Java Talk: Morning Rituals

We haven't had Java Talk in some time. So today let's get some coffee or tea and chat.

Let's talk about our morning rituals.

Mine goes like this:I get up and get on my yoga mat for some good stretching. I've hurt so many parts of my body, I need that to get going.

Then I tend to the pupsters' needs. And then my own.

I start coffee and get a bowl of cereal. Lately I've gone back to my childhood favorite: chocolate Malt-o-Meal. Remember that? Well, I saw it in a store one day, and now I'm stuck on it.

Typically by then Israel is at the door. He loves my coffee. I don't buy anything expensive. It has to be under $5 for me to buy it, and then I usually mix whatever vanilla brand I buy with some good old Folgers.

Then I sit down on the couch with the pupsters and have my cereal. After that I get up for my one cup of coffee. I can't take coffee on an empty stomach.

While sipping my coffee, I get online and start checking email, etc.

Israel doesn't have to be at work yet, and is sitting on one of the wicker chairs with his phone. Usually he's checking out his relatives in Mexico.

So that is my morning ritual. What is yours?

  4. I get up around 6am every morning...and it's light out by then, so I heat water for my green tea & lemon while I pull up the shades throughout the house, then do a brief check on my computer, turn on the news/weather, get the 3 pups up and outside, come in, wipe their paws and get them in the sitting room. Then I wash my hands, get my pills & oils ready for the day and take my morning pills, get the Pups' banana & dry food ready, fill their 2 water bowls in the house, make my oatmeal & banana, set it on the counter in the sitting room, let the dogs eat while I eat, clean up the dishes, unload the dishwasher if it's all clean stuff, clean up the rest of the kitchen, make the bed, do my neti pot, give the pups their treats & brush their teeth. That's all done by 8:30am. After that another brief check [or game played] on the computer. Then I take my shower and get ready to run my errands or make phone calls or whatever. By 10:30am, I'm either cleaning the house, doing laundry or outside working on my courtyard wall that fell in February. We always squeeze snuggle time in along the way!!!

  6. I start with brushing my teeth, taking pills, coffee, and a FiberOne bar or two cupcake sized spinach quiche from our freezer (I'll have to share this recipe). As I sip my three cups of coffee, I look at my iPhone or computer. Then shower and dress for the day. Mr. Cottage lets Molly out in the morning and he makes our bed.

  7. My sweet husband brings me coffee in bed every morning. I drink my coffee and read a few emails etc. with the TV news on in the background. Then I get up and we make the bed. I use my glaucoma meds, shower and dress and use more eye drops. Then I eat the delicious bacon and eggs my husband cooked and use more eye drops. I work part-time so if it is a work day I pack my lunch with my noon time eye meds, load the dishes in the dishwasher and I'm out the door by 8:45 a.m. I call my mom to check on her on my way to work. If it is not a work day I get a load of laundry started, quickly clean the bathroom and make up my to do list. I also call my elderly mother, I check in with
    her everyday.

  8. I hydrate with lemon water first thing! (Think how long your body has gone without water overnight!) Then feed the cats and give them fresh water. Then coffee, email and FB. Then starting my day in earnest...yoga, shower, making my bed, eating breakfast (usually a healthy cereal or a couple of spoons of almond butter and a banana), take my vitamins, then either out the door to run errands or start my daily housework - picking up, straightening, cleaning bathrooms, scooping cat boxes, doing laundry - and in the nice weather, working in my yard.

    1. You always do healthy things for yourself, which is fantastic! My dogs think they need to eat whenever I eat. I find I don't clean house as often as I used to. Of course I'm in the boot a lot and that curbs cleaning activity.

  9. Sounds a lot like my morning routine, only my furry children demand their breakfast first! Then the dog is walked, afterwards, my breakfast & cuppa. These sweet critters keep me centered and loved. I lost my dear husband last August. I love your blog and pretty pictures. Today it's Kroger day, senior discount & a refill of gas. I also do my morning garden walk about daily, checking to see what's in bloom. Hug those dear pups for me.

    1. Hi Patrice! Yes, he's been a gem to me. Driving me places when he can and helping with the dogs while I'm in the boot. But I often provide meals for him, so I hope it evens out. He came in a bit ago and asked what was for lunch! I know he's having to pay a lot of bills for his big family, so I don't mind.

  13. I'm lucky too my husband makes the bed. I get up, make my coffee and give Peep her morning snack. Then computering and then sewing. Lots of wandering around the house during the day, or the yard. Somedays I do tons somedays not. It's a happy life.

  14. I have always admired the self discipline you have in regard to your morning routine. I get out of bed about 6:00 but then drink coffee and waste several hours.
It is so great for Israel that he has a beautiful place to sip his coffee while checking on family. Likewise it is great that you can count on a friend, with a smiling face, coming to check on you each morning.
    Have a great day.

  15. I read email while dogs are eating breakfast, then get ready for work and make the bed. My most important ritual is to read a page in a daily meditation book, though. When I get to work, I take my vitamins and do a page of journaling. Then it's time "9-to-5" activities...blech. Looking forward to the day when I can do what I want with my time...sigh.

