Let's Talk Java

Okay, let's talk coffee. Are you having yours right now? What color is the mug? Mine is red. As you can see in this pic.

There's been a little change up here. I dug around last week and found my old Cuisinart and it still worked. There are cold mornings when I want two cups of coffee. And though I get pretty good prices for my Keurig K cups, I just can't hardly make myself have two in one day.

The rest of the set up is the same here in the kitchen. Of course I love coffee so much I also have one on a repurposed potting bench in the dining room!

I have tried a lot of brands. For the Keurig K cups, probably my favorite is good old Folgers. I can get those pretty cheap too.

For the Cuisinart, I really like Dunkin' Donuts. I get mine already ground. I don't have a grinder. All I need is one more thing to put somewhere.

I didn't start drinking coffee until my thirties. Then I stopped for some time and took it up again about oh, ten years ago. I really like coffee when I have breakfast out. But I've only done that once since moving to Tulsa, so I'm a home coffee drinker.

I had a really great friend who's passed on now, and she use to smoke. Back in the day of course when it was popular to ask a man to light one for you. Never having been a smoker (oh, I tried some. Didn't like the taste), I asked her what she loved so much about smoking.

She told me it really wasn't the actual smoking as much as it was the ritual of it.

Well, I have a ritual of getting up, doing yoga stretching for about 20 minutes, then my shower. Then I go sit in the living room where one of my laptops is, the one I work on most, and have my cereal. With fruit if I have any. Then I get up and make myself some coffee.

Oh my, do I love the smell of that while it's brewing! I remember when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, I couldn't go down the street that had the McDonalds on it, because the smell of coffee wafted out to the street and made me sick to my stomach. Not much got to me but coffee.

I love to work online, sip, read some emails, sip, and so on.

I take my coffee with one Splenda, a bit of half and half and some vanilla flavored coffee mate. Give her a stir and off to the living room I go. The dogs snuggle in with me and my day gets off to its coffee drinking start.

I rarely if ever drink any in the afternoon. Haven't all this year. I'm pretty much strictly a morning coffee drinker.

All right, I've prattled on enough. Your coffee probably needs topped off. Tell me about you and your coffee. And feel free to comment on the comments.

  1. I love your coffee bar, Brenda...makes me want to drop by for a cup! I just have a little corner of the countertop (you can see it on my blog today). I have a Cuisinart Grind and Brew...grinds the beans and brews the coffee. I love the smell of fresh ground coffee...it's one of my simple pleasures. I usually use Sam's Club Daily Chef Breakfast Blend 100% Arabica...and I like to add a healthy dose of 1/2 and 1/2. I use BIG coffee mugs and usually have 2 a day, sometimes substituting tea for the second cup. It would be a fun linky party to link up all things coffee sometime...

  2. Good morning Brenda. I've been following your blog for some time & have never commented, but I am a coffee lover from OK too.
I started drinking coffee habitually when we moved next door to my parents. It was a great way to start the day visiting with them.
I love good ole Folgers (inherited)!!!
My favorite cup has a beautiful rooster on it.
I have a GE coffee maker, but my favorite was a Mr. Coffee cup at a time dispenser.
Glad to know others like their morning cup like I do.
    I really enjoy your blog!

  3. I love my morning coffee! I started drinking coffee back in the 70's when I worked in an office and it smelled so good brewing! I use K-cups and like them but might be like you and have to add back my small pot for a two cup morning. I love a good French Roast and right now my favorite is from Trader Joe's. I use one truvia packet and French Vanilla creamer (International Delight brand only) or half and half. I only drink coffee in the morning as I'm very sensitive to caffeine! Love your coffee bar and I'm going to make one myself. I use a different coffee mug each day. I love mugs and have a large collection. I too drink my first cup while I check emails and blog posts online! Its how I start my day! This was fun Brenda!

    1. We don't have a Trader Joes. But lots of bloggers talk about how great they are. I use to drink my coffee at my desk top, but Charlie Ross loves to snuggle next to me on a small quilt in my recliner. And as you know, the pupsters are the boss!

