Java Talk: Morning Coffee Rituals

Morning Coffee Rituals

Today we're going to talk about our coffee rituals. Be interesting to read everyone's morning methods!

Here's my morning coffee ritual. Or my morning ritual period, is more like it. Every morning I get up and hit the floor with my yoga mat. Then shower, then eat a bowl of cereal. Then it's coffee time.

Some mornings I use the mini Keurig and have one cup in a red mug. I have to use one of four red mugs from Walmart because the others won't fit under the Keurig. Some mornings, like this morning, I'm using the old Cuisinart because I want two cups.

I don't have a coffee grinder. I'm not that much of a connoisseur. I put it in a tight container.

My coffee of choice is Dunkin Donuts. I also like Folgers fancy coffee. Or if I'm buying K-cups, I often just buy brands I find online.

This time I bought decaf Dunkin Donuts ground coffee. I have enough energy so I don't really need the caffeine. Well, I'll alter that. I haven't had decaf in awhile, so if my batteries don't get charged, will switch back to caffeinated!

I will choose one of my four cups on the little red shelf above the coffee bar. There is yellow (which I usually use), black, green and white. The yellow one has a little chip in it, and so I'm fond of it because it isn't perfect.

I add about a teaspoon of Half & Half. Then I add some refrigerated creamer. I found some Dunkin Donuts creamer at Target and I really like it. Otherwise it is Coffee Mate vanilla.

I read and answer emails and drink my coffee. Never have more than two cups. Getting up now to fix cup #2.

So what is your coffee ritual? What is your favorite brand? What do you typically do while you drink it? Do you eat before you have coffee? How many cups will you have? How do you take your coffee? Do you grind your own beans? Do tell...

  1. Howdy from Kansas. I am a devout coffee drinker. Usually after I wake up, freshen up in the powder room, wash my hands and face, I pour a cup of perked coffee. Depending on what mood I'm in depends if I add half n half to my morning perk. Sometimes I like it black. I put a load of laundry in the washing machine, go to my desk, write down what I hope to get done for the day or need to get done, turn on the computer, check the mail, do some paper work, get dressed and then take the granddaughter I babysit to school. Return home and drink my coffee. Pour a second cup if I'm thirsty. That's the grind! I don't grind my coffee and have gone back and forth on the technique used to brew it. From a coffee percolator to a keurig, back to a percolator because of the tight budget I'm on. I'm alright with cold coffee. I don't always limit myself to two cups. Depending on my day. I have a really good recipe for pot roast using leftover coffee over on my blog. So nothing goes to waste. I'm very relaxed about using left over coffee…put the leftover in the fridge and nuke it in the microwave the next day. Hope to hear from you.

    Blessings to you,

    1. You can also use the coffee grounds on some plants. You've got it down! Did you know you could get the little thing that lets you put your own coffee in the Keurig? I think it comes with it. My first one did. Maybe you need to be a professional organizer!

  2. no fancy going on's here - coffee is no special brand, I don't like strong coffee and really mine is almost half cream (international house french vanilla) couple sugars with toast or yogert - bring it to the sewing room and sit at the table with the computer checking mail and reading blogs. Sometimes instead of coffee it is a pot of green tea - like that a little sweet too :) usually by summer I will be cutting down my time by half in the morning computer routine and sit outside instead - sometimes still in my pj's on the porch drinking a cup of coffee and listening the birds.

  4. Foldgers or Maxwell House with hazelnut creamer :) (more than 2 cups usually LOL) In winter - the brood wants oatmeal, and in warm months- cheerios. Typically we have the news on while we get ready. All lunches are made the night before. Morning rituals are routine- evenings? Get a little hectic since the coffee is wearing off !! haaaaaaaaaa >>> Do you watch the sit-com THE MIDDLE (hilarious). ?? There was an episode EXACTLY like our family. Typically, we all return in the evening with carry-out dinner,,,, no matter how hard we try to eat healthy and cook ourselves..........local carry-out and delivery places know our family by first names!

    1. I'm not familiar with that show. There are so many shows I see on commercials and I have no idea. And I'd like to watch a few. I'm a strictly night tv viewer. Don't have a tv in the living room. I love hazelnut coffee beans in my mason jar candle. They smell terrific! I keep meaning to eat right. They just took blood to check my cholesterol. Friday Never took meds for it. I may be having to change things when I get that back if they read me the riot act. Hope it's okay because I just don't have time to cook! Where do you all find the time? I don't even have anyone but me and the pupsters to take care of!

  5. After I come out of my bedroom I turn the t.v. on to the news, go to the kitchen and start my coffee in my one-cup Keurig maker. I use nothing but Dunkin Original and go to their store to purchase two 1lb bags at a time for a cheaper price than any I see in groceries. I have two styles of favorite cups and they are both cream colored. One is taller and requires that I remove the lid to the over-flow tray and sit the cup down in. I use Publix grocery store liquid creamer - it's better than half and half. I can't stand flavored coffee! I usually start focusing on the t.v., reading material or something and nearly without fail let one or both of the cups I make get too cooled down! I love it hot. I would drink more than two a day but that much creamer would not be good for me.

