Candles & Seashells

truck5

Sometimes I like to put candles in bowls. But there’s the problem of not having them stand up straight due to the way the bowl curves in at the bottom.

truck6

I did this arrangement last night. And my solution was to take some flat marbles that I had and cover the bottom a few inches before I placed my candles in. You can kind of dig your candles into the marbles if they’re not wanting to stand up straight.

Then I settled my candles in. And started adding seashells all around to keep them upright. Plus the seashells gives it dimension and texture that I like.

The vintage mason jars I painted with spray paint before it got cold. I still have specks of paint on my glasses as a reminder… (Note to self: next time wear plastic safety glasses.)

I’m considering painting the old trunk white come spring. What do you think? I’m thinking all the scratches wouldn’t show up then.

The red truck got tired of the dining room and chugged its way into the living room…

Here’s the end of the couch closest to the front door. I’ve pretty much stopped buying magazines. The prices are ridiculous. I put my favorites I’ve collected over time in this vintage wooden box. And told myself no more will fit in. Thus can’t buy more.

I know at some point I’ll see one that will make me positively ga-ga, but we’ll cross that path when we get to it.

The yellow mums are filling out nicely. The buds are blooming and I find joy every time I walk through to the kitchen and view them.

Please don’t paint the red truck. It is special just the way it is.
I subscribe to magazines-keeps the buying price down. I sell my magazines in my booth otherwise I would be overrun with them. Who really needs 25 years of Country Living? LOL.

    • I wouldn’t even THINK of painting that red truck. I seldom paint anything. But that red truck is absolutely off limits!

  2. Thanks for the tutorial on the candles/bowl, I’ve always been frustrated trying it without flat rocks on the bottom. Re: painting the trunk, I vote yes! Maybe white, maybe blue, maybe anything that makes you happy (like your flowers).

  3. Hi Brenda, I love the candles and sea shells together. I look forward to your blog daily and I am now starting over, with my old blog Amelia Rose Cottage. Please come visit me and I will be showing a pillow you made My daughter bought it for me as a housewarming gift she also follows your blog.

  4. Brenda, please don’t paint the little red truck. The paint would cover up all it’s character and charm.

  5. Oh- I love that little red truck…it is just so cute! I love the candles and sea shells- great vignette. xo Diana

  6. Were you teasing us with painting the truck? It is so cute, evert time I see it I want one, too!

I know what you mean about the cost of magazines, Brenda. I used to toss them into my cart all the time, but now I take the time to look thorough the entire magazine first. Often, I put it back. $10-$13 per magazine is ridiculous. I, too, keep my old magazines and go back and look at them. I have gotten rid of a few that had pretty dated decor but most of them I keep. Love the red truck!

  8. I love the little red truck and the candle’s with the seasheels

I love candles and the way you styled them in a bowl surrounded by seashells is so creative. I have not been able to find any good magazines lately, so I don’t think you’re missing out on much right now. Everything I pick up seems blah compared to what I’ve been able to see on blogs anyway. In fact, I’m seeing some magazines are showing homes that I’ve already seen on blogs. They need some new material!

  10. Hi Brenda. I just saw the cutest fabric hoop rounds on the blog on “My 1929 Charmer”. Thought you might like to see them

  11. I love the table where you have your quilts, I have one just like it in my entry. I know what you mean about magazines, I love them but they have become too expensive.

  12. She said she’s think of painting the truNk, not the truCk!

I’m not sure about painting the truNk. But I do like how that plant stand in front of the fireplace looks in white. I like the beat-up look of the trunk, however. It looks like it once belonged to someone who used it for trips on a riverboat. (I just read a biography of Mark Twain. Can you tell?)

    • THANK YOU! It didn’t occur to me that I probably should not be writing about “truck” and “trunk” in the same post. I was just asking for trouble and didn’t know it! So you like the beat up look of the trunk? Hm, something I’ll be thinking about.
      Brenda

  13. The candles are beautiful in the bowl. Let that truck drive itself all over the room:}

  14. I think the red truck is perfect as is :-) Every time I look around your rooms in the pictures, Brenda.. it is just so cozy and cheerful. Especially love all the quilts and colors.