  4. Coffee upsets my tummy, but I want to get in on the fun! I drink hot chocolate in the winter and Pepsi/Coke in the summer. My ritual is the same as any coffee drinkers is. I start my day with a hot chocolate/coke right after I rise. My cat snuggles with me as I enjoy my beverage. My favorite mug is a Rainbow Row, Charleston, S.C. souvenir. It's so colorful. I do adore the smell of brewing coffee! I'm really enjoying reading everybody's answers!

  5. Gotta have my coffee first thing in the morning. I drink a half de-caf mix that I use with Dunkin' Donuts and mix with some kind of specialty flavored coffee. Hazelnut, caramel...something like that. I have a Cuisinart drip right now, we had a Bunn but with hard water the reservoir is hard to keep clean. I have a big Cappuccino mug from Pfaltzgraff that is my go-to each day, so I usually fill it a couple of times, and I use a sugar free creamer from Coffee-mate. I also use Splenda, so I'm definitely all about a creamy flavor. I'm not into Starbucks for their coffee, it's too strong for me. I like a cup of hot tea in the afternoon, so coffee is my way to start the day. It's fun hearing about everyone's coffee routine!

  6. Hi Brenda, I like to start my day with a cup of decaf Lipton tea. I use good old sugar and low fat skim milk in my tea. I have cereal and sometimes a piece of fruit, like an orange..
I have my lunch around noon and that is when I like to have my only cup of coffee.. I like Folgers and Green Mountain morning blend in my red Keurig. I drink only one cup a day. I use sugar and splash of half and half. . I didn't start drinking coffee until last year and I just turned 73. It used to make me dizzy and sick in my stomach.. I guess my "bod" has changed over the years..
My favorite mug is one that I found at Goodwill. It is white with good sized yellow pears on the sides and a small blue pattern of different fruit around the top. I like the feel of it in my hand. It has Evandale stoneware-hand painted (made in China) on the bottom. I found only one of the mugs but I loved it at first sight.. Hopefully, some day, I can find at least three more of the mugs. I have red ones too that I like very much.
My kitties don't snuggle with me but they do start their play routine that time of the morning.. I'm feeding the birds and squirrels in my yard and Sheldon and Pippa love to watch them.
I needed to go to the grocery store this morning.. I got dressed and even washed my hair.. Got in my van and the battery was dead.. I guess I'll wait until my son gets home and see if he can "jump start" it for me.. Not a good way to start the day.
Otherwise the sun is shining and it's not too cold.. No snow either, although there is still some in my yard.
    Wishing you a happy day.

    1. I too choose a mug on the way it feels in my hand. If it feels awkward in any way, I won't use it. The other day I washed a mug that is on a shelf above my stove. It had dried and I got it out of the dish drainer to put it back up and the handle just broke and fell off. Weird. I guess our routines are what grounds us and makes our day special. Sorry about your battery.

    2. I haven't been reading Brenda's blog for very long, so I didn't know....Happy Birthday, Brenda! Celebrate every birthday you get, lots of people don't get their full share of them, is my belief. And once you are over 50 you get to celebrate for a full month!
I began drinking coffee at 18 when I started working and would take coffee breaks with the other women in the office. They all smoked and drank coffee. I couldn't stand cigarettes and could barely stand coffee, but I learned. I love your little coffee area, no room in my kitchen. I'm not very particular about the brand but it has to be decaf I'm too wired all on my own!

  8. OH no, it's Brenda's Birthday and I forgot! Happy Birthday wishes coming your way to one of the sweetest women I know. Today you deserve a special cup of coffee! We use Yuban Dark Roast here. We love strong coffee. I've been drinking coffee as long as I can remember. My mom used to give me a small cup when I was young and totally doctored it up with cream and sugar. To this day I still drink it with lots of creamer and a sweetner. I love the first cup out of the coffee pot, it is the best! I use a Longaberger mug, it fits my hand just the way I like. I have other mugs that hang on a rack over my coffee pot, so I do alternate depending on my mood. Occasionally I'll share a French Press coffee with my daughter later in the day. Enjoy your day!