    1. I didn't know it was cheaper at their store. Course I don't even know if they have a store here. I just learned yesterday that you can take the silver bottom thingie out of the Keurig and put a tall mug in!

  6. My morning routine is simple. I wake up, stretch and yawn for a long time (still in bed), finally get out of bed and walk down the hall to the kitchen. There I start my POT of coffee. I use my parents old Bunn coffee maker. The thing has to be 22-23 years old. Still keeps on working it's magic for me, every day, sometimes twice a day. Once I start the coffee, I RUN to the bathroom - because getting the coffee on was far more important when I got out of bed. Then I go back to the kitchen and partake of my first cup standing propped against the counter and drinking it quickly (got to get that shot of caffeine fast). I love Community Coffee...the stronger the better. I also use Folger's French Roast. I use Splenda and skim milk, usually, but I love real cream. After that first cup, I get my Bible and do my morning devotion and write in my journal. Then I go back for more coffee. I pull out my Quik Trip travel mug and fill it up. I sip on that until the pot is dry then I eat breakfast. Sometimes, when my back allows, I try to do a bit of Tai Chi or Yoga. My morning routine is way more relaxed than it used to be and I love it.

    Grace & Peace,

    1. You're doing the right think, yawning and stretching. If you think about it, what do animals do when they wake up? They don't pop up like a jack-in-the-box. They stretch and stretch. Which is why I do yoga stretching. However I think I hurt something in my back in the move and tomorrow I shall be going to a chiropractor Judy's granddaughter works for. I could not drink coffee on an empty stomach. My head would probably blow off like in cartoons!

  7. My morning routine is fairly simple. I have one of those coffee makers with a timer, so coffee is ready when I get up at 5am. I pour my first cup of coffee with International Delights Coffee Creamer in White Chocolate Mocha. Yum! I feed my cat, then I sit down and read the Bible and my daily devotion. Afterwards, I make up the bed, straighten up, and vacuum the carpets. Then it's shower, hair, makeup, and breakfast, which consists of Cheerios with fruit, cranberry juice, and a protein smoothie (it's the only way I can get my vitamins down without gagging). After doing all that, I get myself another cup of coffee, sit down and watch a little news. Finally, I wash dishes, get dressed, take my meds, grab another cup of coffee for my tumbler, make sure everything is turned off, pet my cat, tell him I love him and that I'll see him at lunch, then I head on out the door to work.

    Talk to you soon,

    2. I never wear makeup either! Prefer the natural look. For a special occasion, like a wedding, I'll put on mascara and lip balm.

    5. Miss Brenda, I've worn makeup since I was 13. I guess old habits die hard. I still think Cheerios is an upscale cereal. I've eaten it since I was 2 y/o. I won't eat any other cereal. I did forget to mention the coffee I use... it's Folgers Classic Roast. I won't drink anything else. I've never even been to a Starbucks. Gee, I am a creature of habit!

    6. I wear makeup every single day too, even if I'm not going anywhere. But it's very simple - a tinted moisturizer, a little blush, mascara, and lip gloss.

  8. Oh goodness, this looks fun. My daughter's chihuahua wakes me up at about 5:45 a.m. when he crawls up from under the covers. I know, I NEVER thought I'd let a dog sleep with me. I get up and let him and my two pugs outside to go potty.
I have to say, I am a coffee snob and I have been since way before Starbucks. That said, I turn on the Kuerig if its a work day and wait for it to heat up. I fill the dogs food bowls and let them in. I use several different kinds of K-cups depending on what is on sale. I use Starbucks, Emeril's Big Bold, or lately Costco has a new branch called the San Francisco coffee company. I either use half and half or cream. I don't like sugar in my coffee. When I was home, I would grind my coffee beans and make a pot of coffee. Once in awhile, on a cold winter evening I will make a pot of decaf and put a splash of Baileys Irish Cream in it. I usually take my coffee back to my room and read my daily devotional and sometimes write in my journal. Then I go looking for what I'm going to wear that day and head in to the kitchen to make my lunch. Once in awhile, if I need another cup of coffee, I'll stop by Starbucks and treat myself to a tall coffee with cream and take it to work. I'm a librarian and I think books and coffee go perfectly together.
Thanks for letting me share :)

