lake, so the staycation is right in our back yard...literally. The hard part is putting aside all the "to do's" and actually vacation in my own home.

I love to go junking! Could do it every day!

Vacation: an extended period of recreation. That was one of the definitions of vacation. I like to travel but can find that stressful at times. My idea of a vacation is spent doing something I love. Sewing, knitting, junk stores or just being a couch potato watching old movies. Hope you are doing well, Brenda.

I so agree... This is exactly what I love to do.
Have a wonderful day.

Great pictures. Before I had kids and I was newly married, my husband traveled several weekends a month. That made it possible for me to go antiquing with my sister. I would call up and say "what are you doing?" She knew I was up to something and I would either want to go somewhere or rearrange something in my home. Even her daughters would ask if Aunt Alaina was going to kidnap them that weekend to go somewhere. It was always and adventure and finding a treasure was the quest. I do try to take my kids to the flea markets once in a while, but 3 of them and one of me can make it a little hard. Have fun on your hunts.

What a lovely post Brenda. My husband and I used to do just excactly this before we had our daughter. We would take the car on summer days or evenings and just drive out in the country and explore. It was so great. Or we would go garage sale shopping. Ohh how I miss that...

I love these little daycations, I take them regularly.

I love to take these little 'getaways' and enjoy days of just doing what I want. Junking, taking photos and enjoying the beauty around me! With gas prices like they are I'm taking fewer but still it can be 'cheap' entertainment!

Brenda, Your idea of a daycation resonates with me! I take little rides in the country all the time and I love looking for little treasures along the way. Lat summer I took my camera with me and drove the back roads home from work and stopped along the way to snap some photos.

Meandering with no particular destination is so much fun and yes, soothing for the soul.

We love junking trips in the country but gas has soared here today unfortunately.

Day trips are my favorite kind of vacation. I love to hop in my car, pick up a friend, and head to New Jersey or Pennsylvania. We pack our cameras and some water and off we go. It is so relaxing and makes nice memories. Overnight stays are great fun too. Haven't done that in a little while. I find it expensive to hire a pet sitter ($50 per day for two little birdies!). xo

Hi Brenda,
Love your Daycation idea. When I was working I used to allot myself 8 hour blocks of time on the weekend. I reasoned ...we work 8 hr days...so I treated each block of time as a day, starting from when I finished work at 4pm on Friday. This gave me 7 lots of 8hrs finishing at midnight Sunday night. I didn't do this every weekend .....just often enough to be a little holiday. just knowing I could sleep for two, 8hr 'days' sounded good.
I's all in our attitude.
God Bless

Dear Brenda ~ So sorry you have one more problem on your plate. They do all come at once, it seems.
I would definitely look into SS Disability as that is what they do. There are so many women's groups out there, too with a wealth of information.
I, too, have had them since I was 12 and couldn't sit in a classroom and pay attention. I am now 77, and with tons of reading, finding a good MD, and having medical tests done like thyroid, etc. to rule out everything else.
It can rule your life if you let it and I know you are too smart to have that happen.
Lastly, I found that having Faith, not necessarily church, will be your best friend. God gave you this talent and look how well you are going to do. Just one step at a time and you can do it.
Many are praying for you.... Be nice to Brenda!