  9. Happy birthday, Brenda! I have a Cuisinart K-Cup brewer at home and my favorite coffee is Starbuck's French Roast, but I usually only buy it if I have a coupon. I like my coffee strong, and I use creamer only, and none of those flavored ones because they have some kind of sweetener in them. I don't like sweet coffee. I usually have once cup at home, and another when I get to the office. I have a red Keurig coffee maker, like yours, in my office. I have Corelle blue mugs that I primarily use at home. At my office I have a mug with my name on in that has moved with me from job to job for more than 25 years. Since it has my name on it, nobody in the office can forget that it's mine!

  10. I sure enjoyed your post today (and Happy Birthday!!!) and am an A.M. coffee drinker. I started drinking coffee in the '70's when our school turned down the heat to save money. My hands got sooooo cold that I would grab a cup around 9:00 a.m. just to improve my circulation. It's funny how fast that ritual became a habit.
We drink Maxwell House coffee but I add either Hazelnut or Almond Joy flavored creamer and lots of milk. When people look at the amount of cream/milk I add to my coffee I just comment, "I thought that was what half-n-half was all about!"
I have a mug from Davis Kidd Bookstore (no longer in business in Green Hills) of Nashville, TN which was a gift from my sister-in-law. It's as smooth as a stone and I love the way it feels in my hand. I put so much milk and creamer in my coffee that I have to re-heat in the microwave!
I love Pilot (gas station) coffee and they have a microwave to heat up my milked-down java. I also love Dunkin 'Donut coffee but it is not readily available where we live. I met a gentleman in one of five coffee shops in a small town in which our son lives in the Seattle area. He was ordering coffee and I mentioned that I often get a cup at our gas station. He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye and commented, "Oh…we don't call that coffee!!!"

    1. Wonder why he said that? Dunkin Donut coffee is readily available here and I got some for $6.95 last week. That beats the ten and eleven dollars of the rest of them! It just happened to be on sale. I figure if policemen eat donuts and drink coffee, then Dunkin Donuts has to know their coffee!

  12. I was a loyal Caribou Daybreak K-cup drinker until about 3 months ago. They have clearly changed their coffee and it's awful now. I had to do some trial and error and have settled on Gevalia Signature. I can get a decent price on Amazon. For second cups some days, I'll drink a Folgers or Maxwell House K-cup that I can get from the grocery store. I'm one of the few that hates Starbucks coffee. Always has a burnt taste to me. Good thing, because it's also too expensive. One place to get coffee out around my house is surprisingly at the McDonald's close to my house. I had to get some once when the power was out one morning. It is really delicious and a good price.

    2. Brenda - if you stop by McDonalds for a coffee tell them you'd like a senior coffee and enjoy the discount. On my morning commute to Tulsa I'd drive through for a senior coffee with three creams and it would be juuuuust right and last all the way to Catoosa.

  13. I couldn't agree more about enjoying the ritual of coffee drinking in the morning! I think it's a nice slow way to wake up and ease into your day. I have a Cuisinart coffee maker like you and use Starbucks Decaf House Blend. I don't need any caffeine (since I'm the nervous type) and I add a tsp of real sugar and some Coffee Mate liquid creamer. I don't like the flavored creamers. I usually drink 2 cups every morning unless I have to go somewhere early.

  14. I love my coffee first thing in the morning. And lots of it! My family knows they should never get between me and my 20 year old BUNN coffee maker, before I have my first cup. They don't speak to me, before that either. ;-) My old BUNN was my parent's coffeemaker, before they passed and it still worked, so I brought it home. I drink a lot of coffee, in the morning, but have recently decided to cut back to just two cups. I take my coffee with splenda and milk. Been drinking it that way for 40 years, now. I love your coffee bar and those mugs are adorable!

  16. I started drinking milk with coffee in it at age 4. My dad was the Maryland Club coffee salesman for North Texas and our garage was also the warehouse! Cases of whole bean and ground coffee were stacked floor to ceiling. Once a week or so, a huge Central delivery truck arrived and filled the garage, with my mom checking off the inventory list. What an aroma our garage had! My dad is 88 and a half, and still drinks regular coffee all day. I have a coffee station with a regular maker and a Keurig at our lake home, and a regular one at home.