  9. I am disabled and so my dear sweet husband gets up and makes me coffee every morning. He doesn't drink coffee himself. He brings a big mug of hot coffee to me in bed, then he walks our 3 little dogs. Along with my coffee I take my first round of meds. Later with my second cup of coffee I eat a little bit of something like a granola bar or toast, so I can take my second round of meds. I watch TV news and a couple favorite shows during this 2 hour time period. My little dogs enjoy keeping me company when they get back from their long walk. Once my meds kick in then I am physically able to get up and shower with help. The rest of my day just depends on how well I'm functioning....
I drink Folgers Breakfast Blend with 2 tsp. sugar added to a big mug. I drink 2 big mugs every morning made in my Cuisinart coffeemaker. Sometimes later in the day I will have hot tea or ice tea depending on the weather. My meds make me very sleepy and so I really need my caffeine to be alert at all...
Have a good day, Brenda. :)

  10. I am a night owl, so I usually sleep in until 8am. By then, my teens and husband are already gone for the day--and so the coffee pot still has about 2 cups of coffee in it. I will roll out of bed, throw on my robe, and downstairs for that first cup. I pour one cup, dump the remainder and make a fresh pot. We prefer to grind our beans. When we lived in the states, we always bought our coffee from a local coffee roaster, but now that we live in Germany, we are trying different brands to find the "right" aroma, roast, and undertones. We prefer to use a coffee mill as opposed to the blade grinders because the grind is more consistent. While my fresh pot brews, I sit outside with that first cup of coffee (usually not so tasty because it was brewed at 0600) and partake in a bad habit of smoking. When my smoke is gone, and my large mug with a stencil of an old antique ink pen is empty (I only fill it 1/2 way at first), I return to the kitchen for my 2 mug of coffee. I drink it black. I love the flavor of a good roast. I will have another smoke, then top off my cup and upstairs to the office to check emails, my blog, and FB. I'm usually a full 12 hours behind on my updates from friends and family living in the states. Once that secondish cup is empty I will shower and dress for the day. It's usually about 930. Then I refill my mug, and gt started with the housework. Since I am a coffee fiend, I will usually brew a a small pot of coffee after lunch (my first meal of the day) with my french press and enjoy the coffee in my turquoise cup from Ikea along with a sweet treat. Before we moved here, my routine was much different because I had to rush off to school by 7am. I am really enjoying this relaxed routine that I have fallen into since moving overseas.

  11. I make a pot of 12 cups in the Mr. Coffee. about 6 am most work days. I tidy the kitchen while it's brewing; or empty the dishwasher. I try to have at least a few sips before it is time to get my son up for work--he is disabled from a diving accident, and cannot get up on his own. Once he is up and in his wheelchair, I fix his breakfast, which includes coffee, and sit down to a fresh cup while he eats, and finishes getting ready for work. About this time, my hubby comes out for his morning cup of coffee and breakfast. We are all cereal eaters in the morning, but I wait until the men have left the building before I have breakfast. Usually I start a load of laundry right after they leave. Then I sit down with a fresh cup of coffee, my cheerios my lap top, and GMA on the TV. Usually the TV is on mute, but I like to catch the weather report.

I like my coffee in a mug; I have quite a mug collection that I have been paring down. I have 8 white mugs from Target that seem to fit my hand well, and fit on the shelf above the coffee maker. I like a lot of half and half in my coffee, and sometimes the Coffee Mate French Vanilla creamer. In the afternoon, I will sometimes have a pick me up cup about 4 pm. I've tried something called "Half-Caf," for the Keurig, and I like it or a cup of Chai Latte about 4 pm. My son likes his coffee about a third coffee, a third half and half and a third French Vanilla Creamer! We are moving towards more coffee and less creamers. Hubby takes his with half and half, but not as much as I like.

    1. We are alike in that we take Half and Half and Coffee Mate French Vanilla creamer. That is my old standby. I love "when the men have left the building." I guess it's most relaxed when "the men have left the building." I think it's really important when you buy dishes (not that I'll ever need to again. I sold a lot last month) to make sure you like the feel of the coffee cup in your hand.

  12. I don't drink coffee but do chai tea so hope can share my routine. Coffee made my stomach burn and even went the r. oute of cream, flavored creams, sugar, truvia and decided just had to find something else to drink. Love, love, my chai tea. I wake up and let our dog out for potty, walk down the lane to get morning paper (usually in pj's) enjoy the morning air and then go inside start Keurig. I turn on Imus in the morning, read paper and have my breakfast which usually is homegrown eggs, chai tea and a glass of juice I may or may not throughout the day have another cup of tea. I love this forum. Keep it up.

