Java Talk WednesdayTopics For Discussion

Discussions for tomorrow's Java talk:

1. Did you watch The Blacklist Monday night? Did you figure out any more of the mystery surrounding the show? Or think you may have? Thoughts?

2. What other TV shows do you like to watch at night?

3. When you aren't watching TV in the evening, what do you like to do? Read? Be online? Sew or crochet? I'd like to hear your night's routine, if you have one. (G-rated please)

4. Speaking of reading, read any great books lately? Please share.

5. Who are your favorite authors to read? What is it about them that brings you back again and again to their work?

Okay, that should give everyone something to discuss. I'll put this up in the morning after I take poor Charlie Ross in to be anesthetized to have his teeth cleaned, and some removed.

I will appreciate your company while I am here worrying over my baby. I hope the loss of some of his front teeth won't worsen his self-confidence. As it is, Abi lords it over him and bosses him around terribly. And she has big teeth she can sink into the poor boy.

I'm constantly reprimanding her to leave him alone.

  1. Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, Sherlock (PBS) are a must watch for me. Call the Midwife will soon be starting the new season, while Downton Abbey just ended. :(

    I am re-reading a James Patterson book - 'Sam's letters to Jennifer'.

I am between crafts - going to start a soft yellow crocheted baby blanket soon. I am also in the middle of painting every inside door in our home - a slow going process for me.

Waiting for Spring to arrive so I can get out and work in my yard! And...I saw our first Robin today!! :)

I hope Charlie Ross feels better soon. Those dental visits at the Vet's office are always exhausting for them...and us. Our two have also lost several teeth. I brush and brush and the little dickens still have horrible teeth!!! Plus...their behavior is just awful when I try to brush their takes two of us to hold them down to get it done.

Take care!! Have a good week there in Oklahoma!! It was a dreary day here in Lubbock -

  2. Definitely watched The Blacklist last night. So good. Also love Elementary and Person of Interest. I try to work on hand sewing while watching tv. Sometimes will make a wreath or something at the table while arching.
    Totally watch too much television

  3. I have only been newly single and living on my own for 10 months now and I do enjoy it for the most part. I do have a routine. I usually always watch the Blacklist on Tuesdays because I DVR it. I go to bed early at 9:30. Lately, I have watched 3 seasons of Downton Abbey and I am on the 4th now. I went to my local library and rented them. I could write a book on how much I love Downton Abbey. I eat pretty late at night, usually around 830. Bagel and cream cheese or a Lean Quisine. I don't cook much, but I do like to bake the no knead artisian bread. I do that twice a month for my office. I am quilting. I have dabbled here and there in the past, but I am really quilting now. Working on my first "real" quilt. It is a scrap quilt, nothing lined up, so no fancy flying geese or day though. Lots of pressing with the iron. My little wiener dog, Rosie is always right by my side. I sew on the coffee table in front of the TV. This weekend, I intend to start some flower seeds...heavens, it has been 73 here! One inch of rain is predicted for Friday and Saturday. We need it so very badly. I learned how to mow my own lawn too, not a big fan of it...but I perhaps will stick with it if I want to save 60.00 a month from paying a gardener...Not sure I want to lug around a mower on 1/4 acre on 100 degree days...And the final thing before I go to bed....I watch the first 20 minutes of Kelly and Michael (DVR) It makes me happy...I try never to read or watch something right before I go to bed that will keep me up forever...dwelling and thinking.

  4. Hi Brenda - our fave weeknight comedy is The Goldbergs (hilarious) on Tuesday nights. It wasn't on tonight though - bummed. Mike & Molly we love to see on Monday nights (we are sit-com family) Love catching up on blogs while we are all sitting in the family room. (we DVR Judge Judy and catch up on the weekends) We'll Be thinking about your fur-baby. Don't worry - they don't really mind less teeth. Our little terrior is the toothless-wonder around here.

  5. One of our pugs had 18 teeth removed last year, and another tooth this year...they take awhile to sleep off the anesthesia, but they don't seem to mind missing teeth at all...she still gobbles her dry food right up! And usually they have better breath and seem to feel better afterwards, too!

  6. Good morning, Brenda! I love the Blacklist and wouldn't dream of missing an episode. NCIS and Person of Interest are interesting, also. I used to do needle crafts before I got arthritis. Nowadays, I will spend my evenings with my kitty in my lap, reading or being online. I enjoy researching topics that interest me. Bedtime is early, 8:30 or 9:00, as the cat wakes me up exactly at 4:00 to be fed. This is my favorite time of day, watching the world wake up.

I think Kate Morton is a good storyteller and I'll read anything by her.

I feel bad you and your pupsters are going through this ordeal. Thinking of you and hoping all goes well today...

