Tiny House Kitchen Design

Most of you that have been following me for the last year or so know of my fascination and love for tiny homes. I live in a small house now, 1000 square feet. But I know I could get by with less square footage. Thereby making my footprint on this earth smaller and my utility bills less at the same time.

This house is a Whidbey House, and it is in Arkansas.

The only thing I am unsure about is climbing those stairs to the bed above! If I could figure that out, this house would be very doable if I had a place to put it and the money to build it.

Even if, unlike me, you don’t have a yen for a tiny home, there are components you can take away from these photos that you could work into your current home. (Don’t you love those chickens on the porch?)

I love open kitchen shelving. However, it can look cluttered fast. By using just a few colors for the dishes and such on these shelves, they’ve cut down on the visual clutter. By building in a banquet, there is storage underneath the seating. In a tiny home, the key is to make every square foot count.

I love the airy feel of this house, even though structurally it is tiny. Look at those high ceilings that give you a feeling of spaciousness. And the open floor plan is essential in making this work. If you want to read about this whole house, go here.

Here are four more tiny kitchens I found at thekitchn.com.

Does one of these float your boat? I think I like the last one best of these four.

  1. Brenda ~ these kitchens are just adorable. I love the last one too~
I don’t think I could climb that ladder to get to bed. Getting down would be harder. I like my feet on “terra firma”
    Have a great day

    • I think I’d have to have the bed downstairs too.
      Brenda

    • Thanks for all the nice words about my house. We (my boyfriend, dog, and me) are really enjoying it. The loft you see above the kitchen is just a guest space (or nap/reading space as I like to use it). Our bedroom is actually located past the kitchen. :)

  2. what a lovely little space – i’m smitten!! thanks so much for sharing this bright happy space with us!

  3. You should have read about the Whidbey more closely – the design has 2 bedrooms and the loft is sort of a guest room. You wouldn’t have to climb the stairs!

  4. The tiniest kitchen I ever had was in a studio apartment – you pulled back the louvered doors and there was a very small counter with 2 cupboards, a mini size stove and a small refrigerator and sink. That was it. I managed to cope with it for a year.

  5. Love these tiny houses. We are thinking about downsizing, but because I have a big man for a husband…he needs room. I especially liked your post on your coffee station. I took a look at where I have my coffee pots and did a little transformation yesterday. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas. Your head must be swimming with ideas.

Brenda I have a tiny kitchen, so it is always nice to see how adorable they can be. My daughter loves tiny houses and shared with me a web site http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com Now this is tiny! Have a great day! ♥

  7. I love that first little house but I, too, wouldn’t want to climb to that bed! I love the last little kitchen best, too. xo Diana

  8. Annette Tracy says:

I’ve always had small kitchens, I wouldn’t know what to do with a big one. I follow Tumbleweed Houses and some are so cute, but I don’t think I could downsize quite that small. The kitchen w/the brick wall really calls to me. You have such great ideas.

    • I just love these homes. Just think how the McMansion people would react if they thought they had to give up their massive homes and live in one of these. Doubt it would go over too well.

I like the last kitchen that you show.. I like the “U” style and love the window over the sink~~~~something that I don’t have. Everything would be so convenient to get to in that kitchen.. I think I’d need a bit more color though~~~Lots of red !
    Charlotte

    • I finally have a window over my sink. But have to keep the curtains closed because it looks out over those trashy kids next door.
      Brenda

  10. My kitchen is disproportionately small compared to the size of our home. But we make it work. Minimizing clutter and not collecting tons of stuff is crucial. I love these bright and happy spaces you’ve shown us.
I wouldn’t want to descend that “staircase” in the middle of the night for a drink of water or trip to the wash room.

  11. I like tiny houses but as others have said, I need it on one level. what a perfect excuse it would give me to get rid of more stuff, which I plan to do anyway this spring.
    love the last kitchen..

