Decorating Around TVs

I didn't think I'd ever want to put a TV in my living space, but I've changed my mind.

You know it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind, don't you?

So I've been scouring the internet looking for decorative ways to style around a TV.

I won't be showing mine until I figure out what I'm going to do! But I already had the TV in the closet, so no ding to my budget.

This is a very traditional way to style around the big black box. Putting it inside shelves always makes it look more tidy.

Decorate the wall around the TV in a gallery style.

A modern look.

Adding a bit more elegance.

Organized with clean lines.

Old school.

A slightly bohemian touch.

Some people are so creative! How about a map behind the TV?

Or make it a work of art?

I call this style "coloring inside the lines."

I've started a Pinterest board of different ways to style decor around your TV. And you can find it here.

  1. Creative ideas, Brenda! I will be watching to see what you do! Happy Thursday, Pam @ Everyday Living

  2. Amazing ideas to decorate around my living room eyesore! Just checked out your pinterest board. Very creative ideas there, also. How will I ever make up my mind which to try?! Thanks, Brenda.

  3. I love the second picture featuring the re-purposed dresser done in white. It looks really elegant plus then you have extra storage. (Patrice from FB)

  4. Oh yes, the black hole in your living room! I love tv though, so I accept it. I wish more TV's came in white, I have a small white for my sewing room, and one to use by the treadmill.. it keeps me on that thing so worth it to me. You show some good options here!

  5. Brenda, it is always interesting to see what people do with their televisions. I only have one, and it is in a giant armoire that I have even though it is a thin one. I had the armoire for years, and I kept it, even though styles have changed. I also added a pin it button. xoxo Su

  6. Welcome to my world!! My giant TV is still a huge black box on the wall. Since I'm never indoors these days I guess it's not bothering me as much...but once fall comes and I'm back inside perhaps I'll get busy once again looking for ways to decorate around it!

  7. My husband rebuilt a built in storage cabinet with shelves and drawers that he removed from a home during a remodeling project years ago. The owners told him he could have it since they were just going to toss it anyway. He added shelves on either side of it for videos and cds and we have all that storage for our massive dvd collection in the drawers also. He painted it white so that it would blend in better with the white wall behind it and visually not take up as much space.

  8. Ah ~ the big black box ~ can't live with it and can't live without it. We have a huge flat screen in the family room on a vintage cabinet. In the master we have a smaller flat screen inside an armoire. It's in the armoire so I can shut the doors to hide the screen. Don't know exactly why because somehow those doors never are closed ;-)

  9. I have a smaller TV and hate the sight of the thing. The map idea intrigues me. Maybe I could pull the map, or whatever, down in FRONT of the TV when it is not in use so you can't see it. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

  10. These are some clever ideas..I like the art behind the TV...

  11. LOL Brenda the other option would simply be to live in a McMansion. Have your TV, bar, etc in the room where you REALLY live and hang out, and then a few other rooms to post on your blog that look elegant and blog-worthy but that no one ever really uses. :)

  12. I have an under the stairs unit built in my new wee cabin. It looks great. We watch some great shows on Netflix, some sports, a little news and the Food network. I am not ashamed or embarrassed. I love the pic with the map and if I had had room I would have used my old white buffet

  13. I have my photos made and the frames to hang around my tv but I have gotten sidetracked with planting flowers and other stuff. Thanks for showing these neat ideas, maybe this will motivate me into getting mine hung up!

  14. Of course ...we have the right to change our minds.ha
Cant wait to see how you decorate around your tv. My tv just sits on a tv table, nothing special.. But hubby would die with out a I don't watch a lot of tv myself.
    Have a great day.

  15. Clever ideas. I have a traditional glass stand designed for components underneath mine but my favorite look is repurposed furniture such as your red chest. Look forward to seeing what you do.

  16. We have only one small TV now since we moved into our much smaller new home. I was able to incorporate it into a bookcase, and it looks really nice and unobtrusive. I don't like when a TV stands out so much that it is the first thing you notice when you come into the room.

  17. I loved that post! I'm just beginning working on the living room and I know that I'll have to find an idea someday to decorate around the TV and I can't make up my mind on what's best. Off to check your Pinterest board!
