My Closest Comrades

We sit on the porch, my close comrades and I, and watch the birds do what birds do. Take a bath in the bird bath. Then fly up to the fence top and clean themselves thoroughly. Shake off the water. Smooth their ruffled feathers. Then fly out yonder.
These two are good at what they do. Watching and barking. Taking stock of their surroundings and being on guard. They live with me and they reside in my heart.
But their most important role in life, is simply to be my companions and to be loved. And they are that. Absolutely. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Charlie Ross will sometimes take it upon himself to run out and dart at the birds. When the squirrels are in short supply.
Oftentimes they just sit alongside me as I sit and survey what I’ve done in the yard. What I need to do. Plans and ideas swirl in my head. And they sit with me, content.
They can be counted on to just watch me for cues. If I am happy, Abigail and Charlie Ross are content and playful. If I am sad, they stay close, they fret and worry. But let me know I will never be alone on their watch.

Oh, whatever would we do without them? Their sweet little faces, so tuned into our feelings and moods. The companionship they give us, worth more than any amount of money.
These two have helped me transition into a new state in a little blue house. They have licked my tears and been beside me every single step of the way.
At night when I get into bed and turn off the lamp, I feel two individual scratches on my shoulders. I lift the covers and they scurry underneath to be next to me.
This kinship I feel with them, it is unparalleled. It is beyond special. It is the bond we feel with our closest comrades. Our furry best friends.

We are not alone, as long as they are there with us.

  2. Tears are coming down…exactly how I feel about my Lucas and my Mateo. This understanding between them and myself is so unique…and so priceless! I feel happy that there is someone else – you! – who knows exactly and shares this connection.

  3. What more could we ask for in life, than animals who love us no matter what..Who feel our needs and ask for nothing more but a pat on the head, a hug and a kiss, a cozy bed and something to fill their tummies..
They don’t gossip about us or love someone else more.
Your pictures of the Robin and Cardinal are magnificent~~~~just like I could reach in to my computer screen and touch them..
Your cozy blue house really looks like home now.. Your flowers are doing so nicely..

  17. Yes, I understand and agree completely. I have a little faraway dream that someday my husband and I will have a ranch type place where we keep rescued dogs. I can’t imagine anything better than living with an entire gang of dog babies.
My Tinley is a light in my heart.

Your pups are precious Brenda..Isn’t it amazing how they are more loving and compassionate than a lot of human beings are..My cats are this way too..when I am sad or start to cry..they seem to know and come to me with hugs and love..It is such a wonderful feeling isn’t it?? You 3 take care of each other..Hugs!

  24. Charlie and Abi are so precious looking! I love Milo and Layla to pieces and when I am home alone, I carry on quite a conversation with them!

Your pots of flowers look healthy and pretty! I do the same thing, look around my yard and imagine what would look good where! I chip away a little at a time when I can…it can be expensive.

Hope you have a good week. It’s raining cats and dogs here!

    XO,

  25. The last picture is priceless! Did you get them together or did one come first? You have to tell us the story of how you came to find them.

  26. So true…I’d be lost without my feline furbabies. I have memories of my parents sitting in the shade with their dog (and the neighbor’s dog). All watched the world go by unless something caught the interest of the dogs!

  27. Such a cute post. They are such good doggies. I love their ears…..I am so glad that you have them. I love mine as well.

  28. You are so right! I love my little “comrades” too!

  30. How sweet and cute your two fur babies are! I don’t have dogs, but I do have three cats who are my companions and so loved. Thanks for such a sweet post!

  31. I understand your closeness to your babies very well. My little guy a bit bigger than your’s, he’s a golden retriever but let me tell you he has a heart that is gold and as big as the sun.
He’s my buddy, my confidant, my best friend. I thank God everyday for the wonderful furry friends He has given us.

  32. Oh your post truly touched my heart. I too have a companion just like yours. I do not know what I would do without my Toby, he, like yours, is always by my side, happy when I am, sad when I am. I don’t think I could exist without my best friend by my side. Give your two big hugs from me.

  33. How sweet! And I love that you appreciate them so much and have so much love to give!

  34. I feel the same way about my 2 Yorkies. They are the best little companions and much fun, always happy to see us come home. They are ever watchful and like you said, on guard. Anyone steps foot on the front steps and my dogs know it long before me. They have their own personalities. I was always the dog lover but not my husband. Today he commented that he never knew he could love a dog the way he does ours.
    Susanne :)
