Chickens In A Jar Project

500chick1

When I was a child, we had chickens. I was the one sent to the hen house much of the time to gather the eggs. There was an irascible old rooster that stayed close to the gate. I’d have to open the gate and make a run for the hen house, or he’d peck at my legs.

I really enjoyed those chickens. I’d shut the door once I was safely inside. I’d stand and watch the hens in their little nest bins. I loved their soft feathers. They’d cluck and make racket, as hens do.

I recall that the sun’s rays came through the slatted roof in places and drew stripes across the wooden nest bins. I’d stand there in the midst of the dust motes as I waited for my hands to warm up. Then I would gently lift the hens and gather their eggs.

These eggs of course did not look like what you buy in the store. And they tasted much better too.

I have such fond memories of the chickens that I decided to make a little hen and rooster scenario in a jar.

500chick2

I had this jar that had been full of marshmallows. And for some reason I could just envision chickens in it. {I’d love to live somewhere I could have chickens.}

I had everything at hand. The graphics I printed off the internet. I’ve got a Pinterest Board for graphics and love to find ones I think I might like to use for an impromptu project. If you need graphics, I’ve got lots to share.

Like this little cutie-patootie above. Guess she’s headed out to gather eggs. (Watch out for that mean old rooster!)

The Jumbo Eggs was part of the graphic with the chicken. I cut the chicken out and glued card stock behind it to make it thicker where it would stand up better in the jar. Then I looked through my stash and found the rooster and did the same. I didn’t have feathers, so I “made do” with some cream colored leaves I had.

So I don’t really know what to call this except for: My Chickens In A Jar Project. Maybe Memories In A Jar would be even better.

  1. Brenda this is so cute! I love the ‘memories in a jar’! I think projects like this are very special. Hugs, Linda

  2. really sweet idea, cluck, cluck!

  3. I know what you mean about farm fresh eggs… They are so much better than the ones bought in the store. We get our egg supply from the neighbors. Its always exciting to see what color the eggs are, some are various shades of brown, some are green and once in a while we get a blue one!!! Being a city boy, I had to train hubby about the egg carton exchange. And I had to train my daughter who is date conscious on food items, to disregard the dates on the egg cartons!!!

  4. It’s so perfectly sweet! I might just make one–but we have chickens in the yard…
I do LOVE this idea, Brenda!

What great memories of gathering eggs, Brenda. I love your memory jar–so charming. ♥

I have the same memories about a rooster, Brenda. I used to collect our neighbor’s eggs when they went on vacation.. They had a mean, old rooster.. He spoted me one day as I was collecting the eggs and chased me across the lot that was between the neighbor’s house and my house.. His spurs looked like they were three inches long. I was just a a little girl and that mean old rooster really frightened me.. I think I broke some of the eggs as I ran..
Your jar is very country with your chickens and eggs in it.. Soo cute. You are getting quite a collection of country critters.
I enjoy seeing your new creations.
    I hope you’ll have a great day.
    Hugs, Charlotte

  7. Seriously adorable Brenda. You have such a way of capturing your memories to share with us. Love it!

  8. Oh, I adore the illustrations of children by Eloise Wilkins. Also, I once had chickens when we lived on a farm many years ago. I cherish the photos I have of my children holding the baby chicks. Your “chicken jar” is wonderful, and the ribbon decoration on top really sets it off.

  9. Goodness, how different your experience from mine of being rushed by about half a hundred chickens when I took my little pail to help Daddy feed the neighbors’ hens. Grandma’s chickens were a nice little flock, but these white monsters seemed determined to knock me down before I could get to their trough. Good thing the rooster was not in evidence. He could have reached higher than my fat little legs! :)

  10. I absolutely love it. I have the same jar with a red lid. I might have to copy you. Darn rooster. I heard they can be just devils.

  11. Just adorable, Brenda theses are the reasons I started to read your blog in the first place! Very cute. -Judy A-

  12. So cute!!

We had chickens for a while and I’d broken my r. arm and it was in a sling for 3 mths. One day I went dn to get the eggs w/the sling on my r. arm, basket in hand, and the rooster charged me, and there I was trying to swat at him w/the little wire basket in my L. hand, screaming at him, or I should say swearing at him at the top of my lungs: You blankety blank, get away from me. So when my hubby came home that night I told him: Honey, if the sheriff comes by tonight and asks you about attacking your wife, I’ll tell him it wasn’t you! I’m sure the neighbors wondered what the heck was going on in there!