  13. My morning routine doesn't vary much. The cat comes into the bedroom about 4:50 to let me know it is her breakfast time. Her clock has not been set ahead to day light savings time. I am a side sleeper so that is where she sits and starts to tap my head. Tap, tap, tap. No claws, just her paw lightly waking me up. I can usually convince her to wait until the more decent time of 6:15 to have breakfast.
At that time I go into the bathroom, and do my morning hygiene. I shower at night so that is never something I do in the morning. When I leave the bathroom Boo (the cat) is sitting outside the bathroom. She is demanding her breakfast right now!. She walks in front of me down the hall, talking/yelling at me all the way to the kitchen. There is no time to make my coffee until the cats have been fed.
There are 2 cats, but Boo is the bossy one. Ozzy just reap the benefits from that bossiness.
Now I can make my coffee. Our coffee maker broke a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately I had a French press and was able to use that until I got a new one.
I was really wanting a Kuerig, but decided it would only confuse my husband and he would probably end up throwing it out into the woods. So, I got a Bunn instead. It is a wonderful coffee maker and a good switch from what I had.
I love the Dunkin' Donuts coffee, and pick it up whenever I can. Otherwise it is generally Folgers. Another favorite is Seattles Best. I drink a 3. They have numbers letting you know the grind and the strength of the coffee.
I buy my coffee already ground. I had a grinder but have used it to grind herbs, and never was able to get their flavor out of the grinder. Plus, I think a commercial grinder does a far better job than what my small one at home does.
Once I get my coffee I head to my comfy chair and computer. I drink my coffee in one of two mugs. One is a glass mug that a friend hand painted a lovely garden scene on. The other is a thrift store find. I got 2 mugs that were originally from Anthropologie. Beautiful red and yellow. I got them for $1.00 each!
I usually have 3 cups of coffee. Sometimes a 4th cup with creamer sort of as dessert. I use whatever brand has the flavor Italian Sweet Cream.
In the Spring and Summer I take my coffee outside so that I can hear the woods waking up from a long peaceful night. I love to share my coffee hour with the birds.
That's my morning coffee routine. And unless I am going out to run errands that day it doesn't change. If I am running errands I don't take time to make coffee. I get something at the gas station.

  14. My morning/coffee routine is a little boring but I'm just glad to have made it here early!!

I'm really fortunate to be able to wake up when I want now that motherhood no longer blasts me out of bed. I let my hounds out and make the coffee...a full pot. We have a Bunn that makes a full pot in about 2 minutes (it always has hot water in the tank). I love Dunkin Donuts French Vanilla but its. $16.99 for 1.5 lbs. here. I've been experimenting with other French Vanilla brands, even grinding my own beans...nothing is as good. So I just switch off between them. I drink a pot in the morning and usually have a cup using the Kuerig in the afternoon. I generally don't move while I'm having that first pot...I do my laptop stuff and watch the news. I like to think of it as "me" time. I used to have another whole pot in the afternoon but I weaned myself off that. I also weaned myself off flavored creamers about a year and a half ago. I was really addicted to the sweetness and was dumping a ton into each cup of coffee until it no longer tasted like coffee. It has tons of fat and/or calories in it, too. It was hard but with the number of cups I drink per day, it was a significant amount of bad stuff.

I drink herbal tea in the evenings and iced tea quite a bit in the summer. And that's it! Great topic!

  15. My morning routine starts when my two kitties decide it's time for me to get up.. That can be anywhere from three in the morning until five or six.. I get up, open all of the curtains, open the back door to look at my "back forty", my flowers and any critters who may be out there looking for their morning breakfast..
Yesterday, I had thrown some stale bread and a bunch of grapes, that were browning, out for the squirrels.. This morning the bread and grapes were gone but "low and behold" there was a big opossum out there... I know who ate the buffet that I left for the squirrels..
I, then, feed my kitties, fix myself a bowl of cereal with granola, enjoy some fresh pineapple, have the Keurig make a cup of coffee for me and turn on the TV.. I usually watch the Today show. I'd rather watch something else but that's my daughter's favorite so I give in.
I've been using Green Mountain Morning Blend, GM Nantucket roast, GM Hazel nut and Folgers brand coffees. I like to have two slight teaspoons of sugar and a "slosh" of half and half in my cup.
I have a red mug that feels good in my hand, an ironstone mug that has hand painted pears on it and a white that is a bit more dainty from which I like to drink my coffee and tea. I used to be strictly a tea drinker. I think it was Ms. Brenda who changed that. I love her red single brew Keurig so had to have one also.. My daughter started drinking coffee, so why should I be different. I still enjoy a nice hot cup of Lipton decaf tea with sugar and skimmed milk. I love my coffee hot. No lukewarm coffee for me.
After my breakfast, I head for my computer to read A Cozy LIttle House and a few other blogs that are favorites of mine. I absolutely love many of the pinterest boards.. I search for the garden specialties this time of the year and then for Fall and Christmas ideas later in the year..
While I'm at the computer I have two kitties wanting my attention.. Pippa (our girl kitty) shows that by getting between the monitor and key board and Sheldon (her brother) brings stuffed birds and plastic coils for me to throw for him.
I have to tear myself away from the interesting things I find to read and "drool" over on the computer, take my shower and start my day.
Wishing everyone a joyful, blessed day !

