Many Colors Can Happily Co-Exist In One Space

I've been bringing out my quilts. I know, sounds silly in this heat. But I just needed to see them. To be surrounded by them.

Abi saw me get the camera and she went up the doggy steps and got in perfect posing position. She's such a diva.

I thought I was going to paint this sideboard back to red. Even went out and got the paint. But then I decided, why? It can fit in with the other colors. And I rather like it orange.

Just look at all the colors here. Every color in the rainbow! And in my opinion, it looks fine. I'm no color "purist."

Don't let anyone tell you that their are color rules. Because there aren't.

Just go out to your gardening space and cut a bouquet of multi- colored flowers. Put them in a jar and take them to your multi-colored space.

They will fit in just fine. Because we are accustomed to seeing bouquets with many different flowers in many different colors.

We just need to look at our homes in the same way.

  1. Your bedroom is lovely and I agree! I went through a phase of wanting to paint all my rooms white after seeing so many pretty white rooms on blogs. We just weren't able to and now I'm happy we weren't because I'm in love with my colors again.

And to have the quilts that you have, an astonishing asset! I love seeing them again, Brenda!

  6. I love the quilt on the wall and it brings so many color options into your bedroom. I'm trying hard not to be so matchy-matchy myself, but I have to admit, it's kind of a hard habit to break.

  7. I love seeing all the colors in your Home... They wouldn't work here at my place but that's because my nervous system is still a bit fragile.. Right now shades of green and white seem to suit be best and I try to see this as a healing period for me.. In time I'll add back some deep purples and blues..

hope you enjoy your colorful space and that it makes your Soul-SING:) that's always the most important part.

  9. I love your quilts! I have a few...but the most special one to me is a Dutch girl and Dutch boy quilt done in pinks and blues made by my grandmother. We also have a quilt that hubby's grandmother made for him. I need to pull mine out and refold them. Thanks for the motivation Brenda. As for colors I think it is whatever a person likes and gives them joy, peace, comfort, etc. Your mention of garden colors reminds me of something from a design class. The instructor was asked about matching colors. His answer/example was....take greens. All shades of green go together. Just look at nature! Though I am not sure I could use lime green with hunter green! Ha! The only "rule" I learned is that someone should stay within the same color value/depth when using different colors. Example, all pastel or all deeper. I have used that for guidance and it has worked well for me. But I love deeper colors. Burgundy. Navy blue. Gold. Black. Thanks for showing your quilts! Sheila

  11. Hi Brenda! Oh, I love your quilts and these two are so pretty! That little Abi - I noticed she has her eye on the camera in every snap! I agree - color is wonderful. I don't know how people can live in those all white houses!
    Be a sweetie,

  13. OMG could abi BE any more adorable? yes. she's the star and she knows it!
and I don't think it's silly at all.
I have also often used quilts as art. especially as a 'headboard' as in your picture. at least that's how I think of it! and actually I think of them even more as art than something to snuggle under. how odd! :)
and it's wonderful to be saturated in color. especially good for the soul if that's what it hungers for.
and rules are always made to be broken! LOLOL!

  14. I wouldn't want to live without color surrounding me. I guess that's why I love cottage gardens and your patio plantings so much. I love the surprising colors of Spring and Autumn, and my yellow walls make me smile. The only rule I follow is, "Do I love it?" If the answer is yes, that's all I need.

  15. I love your quilts and all their glorious color. Do you feel you are more drawn to color when you feel down? I know I do. Rules are just silly. I try to break them as often as possible. : )

  16. Brenda, I love your use of color. I'm seeing so much neutral everywhere, that I crave color. Maybe it's because I'm an artist, but bland doesn't do it for me. Your room looks comfy. Abi reminds me of our Miss Molly. She usually poses when I have my camera.

  17. As usual, I love it! I think the orange fits quite nicely with the other colors. Now, if you would just come work your magic at my house, I would do back flips all over town!

    Grace & Peace

  20. I so agree, no color rules. I love fall colors and use them all year. I even fit those colors in now to Christmas decorating. Not so much to change all around, and I get to keep up colors I love. So good to see your quilts out again. I don't think quilts EVER go out of style and who cares if some think so. They are timeless and always comforting to use and have out.

  21. You really have the knack for using color and having it look great! It's gift, you know.

  22. I don't think that there are color rules when it comes to quilts!! :) Quilts are a different rule...life and work and time and talent and patience and love...in every stitch of a handmade qullt.

  25. Your bedroom looks like a very comfortable and happy place and that all that matters!

  26. I think most decorators/designers want to be able to "characterize" a design type. Your quilts are "country" but your orange color definitely isn't a country color. But it is very much a "boho" color. Personally, I like to put whatever color makes me smile with whatever color makes me feel peaceful with whatever color I'm currently getting joy from. Like Sonny G said - whatever makes your soul sing. I love the quilts and the orange is gorgeous. If you love it, it's all good.

  31. I am glad to see your colors are back too. I would have a hard time living without the color around me all the time. I tend to lean towards the fall colors for favorites. I know there are plenty of gals out there that like the all white. But, I can't do it. I even tried going towards an all pastel pallet, didn't work, back to the deep falls colors, all the time! I have quilts all over our home & they don't go away in the summer either. We have to live with what make each one of us happy!