  15. and ooooooh, I see you meant the TRUNK…LOLOL…

  16. Charlotte says:

    Hi Brenda,
I vote yes on painting the trunk white! Love your candles in the red bowl!
    Xo,
    Charlotte

  17. I love your style. The candles look great in the red bowl. Love the painted Mason jars as well. Your quilts are beautiful. Love them folded there!! Pretty!
    Karen

  18. I personally think you should leave the truCk red and paint the truNk white!!!

    Judy

  19. Oh no…please don’t paint the red truck white…it is perfect!!! Great idea for holding your candles. I love your magazine rack, I too don’t buy as many as I used too because I have sooo many. (keep them all) I just keep going back to the ones I’ve saved. :)
Hope your Thursday has been amazing!!!

Reread the post. It really does say trunk, LoL. So I guess my next appointment is to the eye doctor. One thing of comfort—-at least I’m not the only one with old eyes!

  21. Ah just one letter and we have a word storm…I read it as truck not Trunk also at first…must because all of our eyes went directly to the brilliantly beautiful little toy.

Have you tried looking on Issuu? There are some good free subscriptions there….being Canadian all magazines are expensive, even when our dollar was worth more. I force my self to take a second look on another visit, and then only if the magic is still there will I consider it.

That is a hard decision to make about painting the trunk. I like it as is, but I can visualize it in white and that could be pretty for spring and summer. I have an antique 1860′s family round top trunk. Its original color was similar to the one you have. It was/is metal with oak trim. Years ago, when my dad and I refinished it, we found many different layers of paint on it. Black, Dark Green, Cadmium Yellow, and then again black, I suppose every generation added another layer of paint. One thing I know for sure, it is a lot easier to put the paint on than it is to take it off. All of the grooves around the metal trim make it difficult to strip. So be sure whatever color you paint it is either one you will like for a long time, or that it is an easy color (like white) to paint over. Love the way your candles look surrounded by seashells. How refreshing, seashells instead of snow.

  23. If your trunk is a valuable antique I’d think twice before painting it.

  24. susie @ Persimmon Moon Cottage says:

I forgot to mention how cute the little white stool with the blue patterned top and ball fringe is. It is adorable.

  25. I use seashells in all of my decor but candles in a bowl is a wonderful idea! I’ll try this! Hugs!

  26. Oh my! That red vintage truck really caught my eye! My St. Vinney’s print, with it’s wonderful story, has an amazing red vintage truck in it. I can’t wait to get the print back from being framed at Michaels. You will love all the red in it.

  27. Linda Blackmore says:

DO NOT PAINT THE RED TRUCK!! Some old things are improved with a makeover. If you paint this truck, you eliminate it’s monetary value and destroy it’s charm!! It will look like a cheap China reproduction. LEAVE IT ALONE. The scratches and dings and dents are the charming thing about it.

  28. Linda Blackmore says:

Oh, how funny!!!! I read TRUCK, not TRUNK, TOO. hahahahaha As to the trunk, I probably would paint it white!! haha They tend to not be so valuable anymore. hahaha For those of you old enough to remember Gilda Radner as Emily Litella from Saturday Night Live, “Oh. That’s very different….never mind”!

  29. Brenda,
Sorry to hijack the thread, the POISE post has no comment section to get entries in. Please help.

  30. LOL! I read truck too – but this is a comment about your glasses. I paint furniture ALL the time and alcohol wipes are the way I keep my vision clear. Hmmm…..is there a dot (or 5!) and that is why I read truck?

  31. Oh! I thought you wrote truck too! I was sad..then happy to see what you said..trunk! Weird!

  32. I love the table with the glass lamp and the quilts underneath. I’ve never seen a top like that before, it’s amazingly gorgeous and an idea I may have to borrow from you.

  33. Donna sent me and I’m enjoying your blog; totally cute and the house is adorable. Sand in the dish will let the candles stand upright and leave your marbles for a pretty antique Mason jar. Your comment about paint on your glasses is funny; reminded me the last time I spray painted, wind drift got paint speckles all over my cordless phone. How about throw a white cloth over the trunk and see how you like living with it white. I’ve got one similar but would never paint it; love it just as it is…with character.

  34. Your candle vignette is so pretty, Brenda. I use those glass marbles all the time to level the bottom of a vase or other dish — great invention! Oh, please don’t paint that little red truck! Those scratches and wear marks are all part of the charm.

    Carol

  35. The response to this post was so funny….I’m still laughing.
Maybe you could antique the trunk.
    Balisha

  36. I am still laughing about the truck/trunk comments!