  16. Hi. So fun to read what is going on in households every morning. We have coffee and breakfast in bed every day. It started about eight years ago when we lived in a home with a great view from our bedroom window. We could watch birds and the changing colors in the sky while we ate. We've moved and don't have a good view, but still have a similar routine. We wake up at 4:45 a.m., to the radio tuned to some classic country music. My husband sings along with whatever is playing and it makes us laugh, so it's a good way to start the day. I go downstairs to fix breakfast while he does his exercises. First off, I feed our two cats. Then, on a pretty flowered plate I arrange apple and banana slices, raisins, almonds, and toasted whole wheat bread (made in the bread machine). If we have any other fruit around, like strawberries or grapes, I'll add that too. I also fix up two bowls of plain yogurt topped with some honey or sorghum. I make Folger's Columbian coffee in a little Mr. Coffee. (Our beloved vintage GE percolator recently conked out.) I make pretty strong coffee. My husband drinks his with a ratio of two-thirds coffee and one-third skim milk. I just put a small splash of skim milk in mine to change the color a bit. Neither of us sweetens our coffee. I heat the milk in the microwave so it doesn't cool down the coffee I put everything on a tray and carry it upstairs. (It takes about 15 minutes or so to get it together.) We pray, then eat while propped up in bed. While we are eating, we check the weather online and check the sports news for the university we both graduated from. (Go Big Blue!) We hold off on serious news until later in the day, so that we aren't too agitated so early in the morning. Then I go downstairs and make my husband's lunch while he gets ready for work, and make a lunch for me if I am going to be working that day.

The best thing I've done since we've moved here is, I put cup hooks under the kitchen cabinets to hang our coffee mugs. We have much less cabinet space than before, and hanging the mugs frees up a lot of space. Plus, I enjoy looking at the mugs.

My husband prefers a big mug with a big handle, so he can get a good grip on it. His favorite has a design of a country town. I like a smaller mug. In the winter, we pick from a variety of snowman mugs. Right now, I am choosing from several mugs with flowers on them, for spring. Most all of the mugs are from thrift stores.

  17. Mr. Coffee coffee pot ( have a Keurig that I rec'd as a gift but rarely use it ) and I get the coffee ready to go the night before ( Folgers...whatever is on sale though I like the breakfast blend the best )

I usually am up pretty early...by 5 or so...go to the kitchen, start the coffee, let the dogs out, and the minute the coffee has enough for a half cup I turn it off and get started, then turn it back on for the remainder. Sugar and generic creamer. I usually have about 3 cups of coffee using the same blue & white Corelle mugs that I've had since I was in my twenties : )

Then I check the weather, local news, CNN, email, blog to see if there are comments to return visits to, FB friends and family page. By then I've downed 2 cups of coffee. After a shower and all, breakfast is usually back in front of the computer visiting a few blogs and having the last cup of coffee. I can't drink coffee later in the morning or day or I'll not be able to sleep well. Anything later would be decaf tea.

  18. Did I publish this last night? I am so off right now. Changing email subscriptions and fixing things I forgot has absolutely drained me dry. And now I have the washer coming this afternoon sometime between 12 and 5 (can't pin them down) and I will have to try to bribe them with cash to bring it inside. They were going to put it at the curb! All 245 pounds of it! Talked them out of that at least.

  19. Coffee has been my “thing” since an early age. In our family (from Virginia), coffee with cream & sugar, was part of breakfast, along with eggs, bacon, & biscuits. Coffee was always synonymous to me with warmth, family, cozy feelings. Even during the teen years I’d rather have a Dunkin Donuts “double-double,” than pop. Then marrying, having children, a full-time job, no matter where I went, there was always a cup of coffee with me. The console in my car always had spills (before travel mugs); and I always brewed a fresh pot every morning, carrying a 1-quart thermos to have all day at work. Can’t tell you how many times I sat a cup of coffee or thermos of coffee on the top of my car, while putting my briefcase & purse in, and driving off – leaving broken mugs/thermoses along the road. Somewhere along the line my husband started bringing me coffee in bed before work. And he did the same for our daughter (we were the family sleepy-head night-owls). My sons never drank coffee, but they were always aware. If we ate dinner at a restaurant they would groan if I asked for a refill. My husband had told them that we could not leave until Mom was finished with her coffee. We laugh about how everyone at the table would watch my cup! We’ve been married for 42 years and have been retired for over 10 years, and he still brings me that cup of coffee each morning. He bought me a coffee cup hot-plate to keep it warm by my bed! We used to be strictly Folgers Columbian Roast drinkers, but since the Keurig I love Donut House Coffee.

  20. I've been using Gevalia K-cups, since Caribou ruined what I was drinking from them. They are the same price as Folgers in my grocery store, but I often buy from Amazon. I threw out my regular coffee pots and only use my Keurig. I use only half and half and can't stand anything sweet in my coffee or tea. Feeding the pets is always first here and then I get my coffee and read emails. The rest of the day is planned after this.