    • I would kind of like to be challenged to keep only what I could get into one of those homes. I’d have to think long and hard about what is most special to me.
      Brenda

  12. I love all these kitchens! They are so cute and charming. I wouldn’t want a loft bed at my age either – especially with having to go to the bathroom 1 or 2 times in the middle of the night! ;-)

  13. Penny @ From Harvest To Table & The Comforts of Home says:

What a great tiny house. Small kitchen are so much more efficient. Our new home we are moving into has a galley style kitchen, which I love. I have never been one for a huge kitchen with an island that you have to walk around constantly.

  14. They are all wonderful! It’s amazing what you can pack in a small area. We have a really small kitchen too ~ you really have to be organized.

    • I’d rather have a small space and be organized than have a big space and just end up piling stuff in it. Because that’s what people tend to do when they have more space.
      Brenda

  15. PS – Did you see the blog of the owners of the Arkansas house?

  16. No, but thanks for the link. I’m headed over there!

The fourth kitchen caught my eye, too. However, when I looked closer at the kitchen with the brick wall, the black at top over the fridge, and white chairs, I thought it would be cute painted in more harmonious colors, to me, anyway. I live in a 1000 sq ft. house. My teeny kitchen used to be aggravating when the kids were still home. Now with my bad knees, I love having everything in the kitchen four steps away or less. A big house with a large kitchen would actually be a bad thing to me at this time of my life.

  18. We have a tiny kitchen.. which almost burned down last night.. I’ll be posting about it later, but now we’re off to find a new microwave and stove, the current ones are melted.. ::sigh:: Teresa

  19. I like the last one best also. That gorgeous window with all that sunlight is a winner for me. I love smaller homes also and when we get our next transfer or Steve eventually retires, we are for sure downsizing. Empty nesting also means an empty house with rooms that rarely get used.

  20. That place is to stinkin cute:) I do agree that straight up climb may be to much as we age. It is just darling isn’t it?

  21. Cute kitchens. But, then, what do I need a kitchen for????

    Judy

  22. I love the cozy factor of smaller homes and see a trend with more homes going that direction these days. Those are some cute kitchen pics! I think as long as you have ample counter space to cook and prepare foods along with adequate storage, that’s enough. You don’t have to have alot of square footage, just good design.

  23. Hi Brenda…such cute little houses! I loved all of them…any home is a home as long as its yours…big or small who cares?I am all about comfort and every one of these looked so comfy!! Thanks for sharing these today!! Love ya! Carol

  24. love these tiny houses.. I too have a fascination with this type of house..Realistically…however.. i fear i would not be organised enough to enjoy one.

  25. In a small space you can do way more creative things – for sure!

  26. Tiny houses are very cozy, I have a small kitchen it’s great to cook in everything close at hand
    Merle…….

  27. I was reading a blog last night that featured a family of 4 living in 450 sq or 600 sq ft (can’t remember). Their 3 daughters shared a bedroom and they had a triple bedbunk set up – very ingenious. I loved their house – it really used every inch and was so well organized. It was homey and not stark but not cluttered. That’s what I strive for homey, comfortable but not living like a monk! I think 1 person living in that square footage is very doable.

  28. Kelly Palmer says:

Hi Brenda, I love the kitchen with the exposed brick, beautiful!

  29. Love the one with the brick walls. I’m with you on the stairs and if I did get up them, I would probably fall over the rail in the night :)

  30. Hi Brenda,
What a difficult choice between each one of the darling and cozy little kitchens. I, especially, like the one with the black and white tile floor. In another life I would choose that floor, red gingham curtains and crisp white cabinets. I love all the light.
Thanks for sharing this fun post, my friend,
    Carolynn

  31. That first house is so cute! My kitchen is about four times bigger yet I don’t see a single thing I would miss with this small kitchen, and it is twice as functional.

  32. I love the “tiny house movement.” We are now a family of only 3, and our house is about 2100 square feet. I’d like to be able to downsize, but our house is paid for and it was built by my great-grandfather, so I would hate to leave it in a way. IF we had someone in the family who could use the extra space, THEN I wouldn’t mind leaving it to someone like that. And I’d have to figure out how to get rid of my stuff, considering that I’m a pack rat. Lots to think about!