    Happy birthday, Brenda!

I was exclusively a tea drinker until about two years ago. With the stress of moving and needing the boost, I started drinking coffee, but I don't drink coffee if my spouse is not here. I drink it with ice and sugar-free vanilla syrup. Ikea's dark roast is our favorite, because it is inexpensive, but strong. We keep our Mr. Coffee at our coffee bar in the laundry area of the sleeping porch, because we don't want to use valuable counter space in our small kitchen. It is the smallest model and it works fine. We had a fancier brand name, but it broke down in a year.

  19. Happy Birthday Brenda! I enjoy reading your blog so much. Coffee is not appealing to me at all! I've never liked it. My mother used to tell me I'd learn to like it one day! Not so far--I'm a tea drinker. I make a pot every morning and sip on it all day. In the winter I reheat it in my favorite mug and in the summer I drink one mug of hot tea and then have iced tea the rest of the day. I have a tea station very similar to your coffee station. My husband is a huge coffee fan and makes a pot for himself in the morning and makes a capuccino in the afternoon. Enjoy your birthday! ♥

  20. Happy Birthday Brenda,
I love the idea of the Java Talk. I started drinking coffee back in the late 80's when I had to be at work by 6 AM. It was so early I needed a pick me up. I have been drinking coffee since. I used to drink it black, but my stomach started objecting to that so I use milk. I don't like powdered creamers. Occasionally I will drink flavored coffee, but most of the time I prefer mine with just milk and never any sugar. I have a Hamilton Beach coffee station that holds the coffee in a tank and you just push the lever and fill your coffee cup. I take a mug and a thermos of coffee to work with me every day. I do love my coffee. I can drink it any time of day and it doesn't bother me or keep me from sleeping. I drink many brands of coffee, but do prefer 8 o'clock regular roast. I mostly buy mine already ground although I do have a grinder. I just like the convenience of the already ground. I am nor really a fan of the K-cups. They taste too much like instant coffee to me. I also like tea and often drink tea with milk in the evenings.
The ritual of coffee drinking is certainly a cozy way to start the day. That is the first place I head when I get up in the morning.

    1. I don't care for the powdered creamers either. I've gotten flavored coffees, but then don't ever seem to like them. I have tried the 8 o'clock and I liked it too. I can't drink coffee or anything with caffeine after about 2 p.m. I'd be wired all night.

  21. I drink my coffee black. If I add creamer it sours on my stomach. Since I like it black, I like the lighter blends: Green Mountain Breakfast and Wolfgang Puck Breakfast in Bed K cups. If I make a whole pot in my Mr. Coffee I use Target's Archer Farms Kona.
I didn't start drinking coffee until I went back to school in my mid twenties after my husband died. Like you the smell made me nauseous when I was pregnant.
I usually try to stop at one cup a day. I drink tea, but instead of using the K cups, I just put my sugar and tea bag in a cup and use the Keurig for hot water. If it is plain tea, I like to add half and half. I do not add it to flavored teas. My cups are blue and white.

  22. Happy Birthday Brenda! Oh, we're having fun now...if we just had a big birthday cake to go with a good cup of coffee, our visit would be perfect! I hope you're having some treats today my friend! And yes...I'm a connoisseur of fine coffee! We buy coffee beans...some free trade, some 8 O'Clock and mix it about half with decaf. (we order our coffee beans from Amazon) Then my hubby grinds the beans for fresh coffee. We have one cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. For a treat we get special coffee beans at Fresh market to add a little flavor. I change my cup up and right now I'm using a black mug with red inside. I started drinking coffee when I was in my 40s and moved to the mountains of NC. I can' live without it....and a touch of half and half! We have a Cuisinart, too and love it! We have one here and one at our condo in NC. We're serious about our coffee! Enjoy your day my friend! Wish you were here! Sweet hugs!

  23. I love coffee and prefer it strong and black. I have my Cuisinart I use Yuban. I also have the Keurig which I like to use at night when I feel like a cup of coffee I usually have a french roast the other coffees taste a bit watered down.