  16. Miss Bella gets me up EARLY! It was 4:45 for years, but now in her old age, it is anywhere from 4AM on. I struggle with her to back to sleep until close to 5AM, then we get up. I HAVE to feed her firs, then make Cream of Wheat in the microwave for breakfast. As it cooks for 2 minutes unattended, I take Bella out for the morning. She hurries, and then I finish cooking my breakfast. I then have to give her a Teeth cleaning treat of some kind, then I get curreled up in the recliner, watching I Love Lucy, or old movies on TCM to eat my breakfast. sometimes Bella is on my lap, sometimes not...she is VERY independent! Then, I try to nap until 7:00 when I watch the Today show and grumble about how little like news it is. 7:30 means shower time, and then off to work, or out to the yard. This time of year, and all summer, I might just get up and stay up, and get out to the yard as soon as it is light...or take Bella to the Park for a walk.

    1. I don't watch any form of news anymore. I just hate the mentality of the journalists (and editors above them) going with the "if it bleeds it leads." I like to spend a few minutes walking around the patio and seeing if anything is new from the day before. But I can't stand up long right now, so then it's back in to work online some more. Israel has taken to going out there and doing the same thing when I'm in here!

  19. I make the bed first thing. I can tolerate a little dust, but not an unmade bed. Then I take the 2 pills that are supposed to be taken a while before eating. The kitties are then fed and the water bowl filled and litter scooped and I sweep up the litter they've left on the floor. When that is all done, I'll either fix myself an egg with toast or a bowl of yogurt with berries. Hubby has already left for work and only eats breakfast on the weekends. Once my breakfast is fixed, I'll sit down and eat while reading the news on my computer. After that, I'll get showered and ready for whatever I decide to do next.
I wish I'd had the sense to start doing the stretching exercises a long time ago like you're doing, Brenda. My aging body might be a bit more flexible. Keep it up, you'll be glad you did.

  20. I've been doing those stretches for over 19 years now! Longer than I was ever married!

  21. I love Java talk! I start my mornings with first letting the dogs out and then making coffee. I then go online, check emails and read my favorite blogs while sipping my first cup of coffee. After it warms up some I go outside and take a walk around my tiny backyard, checking on the progress of my one raised bed veggie garden and the containers of flowers that are on my little patio. My husband and the dogs usually join me to sit outside and I enjoy another cup of coffee. Then I go make the bed, shower and get dressed. Hubby usually makes us a combined late breakfast, early lunch meal - I guess you would call it brunch. Often it is leftovers or sandwiches. It is a filling meal and we don't usually eat again until dinner time. After that I usually start laundry or housework, or we make a trip to the library and run errands about once a week. We are really enjoying our retirement together. Even though we are on a tight budget now it has been a real blessing to have this time together....

  22. I have found that one can be quite content on a tight budget. It makes us be creative, to look for answers outside of the box. It sounds like bliss.

  25. Every day it's a little different, depending on whether its a work day, or a day off. But I take my thyroid pill first thing, followed by black coffee - must wait one hour to eat. I usually get youngest going for the day when I am off. Then I make my list of what all I want to accomplish that day. Whatever I don't get done, gets put on tomorrow's list. I recently made out a "Plan for Living" I call it - a way to stay ahead of the blues while making some strides in my general health. Hoakey, but it works for me! I used to prioritize everyone else first, but nowadays I know that if momma gets started off on the wrong foot, the whole family follows...

  27. I make a pot of coffee, and while I wait for it, I go on AOL and read the day's news. Then I make my 20 oz cup, half coffee, half hot milk, and some toast. I pour the rest of the coffee into my carafe, and sit down at the computer again, to read my emails. Then I go on Facebook and see what people are doing. What I need to do is swap out the toast for something non-carb. Someday I'll do that, but unfortunately, habit is habit.

  31. My mornings have changed a lot since Toby's cancer treatment. I get up and let the dog out first thing, then he gets a milk bone to start his day off, then fill his water and food bowl. Then I get dressed and take Toby to IHOP every morning. He is stuck on eating an egg and cheese Senior omelette with grits and pancakes. He just can't seem to eat anything else without getting sick so it's off to IHOP we go. That's ALL he eats all day long, sigh. I get a pot of tea with honey and share one of his pancakes to keep the tab reasonable. So that's our morning. When I get back home I'll grab a bowl of cereal and check my emails.

  33. Oh gosh.... I am such a lazy thing in the morning. I didn't used to be this way, but age... well... you know. So, I get a cup of coffee with LOTS of flavored coffeemate in it, then get my pills/vitamins, eat a piece of toast, (no big breakfast for a couple of hours) and then go sip my coffee in front of my computer. Laze around for a couple of hours and then finally decide to shower and dress for the day. Mornings were not always this way. I used to have to be up and out the door to a job by 7AM. Those days are long gone THANK GOODNESS!

  35. I love that you have brought back Java Talk, Brenda, and I really loved reading the comments. Am I the only one who likes to sleep late? I stay up till about midnight and yet I need a lot of sleep, or at least indulge in it so I many not get up until 10:00 a.m. This is a luxury after having a career and then motherhood that had me out of bed at 5:00 a.m.!

I can't eat for at least 2 hours after waking~~~just no appetite. I have 2 cups of coffee although I'm replacing it with hot green tea lately...my body has just changed and I don't want something so strong as coffee, more something soothing like tea. I keep breakfast basic, maybe 1 scrambled egg and a piece of sausage. Protein. I briefly check my emails while the dogs get their fresh air in the backyard, I do a basic cleanup of the house, shower and I'm out the door about 1:00 for the afternoon filled with appointments, errands, shopping, visiting, whatever. I've never been a huge morning person and I like that I get up alone 5 days a week. As much as I love my guy, weekends throw of my lazy way of dong things!!! Ha!