The jar is fantastic! You do the best displays! I just painted a big white sign for a friend, Farm Fresh Eggs, and I painted the wildest rooster on the end of it. Hope she likes it.

  14. Hi Brenda! My grandson Parker who is 14 has many chickens and roosters..he gets a good dozen fresh eggs every morning and loves taking care of them..his dad is building him a big barn now(hired guys to build it) and will buy him a cow and a pig…he is my outdoors boy and loves to hunt too…Jacob my other grandson loves the computor buying and selling…I love your jar idea..looks so nice!!! Love ya! Carol

  15. I love the little shredded paper you put in the bottom. You always think of every detail! Enjoy your day!

  16. What a cute Idea! Thanks for sharing.

  17. How cute! I love your memories of gathering eggs when you were younger. I absolutely adore my chickens and never want to live without them. I wish you could have chickens where you live!

  18. I hope you’ll someday have some chickens. My father had some a few years at his nursery and there’s just no comparison between a freshly laid egg and a grocery store one. I love your jar and I bet some of your readers who keep chickens will send you some feathers for the jar!

  19. I recognize your little girl picture as being from my favorite children’s illustrator, Eloise Wilkins. All her drawings are precious!

I loved your hen story! I am afraid of roosters, hens and all birds, so you sound very daring and adventurous! Your jar is precious!

Hey Brenda, I also have a rooster that pecks my legs as I try to get inside the coop. I have been raising for chickens for 5 years now and set up a chicken blog at http://www.kernschickens.com. It a site for new chicken owners who need help on raising backyard chickens.

  22. Simply adorable!

  23. Adorable! Well, you know I’m going to encourage you again to get perhaps three or four chickens. They are so darn easy to care for and you could probably find a used coop in the want ads or craigs list or something. I just love my chickens and you are right, the fresh eggs taste so much better than store bought.

  24. I used to love books illustrated by Eloise Wilkins. I had forgotten all about her. Your little chicken story is wonderful.

  25. I love farm fresh eggs…huge difference between them and supermarket eggs. Your memory in a jar is amazing! You are unbelievably creative.

  26. total cuteness….i love roosters/chickens….trying to convert my kitchen to barn red & butter yellow, love your decor. pam in texas

  27. Anything that surrounds us with good memories is a wonderful thing. So glad that this brought you back to such a nice time in your life.

  28. Check you city ordinances, you’d be surprised that many towns and cities allow up to 2 chickens per household as long as none are roosters.

  29. Of all the things you have created lately, this chicken creation is so precious.

Ouch…nothing hurts like being spurred by a rooster. I use to go hang out clothes and ours would get me (or try to) every time I was out back…I always took the broom out with me and when he would run at me, I would whack at him (or try to)…he was a beauty though!
I would love to have a few…but…my spouse says no. :(

  30. This is a very cute project, I love chickens too. Luckily I am allowed to keep them and I have a total of 18. They are all named and each one has his/her own sweet little personality. I might try to make one of these ‘Chicken Projects” :)

  31. This is so cute, Brenda! I love your memories in a jar :)

I think it would be so great to have chickens too. I bet they’d be so entertaining. We used to have two ducks and they were the funniest things…I couldn’t believe how different their personalities were. Hope you’re having a nice week!

  32. Brenda, I love your little roosters in the jar. You are braver than me…don’t think I’d like facing a mean ole rooster each day. Your longing to live where you can have chickens made me think of P. Allen Smith’s home and backyard garden with his chicken’s running all around. I thought that would be sooo much fun…to garden with the chickens. :)

  34. What a cute chicken story! I only have ceramic chickens! But they are pretty cute- found your blog and love it! New follower and I linked up !!

  35. Cute project Brenda! My grandparents had chickens but I never had to do anything with them. I have vivid memories of what happened before we had chicken for dinner!

  36. How Cute! I am so glad to be back reading your blog! I have gone to email reading and have missed some of my favs! Such a cute jar!