I have a weakness for coffee cups. I have over 100 of the Starbucks mugs, I have them arranged by season. If I see cups l like I buy them and just rotate them in with my Starbucks.

The only time I stopped drinking coffee was when I was pregnant I completely lost the taste for coffee.

  28. I am a coffee wuss...don't like it strong so my favorite is basic Folgers coffee...the mildest blend...Breakfast Blend or Country Roast. Unlike Brenda, I want it first thing...so I prepare it the night before and the routine is always the same. Push the coffee button at the same time that I am letting the dogs out first thing in the morning.
I drink coffee out of a Corelle cup...the same blue and white Corelle that I've had since an early married so that makes my cups VINTAGE :) I have at least 3 cups one after the other and that's about it. I can't drink coffee later in the morning or I won't be able to sleep later. Lately with all of the cold weather I crave tea in the late afternoon but just decaf tea...my son got me a Keurig for Xmas and I did order some more Kcups but stuck to decaf tea and coffee for the re-order. And don't tell HIM but honestly it is easier to just zap hot water in the microwave and stick a tea bag in it the old-fashioned way / if he's here I use the Keurig :) Recently the grocery store had a big Folgers Coffee for 4.99! That was great / best sale that they've had for awhile on it. I always stock up one ahead when there is a nice sale like that.

  31. Happy birthday, Brenda! today is my husband's birthday too. A special day for two very special people!

When I was young, my parents would make a pot of weak coffee in a percolator. If you drank it right after it brewed, it looked like dirty water. But they'd leave it plugged in for hours, until it smelled burnt and looked like motor oil. I had no desire to try it. So I drank hot tea until around age 26 when I got married. My first husband had a little Mr. Coffee drip coffeemaker, and would drink one cup of coffee each morning, with a splash of skim milk. Since he only made one cup and drank it right then, it didn't have time to get that nasty look and smell. I decided to try it the way he drank it, and discovered I liked it. (Even if a marriage ends in divorce, there's something good to take away from it, like a love of coffee.)

My favorite way to make coffee is in a vintage percolator -- just making sure I unplug it and drink it right away -- because an old percolator looks good on the counter, and it's fun to listen to it burble and watch the coffee go up into the little glass bulb on top. And it makes really hot coffee. I've found percolators at yard sales and flea markets. But, over time, the old percolators finally wear out. My most recent one tuckered out last month. So, right now I am using a little four-cup Mr. Coffee that I found at a flea market for $2. It is cute and small, and doesn't take up much space in our little kitchen.

We use Folger's coffee, make it pretty strong, and use just a bit of skim milk. We also have conditioned ourselves to drink it black. That's because we once went on a fishing trip with my husband's brother, and watched him get very agitated when there was no half-and-half available for his coffee when we stopped at a general store. We decided we didn't want to ever get that disappointed over a cup of coffee. We figure if we can drink it black, we can handle any situation.

Well, almost any situation. We've actually gotten up really early and headed off for a cup of McDonald's coffee while visiting my mother. She now uses a drip coffee maker instead of a percolator, but she still makes it weak, then lets it sit there stewing all day.

We have a collection of mugs, and my husband's only request is that they have a big handle. I like to pick out interesting graphics. I prefer a mismatched bunch with a similar theme rather than a matching set. All winter we've been using a collection of snowman cups that I've picked up for 25 cents to 50 cents apiece at thrift stores. I'm very particular about those snowmen -- they can't look creepy or scary. A lot of them fall in that category! They have to be cute, happy snowmen.

We only have a cup or two of coffee in the morning, and then later in the day we have some herbal tea if we want something hot. We like different flavors of herbal tea, but mostly drink mint or chamomile. My husband also loves Ovaltine, hot or cold.