    1. I didn't even know Gevalia had K-cups. I always seem to be just a little behind on everything! I just got my last cup of coffee, put everything in it, then saw a gnat floating. If it had been any other beverage, I would have poured it down the drain. But since it was my last cup of coffee, I just dug it out with my finger and continued on!

    2. I got a good deal today on the Gevalia K-cups at my local grocery store. They were on sale for $2.00 less per box and if you bought two boxes, which I did, you got one box free.

  21. Good morning Brenda,
Life can be fun. I enjoy reading everyone's morning routines. It helps us see we are all not so very different. No matter where we live.
I too, am awakened most mornings by the scampering of the little paws of our yorkie "Goldie". I slide out of bed, put on the Folgers in my Hamilton Beach Brew Station, take Goldie out, and come back in for coffee.
I drink from one of a set of 4 mugs with roosters on them. The top rims and insides are rusty red, colonial blue, yellow, and green. Today it's the red one.
I too like to read "The Cozy Little House". It is sure nice to visit with other ladies about this and that.
I next try to spend at least an hour in prayer and reading my Bible. This makes my day go so much better.
Thanks again for the visit. Have a great day.

I enjoy all of your comments, and get a lot of laughs at the same time. I hear that darned male cardinal singing out there. But he will fly off if I get as far as the patio door. Abi has a habit of barking too, which doesn't help. The pupsters mostly wait till I get up before they do. They like to sleep in!

  22. At dawn before anyone else is up (around 6:30) I have a cup of English black tea with a little almond milk and Joint-Free dissolveable powder (actually makes the tea taste slightly sweeter). Then after I have dressed, etc. and gotten the grandson off to school and daughter to work (we are a one-car family) I THEN sit down with my coffee. One large mug of Green Mountain Breakfast Blend (the only kind I will drink) from the Keurig, with a little almond milk. I usually watch the news and weather for a few minutes before I start my chores. I don't have coffee every day, but I always have my tea.

  23. We recently purchased our third BUNN coffee maker, as our second one (that lasted for years!!) finally died. We were without our BUNN for almost a week, before we made that trip to buy another one. Being used to having our coffee in about two minutes, and having to wait 15 min. or more for the Mr. Coffee that we have on standby, made me so impatient!! (spoiled, aren't we?) Thankfully, things are back to normal with our new BUNN. We are empty nesters and almost retired from our jobs, and hubby usually gets up before I do and makes the coffee Depending on whether he is in a hurry to leave the house, determines how much coffee is usually waiting for me when I finally get up around 8:00-8:30. I let the dogs out, (For their second time, as hubby as usually let them out already, if they needed to go), and then I drink coffee, read facebook, email, and blogs until I"m done with the coffee. I can make that time period last anywhere from an hour to three hours, depending on what's on my agenda for the day. Sad, isn't it... I waste so much time here, but make it such a part of my day. As for what type of coffee, we drink 1/2 decaff.... usually Maxwell house, sometimes Folgers. I have a keurig and rarely use it. I rarely buy coffee for it, as we drink so much from the big pot, that it's hard to justify spending $ on those little K cups. Having said that, I still can't bring myself to depart with it, even though I have considered selling it on Craigslist. I do love my coffee and hubby and I usually drink another cup or two late in the day... I only use a tiny bit of heavy cream in my cup. I gave up the Splenda habit sometime back and have adjusted my taste buds to coffee with just cream.... but no black coffee, please!! I just can't do that, yet!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I can't drink black coffee either. I've never used a Bunn. Or even had coffee made from it actually. I don't really think it's sad. You're not wasting time. You're doing what you enjoy. It's part of your day. If you were reading the paper or watching the morning show, same thing. Just like I say there are no right or wrongs in terms of decorating, I don't believe there are right and wrongs to what brings us joy and what we partake of. My new motto is: Choose joy!

  24. After I take the weiner dog out for a little 5 minute business walk, I pour myself a huge glass of diet coke....yes, diet coke. I am not a coffee drinker, although I love it, it does not love me back. Then spend about 40 minutes getting ready for work while listening to the morning news and I am out the door by 7:40am. I drink about two quarts of iced tea during my work day. I drink hot green tea during winter months with added sweetener. I have risked my stomach for the sake of an occasional treat from Starbucks: a black and white. SUBLIME!

  25. My day begins at 4:00 sharp with the gentle tapping of my kitty's paw on my face. Which is following by a wet nose, if I don't respond. Therefore, my first task is to feed the cat, who each morning, persistently insists she has never been fed! At this point, my comfy recliner/rocker beckons to me to sit with a tall glass of Diet Coke. I check my e-mail, Brenda's blog for new comments from the previous evening, and Facebook. Breakfast is cereal or instant oatmeal at 6:00. As the sun begins to transform the sky, I'm sipping water with lemon, enjoying the glorious transition to daytime. I alternate between both beverages for the rest of the day. With my day begun, next I fall asleep in my chair with my kitty in my lap!