  7. Hi Brenda! Love the Blacklist!! James Spader is wonderful, I've watched him for at least thirty years.
Anyone else having trouble "believing" Lizzie's marriage? It just doesn't ring true to me. Seems like there is so much going on in the show that I'm not getting why this husband is needed. It just seems like a weird relationship. Susan

  8. Ok we are hanging out with you at the vet's.
I don't have cable TV anymore but I rarely watched shows...mostly movies. So I either rent a movie here and there from the Red Box down the road at the grocery store, or I purchase movies / series. For the most part, I purchase BBC series such as Lark Rise to Candleford, Call the Midwife, Wives & Daughters, Downton Abbey, ( when you preorder new ones like Downton there is a very good discount ) etc. because they are so good that they can be watched several times. When I first cut out cable, I went to Walmart and bought a Waltons TV series set...I'd loved that show and it was so much fun to watch it again. So around 7 or 7:30, I am on the couch with dinner watching something old-fashioned or historical, if it pertains to something that I purchased. An adventure movie, or disaster movie, or sci-fi...that is what I might rent from the Red Box because generally those are movies that are good for one viewing only. The Red Box is 1.99 and come to think of it I don't use it very often. For the kids, if I have a long baby sitting session, I will get a freebie from the little library down the street.

That's the winter...come summertime, I'll be out on the front porch reading or working on a quilt. Reason is my eyesight requires natural light or an Ott Light now...and that is why I think that I tend to watch movies more on a winter's evening than read, but in the summer I prefer reading. I used to read I think I put more of that time into sewing since I took it up again about a year and a half ago. And then too...rather than going through a purchased magazine from the store, I read it is just a different medium :)

Hang in there at the vets, Brenda. Hope everything turns out just fine for you and the pupsters! :)

  9. I love this idea!!!! I will be anxiously waiting for what topics will be discussed. I watch Antiques Roadshow on Monday nights. I watch Doc Martin on Saturday nights and Downton Abbey on Sunday nights. If nothing appeals to me other nights, I sit and catch up on magazines, newspapers, books and computer stuff. I am reading several books now. The Hit and Hummingbird. Great idea, coffee hour!!!

  10. I watch no TV but for one thing. The Walking Dead! And it isn't for everyone but I love it!

  11. I am not sure if I should reply until tomorrow. I usually watch TCM, PBS or "The Big Bang Theory".
I love English sitcoms. I am always working on a charity quilt for my church, cross stitching, knitting or reading. Currently reading "The End of Your Life Book Club" and your choice for March "Still Life with Bread Crumbs". I also and shouldn't but I enjoy playing Solitaire on the computer. Thankful for the life I have.

  12. I can't seem to keep up with any kind of series on TV. I can watch a sitcom though because I don't need to keep up as much. Big Bang Theory is a favorite. Books are another story. Currently reading "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson. This is the third book I've read by him so I guess I like him.

  13. We don't watch a whole lot of T.V. We have never had cable, but used to pick up our local channel and PBS. Now that is not available. We have a very small little flat screen that we watch a movie on from time to time. Mostly in the evenings my husband reads and I am usually working on a project, while listening to classical or praise music. Right now my project is a cross stitch pillow top and I am also crocheting some baby blankets. Both my boys and their wives are expecting babies. That will make 7 grandkids for us!
I enjoy listening to books on tape that I download from our library. It is so nice to be able to do that! I listen mostly through the day while I am cooking or cleaning. I am listening to Sabrina by Lori Wick. I also have a book on my Nook that I am reading as well. It is called Zenith 2016 and is a pretty heavy read about end time prophecy. I listen for pleasure, but when I read it is either the Bible or something that will help me to grow in my walk with the Lord.
We also have amazon prime so we can watch a show from time to time on the computer. It is in our kitchen so once in while we will watch something while we eat. Not so many good movies on there, but lots of older TV series etc.
Try not to feel to anxious about your baby! I know it is hard. I had to take my sweet Sophie in for an abscess on her cheek last month. She was in most of the day and I really missed her. She is my little shadow and keeps me company through out the day.

  14. I hardly watch tv anymore. I did of course do my patriotic duty and watch the Canadian men and women's team win Olympic gold. YAY!!!! I mostly watch videos online, shows like Disappeared or Dateline Real life mysteries. No commercials that way. I do have the Poirot series that I watch here and there.