  32. I am terrible for coffee and have what can only be described as a bucket to drink out of at work! During the day my extra large coffee mug is filled with black strong coffee which I sip when it is cold. As soon as it is gone, another one is made. At home though I drink it with milk and sugar and if out at a coffee house I have latte. As long as it is full of caffeine it's alright with me. My large mug (bucket) at work has a folk art angel on, and I go mad if I know that someone has drunk from it! xx

  33. All of my friends are tea drinkers, Brenda, but I'm a true blue coffee lover. My girls chipped in and gave hubby and I a Keurig for Christmas. I started out with the coffees, and then my daughter bought some Chai Latte K-cups while she was visiting. Well, I became hooked on those. I now prefer them to the coffee! But when I do drink the coffee it's usually with a packet of Stevia or Truvia and a bit of French Vanilla Coffee Mate!

  34. Happy Birthday, Brenda!! I hope your day has been a good one. Ok, coffee...I love coffee as long as it tastes like ice cream. Coffee with sugar and creamer. I prefer it cold most of the time. I also like to have a cup of hot coffee when we have breakfast out. We have one of those old style diners here in town that makes the best breakfasts possible AND has good coffee. (& pie, but we will not get into that) I drink iced coffee in the morning and then a cup of hot tea around 4. There is always iced tea in the fridge. A small cup off coffee after a lingering dinner is nice as well. But I do not do that very often. I use a French press and grind my own beans, which I get at a local café that roasts their own. The mug has to feel right, and I do not like things to match, so the mugs here are a mish-mash. Flowers, cats, great thoughts, and a snowman are what grace the mugs in my cabinet. While I love the look of your coffee stations all of my stuff resides inside cabinets. When we have company stay over I will make a station of coffee/tea/cocoa for their use. There is always a tea kettle (Princess House-it makes the most horrid noise when it is hot. It sounds like it is hacking up a hairball.) waiting on the stove.
    Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

  35. First, I see that it is your birthday. Happy happy day. Now on to the coffee. I only drink decaf as I haven't consumed caffeine since my twenties. I drink Trader Joe's. Definitely my favorite and the price is right. I drink one cup with breakfast and then one cup in the middle of the afternoon. I'll probably give up the afternoon cup when the weather heats back up (soon I hope). xo Laura

  36. I would like to try Trader Joes, but we don't have one here. I wonder if you can order from there? Yes, I hope it is spring soon. It is actually warm today and I worked in the garden a bit after Judy took me to lunch and we drove around looking for cows. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it is so hard to find cows in a field around here.

  37. I usually only have coffee when I buy one from McDonalds on my way to work. My husband uses our keurig most. I do have a few kinds I like. There is a coffee chain in Canada called Timothys. I pick up a few of their k-cups here and there as they have yummy flavours.

I don't drink coffee everyday unless I am going to work. Work and coffee go hand in hand in my mind. I have a somewhat stressful job(work in 2 group homes with adults with developmental disabilites) and coffee helps sometimes :)

Coffee used to make me violently ill when I was pregnant but I eventually was able to stomach it again.

  39. Brenda - I didn't start drinking coffee (or even taste it) until I was about 40-41 years of age. I will be 59 tomorrow. To this day I am not what you would call a coffee drinker. I do not have a pot as I buy the "coffee singles" that come in a box of 19. The coffee is in a teabag and I heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes and 20 seconds, (ironically my birthday - 2/20 - ha!). Anyway, I started out drinking it with honey and milk, then just honey, and now I LOVE Safeway's brand (liquid) Salted Caramel creamer. I use 3-4 tablespoons (love sweets!). If you or any of your readers have not tried it, you owe it to yourself to try. It is out of this world. I am fortunate in that I can drink Mountain Dew (with all its caffeine), go right to bed and fall to sleep immediately, so I can drink coffee then, too.

I had a personal question for you. My husband and I are lower income. He is under the VA healthcare system so he is not involved with the STUPID healthcare system that everyone is FORCED to sign up with now. I, due to our lower income, am not required to sign up either. We had our taxes done, our tax person told us I was not required to sign up (H&R Block) and printed out a sheet showing I would not be penalized for not signing up. (The printout showed I would not be required to sign up or be penalized for the next three years.) If you are lower income, why are you required to sign up for and pay for healthcare? I don't understand that. Just curious.