  26. Every morning is different for me. It depends on how much sleep I've gotten the night before as to what time I get up. If I slept good and get up early, then I'll drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee. I like it black and I usually have Folger's made in the Cuisinart. It I get up say around 8 or later, I might have a cold Pepsi. Or iced tea if there's any left in the fridge. Before I drink anything, I have to feed the furbabies. And most mornings I'm awakened by my kitty, Stormie, patting me on the face. My hubby is a very early riser and doesn't eat breakfast except on weekends. He gets his coffee during the weekdays at work. I have my coffee while first reading the news and then some blogs. If the weather is nice, I'll go sit and drink my coffee or iced tea on the patio while planning what I'm going to do that day after the morning chores are done.

  27. Morning, Brenda, great discussion today. My old dog wakes me around 6 or 6:30, he goes out, then back, then maybe the two others will sleep in for a bit. I'm usually up around 7:30 though to let them all out. I start the coffee then. I have to admit, I'm a thief! Yes, I'm a coffee thief. I love my coffee strong, and for some reason my husband is making it weaker than usual, so when the pot hits the 4 cup mark I'm ready to steal my cup of coffee. He doesn't know what I'm doing! I've scaled way back, and usually only drink one cup in the morning while reading emails and Brenda's blog! We use Yuban Dark roast here, have used it for years. When I was reporting in court I had a coffee maker in my office and it was always going for the Judge, atty conferences, and detective friends would just come up to my office as they knew I always had coffee for them! I drank it all day long, but have really cut back If it's a cool day I enjoy another cup in the afternoon. Sometimes I'll take it on the patio and let the dogs play and enjoy my views and the hills. My daughter's horse is still living here, and I put him out often and muck, so then I shower. Right now I have two humming birds flitting around in my orange tree, so fun to watch as I'm sipping my coffee. Can't wait to hear what Brenda has to say about her delivery today! She must be so excited!

    1. Oh, you have hummingbirds! That male cardinal, I'm convinced, is playing with me. I'm sitting in the bedroom at the desktop and he comes and starts singing. I jump up and by the time I get to the patio door, gone. So I've been sitting here working and watching him flit about through the window. Enjoying his antics as he lights on gazing balls and things out there. He's not ready to be sociable yet. That's okay. I'll wait him out.

I watch the birds having their breakfast in their birdfeeders and talk to my cats, Molly and Spooky. I have about an hour quiet time then get busy cleaning the house or whatever.....I am a slow person in the morning. Sometimes I read the paper or call my Mother (who is 91 and still going strong). 30. Well, my routine differs from work week to weekends. Work week - I get up and fix a cup of Community Coffee Café Special in the Keurig, then shower, clothes, makeup, hair, another cup of coffee in my go cup. When I get to work, I usually have 2-3 more cups, maybe 1 more in afternoon. Weekends, use a 4 cup maker to make coffee while drinking my first cup, from Keurig. Love my coffee. Oh and I drink it black with no sugar. That's how my Daddy taught me. I've tried cream and it really just makes me gag. I like to smell cream in coffee, but cannot drink it and the sugar really messes up the taste. But, it's all what you get used to, I'm sure.

  31. I work, my partner is retired and doesn't get up when I do, so the Keurig makes the most sense for us. I use the prepared K-cups, preferring Newman's Own blend, but also use the special cups so I can use my own freshly ground coffee, Upon awakening, I push the Keurig on and let the dogs out. When my coffee is ready, I go out on the front porch to watch the dogs scampering around in the morning air and do a couple of yoga moves. When the dogs come in, I make a second cup to enjoy while I'm getting ready for work. I will retire in August so my routine will change somehow. Very cool to imagine how. On weekends, I use the ceramic drip, the french press, or Keurig brew, depending upon mood. My favorite in the warm weather is to use the french press and take it out on the front porch or back deck. In winter, we like to brew decaf to take out to the fire pit to have with some Amaretto splashed in.

We really like folgers dark roast and our coffee maker is set on a timer so its ready when I get up , usually about 5:30.

I always shower at night before bed and layout my clothes. Since I work from home thats pants and a soft long or short sleeve tshirt.
Bathroom is always first when my feet hit the floor:) then clothes and out to the kitchen for coffee ,sweet and with a tiny amount of creamora. I take it to my desk behind the sofa, turn on the news and get online.
The first cup gets me awake , the 2nd cup I have with raisen toast or a bagel n cream cheese w/my daily vitamins and herbs.. Lately I've added 1/2 a banana and this is it till about 1 when I have soup or a salad or cheese crackers. Never sure what supper will be and I have been known to skip it :) Food isnt really a exciting thing for me...
Though I only have the 2 cups a day I adore the scent of brewed coffee all the time. I love coffee ice cream but limit that to a few times a year. When I worked with the public I always tried to have clients meet me at one of our 2 coffee shops.. In those days I was drinking 7 cups or more a day.... that kind of consumption would make me too jittery now...
thanks for another great topic Brenda. I really look forward to this.

