The Blacklist: Just Who Is Jolene?

Lucy Brooks...or...Jolene Parker?

Click here to listen to the lyrics from the end of the show.

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jo-le-ne...
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can...

Heavens yes, I miss him when The Blacklist is not on Monday's lineup. I am quite taken with the acting of James Spader/Raymond (Red) Reddington. His acting is superb.

Cowboy, played by Lance Reddick, came into town in an old Cadillac and met with Red, who gave him orders to find out everything he could about Jolene.

My favorite line by Reddington on last night's episode: "Don't look so glum, Harold."

Harold did indeed look glum, didn't he?

Dianne Wiest smiled as she surrendered, after Red's cordial conversation with her. He said she had to know the jig was up once she let the man, an assistant U.S Attorney, go free. (He'd been missing for 12 years. Last night's show began with him wandering down a highway, obviously traumatized.)

But oh, the show is really steaming up now! I was on pins and needles when Tom, played by Ryan Eggold, slipped into Jolene's hotel room. We thought there was going to be yet another steamy scene between them, but Tom pushed away from her and announced that he loved his wife.

When he turned to go, she angrily said: "Wrong answer."

It was then that Tom changed from the "bespectacled school teacher/innocent man whose wife doesn't have time for him" to who he really is. And who, do you suppose, is he?

His manner and personality changed abruptly. Jolene (played by Rachel Brosnahan) looked a bit taken aback.

Just who is the auburn-haired flirtatious woman who plays up to Tom? Lucy Brooks? How does she figure into all this?

This is the real Tom...Watch The Video

Will this mean the end of Lizzie and Tom? It should. She will of course be heartbroken. But Red will be there for her.

And her handsome partner, Ressler, who seems to get horribly roughed up in each episode, might just be there to comfort her as well.

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jo-le-ne..
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
There's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, Jolene

And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me,
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me, Jolene
I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him even though you can
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can...

Reddington: "A war is coming..."

Watch out, Jolene/Lucy. Whoever you are. You're dealing with Raymond Reddington now. And he will show no mercy.

What do you think is about to happen? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Brenda, excellent summary of the show! I think Tom works for a crime organization, and he and Jolene (Lucy) will confront each other. I also think Liz finds out about 'the kissing' and confronts Tom. There will definitely be a cliffhanger as this show ends the season. I can't wait to find out what it is!

    1. Didn't Tom turn on a dime? Split personality between sweet accommodating school teacher to psycho-sociopath.

  2. Well, alas I don't watch this show. Can't get Mr. Precious off the Fox network! Sounds really good and I just may take the control and watch it. Wonder if it is on Netflix? I so remember that song "Jolene" sung by Dolly Parton! Now I just love Dianne Wies and looks like she has slimmed way down since the last time I saw her.
Good review because you've made me want to see it.
    Be a sweetie,

  3. yes a twist is coming for sure - I am really wondering what Tom is all about - why did he marry Lizzie and what is his "mission" because it very much looks like he is on one - some how he knew Red would contact Lizzie? and is after him through her? very interesting indeed now to see him switch from mr. nice guy to who he "really" is

    1. I believe he was told to be with her. He said: "I even married the woman."

  4. I'm totally lost (having never seen it) but intrigued! I thought it was an old show at first because Diane Wiest (who I love) looks SO young in the photo you posted!
Thanks for visiting my bluebirds, Brenda! I hope my bluebird houses arrive soon and the bluebirds move in for the summer!

    1. If you want to watch all the episodes (just started last fall) you can go to the NBC website and watch the first one and see if you like it.

    2. NBC only allows you to watch the most recent 4 episodes. We've been paying 1.99 per episode on Amazon for episodes 1-10. So hate to pay for a TV show that is still airing! It's not on Netflix either. My AT&T Uverse also only provides the most recent 4 episodes. We've tried every avenue. We're starting episode 7 tonight. Maybe your readers have another way to watch for free?! Thanks.

  5. I'd been wondering about Tom all along, and was just awed last night when his personality changed so abruptly! I am so excited to see where this storyline will lead now. I am never bored when watching the Blacklist, and James Spader is just awesome.....he is an amazing actor!