    1. I'm not entirely sure. Except that way you are insured if there is a catastrophe and it doesn't end up being paid by the state. Which now, I'm not even sure they do anyway. But you do get tax credits if you are lower income. So it is six of one and half a dozen of the other, if you know what I mean. You're either going to pay higher taxes, or have health care. I hope you had a good experience with H&R Block. They messed me up for two years. Finally found a good accountant three doors down!

We always had a cup of coffee after dinner. In my old neighborhood we would sit outside- get coffee and donuts and enjoy our company and have no issues getting to sleep. Happy Belated Birthday!!
Oh, I used to love my coffee. Hubby and I would drink it all day long and into the night. Visitors to our home would comment that it smelled like Starbucks whenever they walked in.
Columbian has always been our preference and the Costco ground is excellent (and economical) for everyday drinking. The Cuisinart drip makes and keeps the coffee the hottest. We've tried just about every coffeemaker on the market!
Like you, I couldn't stomach it during pregnancy. Even the smell gagged me.
When I reached my late 40s, I began to suffer horribly with anxiety attacks. Heart palpitations and shaking mostly. It was actually the caffeine in my beloved coffee causing me grief! I was forced to give it up for several years but now I'm able to have decaf . It's just not the same, though.
I drink plain green tea mostly and the ritual has become quite enjoyable. My hubby still drinks coffee and oh, I love the aroma! Occasionally, I'll make myself a French Press or Pour-Over cup of the real stuff, knowing full well that I will pay for it later. Sometimes, you need a good cup of coffee with a piece of cake or pie. :)

  46. Most people won't believe this, but I started drinking coffee when I was two. I've drank it every single day of my life except when I was pregnant (first trimester) and/or needed a medical procedure which prohibited drinking anything in the morning. My parents drank coffee all the time.I never thought it odd that I drank coffee as a kid. People used to tell me it would stunt my growth (I'm 5'10). When I was 16, I stopped drinking it with sugar in it and just used milk. Now I drink Cafe du Monde from the French Market in Louisiana (it has chicory in it and it is DELICIOUS) and I drink it with half and half. On work mornings, I drink two large cups before I leave for work and on the weekends I usually drink a whole pot. I drink the coffee they have for work, but it's not as good. I love coffee with desserts and sweets. I can drink coffee at night and it doesn't keep me up. The downside is if I go too long with out coffee, I get a headache. I'm 60 and I've always been in perfect health with no ill effects from drinking so much coffee. I like hot and cold tea as well. Happy Birthday Brenda :-)

  48. Happy Birthday, Brenda! I get your post a day late in my email, so I am sending belated wishes!! I have to tell you.... I have seen your Coffee Stations for a while and I pondered figuring out how and where to have one off of my kitchen counter. On Tuesday I moved my Keurig to the baker's rack in the kitchen along w/ the spinner for my K-cups. I also have a glass container for my tea bags and a colorful Mary Engelbreit tin container of hot chocolate mix along with 2 mugs. I wanted to see if I would like it there. I really do, so the hubs is going to build me a more permanent shelving unit with some open shelves above. So, thank you for the inspiration!! I drink Green Mountain Half-Caf K-cups and usually just one cup per day. I have started to get rid of all of my smaller mugs and have larger ones now. I could buy a new mug every time I shop. So hard to resist. I drink my coffee black, but with all the new flavored creamers, I was thinking of trying one. I don't like flavored coffees, just too much for me. Great post, and, again, hope your birthday was a good one!!

  50. I started drinking daily morning coffee about three years ago and I love it. Previously I was a tea drinker. I had read somewhere that coffee stimulates the brain cells in females. Don't know if that claim has been substantiated, however, I had a supervisor who was a coffee drinker since time immemorial (at work, she drank two cups of Folger's per day from an oversize mug) and and she was truly a walking encyclopedia of Bankruptcy rules, laws, codes and regulations. She was not a J.D., however, in my experience she was as highly qualified as any barrister. That woman could keep up with the constant and daily changes of Federal and local laws. She was phenomenal. Well that inspired me to become a coffee drinker and I did find that my brain was more alert in the mornings at work (I am now retired) than in the times prior to my Java consumption. I drink Folger's dark blend with Stevia and a little milk. Love it. My all time favorite, though, is ROYAL CUP. This brand seems to be served largely in institutions and hotels and motels. It is available for online purchase and I remember that when I checked it out it seemed a bit too pricey for me. But, do you know what, I am going to go back to their website and treat myself to something I love. Cheers to Java. And Brenda Cheers to you. Keep on living a life makes a difference.