  35. When I first wake up I like to stay in bed for a bit before jumping out of bed. Then I head to the kitchen and pour some water in a mug and place it in the microwave to warm it up. While that's going I may make the bed (if hubby is up) or do some stretching. I use Tassimo Signature Blend...not too strong, not too weak. I use one teaspoon of raw sugar and 1% or 2% milk.

Then I take my coffee and my iPad to my favorite chair and read emails and check on FB. I usually don't wake up hungry, so I might wait an hour or so before eating breakfast, which is usually oatmeal. Unless we go out for dinner, one cup a day is all I drink.

  36. What a great topic! If it was a chilly winter morning right now I would have to make myself a cup of coffee right now after reading about the delicious coffees that everyone is having in the morning. I'm not usually a coffee drinker, but when I do, I make it in my old electric percolator. I like Papa Nicholas French Caramel Crème flavored coffee. I add enough milk to it to make it pale, and one sugar cube. Normally for breakfast I have a Glucerna Hunger Control drink, and then a little later a Diet Coke. That is my caffeine booster. While I'm drinking my breakfast, I check my to do list for the day. I wear lipstick or gloss everyday. If I'm going to be doing errands, I also use concealer, blush, and eyebrow pencil, too If I am getting ready to work outside in the yard, I put on my big ol' wide brimmed hat. It keeps me cooler and keeps my face out of the sun. I also run all of my fingernails over a bar of soap before gardening. That makes the dirt come out from under my nails easier. I hate garden gloves, they make me feel like I am all thumbs.

At around 2:30 in the afternoon, I sometimes have a cup of tea with milk and 1 sugar cube. Fuzzy, my Pomeranian, spins and begs for some. I spoon some out into his little bowl and he laps it up in 5 seconds. I think it is the warm milk in it that he wants. I started having my afternoon cup of tea this winter when the days were so long and cold and dark. Now that it is 89 degrees and I am burning up by afternoon from puttering in the yard, Fuzzy still thinks the "cuppa tea tradition" must continue. At 2:30 he starts in on me, huffing, puffing, paw tapping, and spinning, telling me it's tea time. Amazing how dogs and cats can tell time, isn't it? It has been hot here for the last two days so Fuzzy was sorely disappointed when I did not have hot tea. I draw the line at making hot tea for the dog. I (and Fuzzy) like P & G Tips brand of tea.

I don't know if it's the nosy neighbor in me, but I find it fascinating to see how people start the day - it gives me ideas and inspirations about what I could do! My morning routine is pretty standard - once I get my teenage son out the door, it's a cup of decaf with the Keurig (LOVE that invention) with non-fat creamer, and then sit down at my computer and read theses blogs ! 43. I'm a little late to the party with my comment but I wasn't online yesterday. Love this post! My morning starts around 7:00 when my husband wakes me up to tell me he's leaving for work. He's so good - he gets up on his own, makes his breakfast and coffee allowing me to sleep in. He's a gem. I crawl out of bed and head to the bathroom where I do my oil pulling for the next 15 minutes. My little dog Mister is awake at this point....if I can get him out of bed then I'll tidy the bed while finishing my oil pulling. After it's time to take Mister outside....he likes to take his time walking the yard so I usually do a little weeding while he takes his time! Finally we get back inside and I put the kettle on for hot water. I then drink a cup of warm water with lemon juice and cayenne pepper to detox my liver before eating or drinking anything. Next the kettle goes back on for water for my French Press. While the water is boiling I grind the coffee beans and get my press ready. I drink decaf but always dark French Roast, and black.
Once the coffee is made Mister and I climb into my big chair together and I either read or watch some show on tv that I've taped and enjoy my very large cup of coffee. Afterwards I'll have some breakfast and then feed Mister. After he's settled following his meal I usually have a cup of green tea.
Now that I read my routine I realize how rigid it is and how I am such a creature of habit! But I do love my mornings. Weekends aren't much different, just the hubby is home and we may have a second pot of coffee. Sunday mornings are the best when we all three pile onto the sofa in the library room we have, surrounded by our books, soft music playing and reading the paper. There's nothing better to me!

I grind the beans (I love fresh coffee - and I buy Trader Joe's organic Morning blend beans; sometimes it's Dunkn Donuts beans) and then heat up water on the stove for my french press. I have tried every coffee maker out there and there is nothing like coffee made in a french press! I enjoy one big cup of coffee - with real half and half (organic) and some stevia - as I read emails and browse FB. Then I hit the shower and get going with my day. I don't eat breakfast (which is typically plain Greek yogurt with raw almonds, fresh fruit, flax and chia seeds, unsweetened organic coconut, and a little bit of natural sweetener such as stevia, raw honey, or pure maple syrup) for 2-3 hours after I get up. I just can't eat first thing in the morning.