I have not been able to pin any photos for Pinterest from your blog since you changed your format. Do I need to do anything different now? The Pinterest icon does not show up on your photos anymore for me to click on.

And I'm so glad your Charlie is doing so well after his teeth removal. I adore your dogs - they are so cute! I have a Corgi, a Pug, and a Chihuahua. They are the little loves of my life!

    Take care, Brenda.

  6. I've not seen this show yet, but your reviews pique my interest. I see that Rachel Brosnahan is in it and I think she does a really good job in House of Cards (the Kevin Spacey show) which has my husband and me sucked in. Love when there's at least one good show to tune in to each week. Have a great week!

    2. Sorry, I just saw this reply, Brenda. It is a Netflix program so they release the entire season at once (so season 2 was just released in February). We are doing a trial (free) membership of Netflix so we're trying to watch it all before it expires. :) However, I just checked online for my county's library system and season 1 is available there. We love to get programs and movies from our library--free! And they do an inter-library program for the whole county where you can easily request books, movies/shows, music online and if it's not in at your location, it'll be transferred over from another location. And we also find that we don't wait very long for requested items even if we're, say 50th on the list.

  8. I've never seen this show...but I've been a fan of Spader's since he was in PRETTY IN PINK...:)
O, he was so purdy when he was young. :)

    1. He may not be as purdy now. But his outstanding acting in this show MORE than makes up for it!

  9. Great synopsis and commentary on this week's show!

I have been a fan of James Spader since he played Allan on Boston Legal. I still recognize his voice on the Acura commercials. Although very different from Allan, he is deviantly super in his role as Red in The Blacklist and not nearly as "purdy"! I must agree with Gayle; Lizzie will discover Tom's dalliance at some point. Do you recall a young boy attempted to enter the bathroom when Jolene was jumping on Tom, the mild-mannered elementary school teacher? This young boy saw more than he needed to!

  10. What a fabulous summary! Exactly who in the world is Tom???? James Spader piqued my interest as a young actor in 'Endless Love,' Sex, Lies and Videotape, and lets not forget his mean sexiness in 'Pretty In Pink.' I adore him....his portrayal of Red is brilliant and I honestly think him one of the best actors of his generation. The Blacklist has pulled me in unlike any drama since '24'...and whoa I am so jumping up and down to know that 'Jack' is coming back, lol! Thank Gd the Olympics are over ;)

    1. I didn't realize '24' was still on. When and wher?

I think this is the best acting of James Spader's long and industrious career.

  11. This episode was so good!! The way Tom turned,,, in just a second of time... was kind of bone chilling. His acting is also quite good ~ from kind teacher to whatever monster he will reveal. It will be interesting to find out which entities are pulling the strings on both Tom and Jolene. It seems that whoever they are, it goes back to what appears to have been a plotted wedding between Tom and Lizzie (by Tom & his peeps). So, somewhere, somehow, back in time, people knew there was a connection between Red and Lizzie and are trying, in a very thought out deliberate manner, to attempt to get at Red through what appears to be his only vulnerable spot, which is Lizzie. The entire plot thread of this show is amazing. TWO WEEKS.... we have to wait two weeks!!!!

  12. Very good ideas you have here. The person who writes for this show is either brilliant or extremely creative or both.

TWO WEEKS! I'll have grown horns or something by then!

  13. Well, this made for an interesting and intriguing review of a show I know nothing about. I'm a failure with watching TV. Abby is watching House Of Cards and says it's too complicated for me! Ha! Eh, I'll stick with books!

  15. Oh how I love the Blacklist. It is by far my favorite show now, I have to re watch each one trying to glean more clues. It certainly keeps you thinking. James Spader has always been a favorite of mine, but this role is tailor made for him I think. Great character that would not be nearly as intriguing if played by someone else. And I thought a little bit of trivia about the last show would be fun here. The song that was played in this episode, Jolene, sounds like a man singing. Well after doing some searching and trying to find out who it was singing it. Dolly Parton........but at a slow speed. You can hear the version used on the show on this youtube link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzYHllLv_IE