  51. Brenda, let me start off by wishing you a very happy birthday! Sounds like you had a fun celebration with Judy.
I make a big pot of coffee in our Cuisinart Grind & Brew using Costco's Kirkland brand of Starbucks. I mix the beans so it's 1/2 caff. I set the timer to go off at 3:45am so there is a hot pot waiting for my hubby when he gets up. He has 2 cups out of it and when I get up around 5ish, I pour myself a huge cup, it's the perfect temp. by then! I drink mine out of a thermal mug with a lid because I always have a lap full of our 2 dogs and if I don't use this mug, I end up wearing my coffee. I know I have an addiction because most days, after I finish off that original pot, I make myself a cup of Green Mountain Breakfast Blend, using the Keurig. Around 3:00 in the afternoon, I have either an iced coffee, using a Green Mountain Iced Coffee K-cup with a splash of 1/2 & 1/2 and a bit of Splenda or on cold days, I have a Pumpkin Spice K-cup with Pumpkin Spice creamer (wish they sold it year round!) and a Splenda. That's the only time I use any creamer or sweetener, I've always liked it just black. I started drinking coffee with my mom when I was in high school, the only times I haven't loved coffee is when I was pregnant with my 2 kids or when I've been really sick. LOVE the stuff! Fun post, thanks for doing this!

  53. I missed your birthday??! So sorry! Happy Birthday!

I didn't start drinking coffee until my 30's also, and like you, I usually am just a morning drinker.

I use a tassimo and the signature blend is what I prefer. I don't like my coffee too strong. One sugar and low fat milk does it for me, and I have to dive in right away. I wake up, warm up some water in the cup in the microwave to get it warm for two minutes. Then pour it out, get the coffee going while I make my bed. Then I take the coffee with my iPad to the couch while I catch up on my emails. That's typically how I start my day.

  54. Happy belated birthday! I hope this comment goes through. I've tried a couple of times. I adore both of your coffee bars. They are the cutest I've very seen! I started drinking coffee in my 30's and have tried many different coffee machines. I usually have 2 large mugs per day with a bit of Italian sweet cream. Even went through an expression phase when I bought an expression machine and machine and made Cappachino's (boy was that a lot of work). Then I experimented with grinding my own fresh coffee beans. Finally waited for a great sale at Kohl's and a 30% coupon plus Kohl's cash and splurged on a Keurig machine. Since hubby and I waited so long we bought the platinum K75. Love it! We also bought the filter so we could use our own coffee and tea rather than use k-cups all the time. In the summer I drink iced coffee. Coffee drinking is an indulgence and it's special Whe you have your favorite cup, and share the experience with a friend.

  57. During my first visit to my husband's home, I smelled a most familiar aroma. It was a smell I had not experienced since I was a child. It was a fresh pot of Luzianne coffee brewing. You see, I had never liked coffee except at my great-aunt's house. When I stayed with her overnight, she would offer me a cup of coffee. As a child, I didn't understand there were different flavors of coffee. But I did know that hers was the best, served up with plenty of sugar and a huge amount of Carnation evaporated milk. I never drank coffee at home with my parents because I thought it was awful. And then I meet this most amazing man and he is brewing this magical potion from my childhood. Luzianne coffee contains chicory which gives it a very unique smell and flavor. It is a common ingredient in French roast coffees especially enjoyed in New Orleans. Fast forward 15 years, we still enjoy our special coffee. And I enjoy my memories of happy times spent with my Aunt Suma.

I used to drink it with sugar, but I gave that up years ago, so now I add just a little nonfat milk. I like it on the dark side. I have a Cuisenart, but I only uyse my Keurig.