As far as reading goes, I am a huge Agatha Christie fan. I have almost all 81 of her books. I read them over and over. As there are so many books, by the time I read them the second time, I usually don't remember the whole story. I also love books by both Philip Yancey and Max Lucado. Yancey's book "What's so Amazing about Grace" is my all time favourite book. I have read it 20+ times and always glean something new. Aside from that, I read the Bible and my Country Sampler magazines :)

  15. Blacklist!!! Oh, goodness. What a show. James Spader is amazing. It is one of those shows I find I have to put the computer down, not flip through a magazine, basically do nothing but watch because of the pace. This past week was interesting when he was telling the *evil woman* about his family tragedy. So, was it true or another of his lies? Where does Lizzie fit in to his life? What is up w/ the hubs and is that woman he keeps crossing paths with another *evil woman*, not 'just' a home wrecker? I don't get the relationship w/ her husband at all. She is so strong, so I don't understand how or why she keeps wavering in that relationship. The show certainly draws us in each week so that you can't wait til next Monday!! I can't even IMAGINE what the end of the season episode will be like to keep us guessing all summer. Will also miss Downton now that the very short season is over. Was much happier with the end of Season 4 than I was with Season 3. But such a LONG TIME to wait until next January to see it again. I also love to read. I don't enjoy reading mysteries as so many do, and have never been a fan. I loved Olive Kitteridge and just finished another of Elizabeth Strout's books, The Burgess Boys. Also really good. So many books... so little time. Your Wed. Coffee Hour is really fun, Brenda!! Have a great day!

  16. I don't watch much tv, so my evenings are usually spent reading the news or blogs or looking at Pinterest on my computer. I haven't picked up a book to read lately and I do love to read but can't think of any one particular author at the moment. My reading is pretty eclectic.

  17. My night time relaxation varies from reading, watching TV, to surfing. My puppy P.B. is about three years old. When I got him from rescue he had lost one front tooth. He looks like a permanent first grader to me. I taught first graders to read for many years. Each student has a reading problem that was like a puzzle to be solved.

  18. I love these posts, Brenda! It's fun to read the comments. All of us are so much alike! First of all, I am sending many prayers across the miles for Charlie Ross. Please let us know how he does. You know that Milo needs the same thing done...very scary.

I wish I could say I watch TV. And I have intentions of getting back into it. The problem is my hearing is 80% gone, and I'm not very good with dialogue at all, even with hearing aids. Closed caption works very well, but I have to say, reading blogs, etc. everyday, curling up with a book or magazine as I like to do, and then having to READ the TV as well, well, you can see what a headache I end up with. But there are so many great shows on and I'm missing some of the best. In the past I have loved legal and crime shows, and situation comedies. We have Netflix but I don't think I've seen more than three movies in the last year. This angers me a bit, I don't know where my time goes.

I am in the middle of reading some magazines and catalogs I have piled up. I read about 4-5 books a month and then take a break with magazines to clear my head! I can't pinpoint what I like to read, I usually see reviews on newer books and then go from there.

    Keep us posted on Charlie!

  19. I watch The Following and Blacklist on the same night. Sometimes makes for nightmares. I do believe the "Christmas" story had some truth to it and is what turned him to a life of crime. Downton Abbey is one I don't miss either. I love reading the Jo Nesbo books which are somewhat like the Following and Blacklist.

  20. I hope Charlie Ross is okay. Isn't it funny how much we do for our pets? We have 2 pit bulls and 2 cats - all rescued. I love to watch NCIS with Mark Harmon, Mike & Molly and the Big Bang Theory. Everything else - not too much. I do watch the Barefoot Contessa and some decorating shows on HGTV. I am retired now and spend a lot of time cooking. I have finally convinced my hubby that we should fix up our house and sell it. I want to go somewhere quieter and less populated. I love your blog and wait each morning for you to post.

  21. I would rather read than watch television. My favorite author is Curtiss Ann Matlock. She has written a series of books that take place in Valentine, OK. She writes with humor and bring us characters who live long after we've closed the book.If home is where the heart is, then the town of Valentine is the perfect place to live.
I also would like to share with you that I lost my best friend of 13 years today. Her name was Christy Ann. She was a Shelti and one of the best dogs I have ever known.

  22. My Yorkie has had several of her teeth pulled. She has a non-stop appetite. I swear she swallows her dry food whole as she eats so fast. It has helped so much with her eye problems have those teeth pulled. She had two teeth cleaning/pulling surgeries. She bounced back just fine.
As far as evening husband gets home late every night from work. I also don't get home 3 days a week til 6 p.m. We have a couple shows that we watch but really not any series. My husband likes some shows that I won't watch.
I have a hard time falling asleep at night. I am trying hard to follow all the tips that I read. Lately I will go to bed and read on my Kindle for while. It doesn't help. I used to read a lot of magazines but most of my favorite are out of print now.
So, it's pretty boring here in the evenings, hah.
Hoping your baby does okay with less teeth.

  23. We have 2 little Chihuahuas, both of whom eat at a frenzied pace! I feed all my critters in different rooms so they don't feel pressured by their siblings. Also, I was able to find a dry food that was sort of a flat oval shape - too big for them to swallow whole (but not as big as regular dental kibble ), and they have to chew - better for their teeth. Also, the fancy bowls with a lump in the middle so they have to chase the food around a bit slows them down. I use a couple of lovely glass lemon or orange squeezers from the thrift store - prettier than the expensive dog bowls, and they do slow down a bit while eating! My older Chi has had some teeth pulled and he rebounded just fine! Hope your Charlie Ross recovers just as quickly!
