Day 2: First Closet Finished

This is where the pupsters spent their time while I was purging and decluttering the closet. See Charlie's tongue? Heavens, how could you miss it!

This is what you saw yesterday morning. I worked on and off until it was done. Just took a few hours really.

I hauled about 6 big black lawn bags of "stuff" to the corner dumpster. I used my vintage wagon from the patio to get the bags there, as they were heavy.

It isn't perfect. But it's good for now.

My yoga mat is there to the left with my rolled up towel. That's my stretching equipment I use twice per day.

In the plastic containers, I have lots of sewing things like thread and my little collection of pin cushions. Ribbon and laces. My sewing kit.

The many paintings and things I took off the walls are either in a plastic bin or just slipped in here and there.

I'm not crazy about the red bin filled with things I took off the walls, but it's okay for now. I need to decide what I will use in the future and what I will donate. I wasn't ready to do that yet.

I have various pairs of sneakers in the laundry tub.

The rest of my shoes are in boxes stacked high in the other closet. Though I never get to wear them, due to my ankle.

That closet is next on my list and just a few feet down from this one.

I don't have a ton of clothes. Clothes don't mean much to me.

Although I did make a stab at doing fashion posts, I'm sure you recall!

Sorry. I just couldn't get excited about clothes or fashion. It just isn't me.

And here are Charlie and Abi again. I think they were scared listening to all the noise. There were sounds of breaking glass once or twice.

So they were pressed close together to weather the storm!

I think you should give yourself a small gift once you finish a purging project. Mine was to sit with the pupsters and watch the new Tiny House shows on HGTV.

Did you get anything done yesterday?

  2. You have done a great job. You have certainly built a fire under me. My walk in closet is a major disaster area. Hoping to get started on that this week. Great post!

  3. Ha ha! Your before looks a lot like one of my closets! You did a great job of getting it into order. Looks like a nice sized closet with the side areas. This house I live in has those little narrow closets with sliding doors! How I'd love to have a walk - in. Oh, well! Happy New Year, Brenda.

    1. That's the way it is with older houses. I don't know how old yours is though.

  4. You emptied six bags of stuff from that one closet and it all went into the trash? Holy Hathor! Now I feel guilty about intending to begin deconstructing my Christmas tree and decorations yesterday and doing absolutely nothing, instead. I spent the day watching videos on YouTube and then the second season of Home Free episodes on Hulu. I see I will have to work on my motivation/ambition for 2017 :)

    1. Don't feel guilty! We do what we can when we can. Today I've done nothing on the second one.

  5. Nothing done yesterday, had Church, lunch, nap, then church again. But today! Look out! My craft room closet is in need of some serious attention. Can't wait. Cup of tea, old British tv series on and I'm off. Hope to get rid of some stuff, plus make it easer to get to projects I have started and plan to finish this year. That's my New Years goal....finish started projects. Plus read all the books I already own.

    1. Because I have little room for those kinds of things, at least they don't get too cluttered! Looking for the positive.

  7. I love the closet transformation! It looks so nice and organized. Great inspiration! My bedroom has a small walk-in closet that is a nightmare. I'm doing it little by little. Yesterday, I went through my clothes...

  10. Closet looks good and I think you do great with so little storage space available to you..

I started on the garage yesterday. I'll have to leave my car in the driveway so I can use that bay of the garage open to put every thing I'll be giving to the womens shelter. When I get it all out there I'll call and they can come and get it. Helps me declutter and will help many as they start their new life.
    Happy New Year

    1. One good thing about not having much space is that you can't put too many things in it.

  11. I like how you stored thing sin plastic bins. Now it will be easy for you to find what you are looking for. Did you by chance find the rest of the checked curtains?

I only have one closet in my little one bedroom apt. It is a slider closet with mirrored doors. It is good sized, and I use one side for clothing, and the other side for a combination linen/storage closet. I have bins stacked in the bottom, one holds summer clothes, one holds shoes, and two clear plastic ones holds the extra decor.
I should get rid of the extra decor, but so far have not been able to do so. But I did my purge also, and managed to fill a large box with clothing to get rid of.

  13. Come organize me! The dining table is piled high with Christmas stuff, and the guest room has all the stuff which has made it up then stairs. The hubs decided to "organize" the attic, thus provoking my wrath, because I had left containers and packing for the aforementioned right where I could find them! Today will tell the tale, if we are still speaking at the end of the day!

  14. I love the Tiny House shows!! I've been watching them for a couple of years now! Although I don't think I could live in the super tiny ones, I think 500 sq ft is a perfect size.

    1. I agree. I think I could live in one just under 400 square feet. I've heard that if they're under 400, you can just get a car license for them. Don't think you have to pay house taxes. But don't quote me on that.

  16. Wow, you really got to work! It looks like you decorated the closet in your favorite colors of red, yellow, blue and green. Your clothes and décor items all look really good together! I like the use of the plastic containers, and I need to get some more of those to replace the ugly cardboard boxes in our office. Thanks for the inspiration.

  17. You did a great job on your closet! Clothes and fashion don't mean that much to me either. I do like to look "nice" (not fancy though) when going out, though I feel I can do that on a low budget and wearing classic pieces over the years. You can always make an outfit look nicer with a scarf, of which I have plenty. And 99% of them were purchased at thrift stores! I do need a couple of new tops right now though but I don't like places like Kohls or Penneys where you know everyone will have the same top. I don't get to Goodwill that often anymore because I'm mostly staying out of there in order to not be tempted to bring more stuff into the house, so I think I might (and that's a strong might - not motivated just yet) go to the Ann Taylor Loft outlet. They have a decent selection and prices and their clothes fit me very well.

On a different subject, with the bags of stuff you hauled to the dumpster, wasn't it stuff that you could've donated instead...brought to Goodwill or Salvation Army, etc? Or, I know Purple Hearts and Vietnam Veterans will actually pick up stuff at your house. And you can even schedule pick-up online.

  18. Good job, Brenda!! I will tell you one thing I did because I see you have the same love of pillows that I do. I buy (or make) pillow covers that are the same size and just use the inserts from the old pillows. Some of my pillows actually have 2 or 3 covers zipped on top of each other. I did that when we were in a small place and it has worked out great for me. My daughter uses those vacuum bags and stores stuff under her bed that is seasonal and that has worked good for her, too.

Onward, my friend!! You are doing good. Oh- I did organize all my wrapping papers (Xmas and other gift wrap) today and sorted through my 'embellishments'. I have put off doing that for about 4 or 5 years. It was a 4 hour job and I have a bag for GW and a bag that is just junk. xo Diana

    I love organized spaces.
have you ever read Courtney Carver's blog? 'be more with less' ... it's very inspiring and wonderful. I think you'd like it on this new journey you're on!
your closet looks wonderful. I like the pillows across the top. I have two small closets and neither one has shelves except for two small ones at the very top. I store very little.

  22. Great job Brenda and pupsters!! They were cheering you on I am sure! I did basically nothing yesterday. Well, I did finish up the kids clothes for them (son and daughter in law were here) I had to add some Clorax to their towels and I did three loads. They would have put all of them in my washer at the same time if they could fit!! I just had to get some of their things light again And they only had a couple of days here before headed to Orlando with her side of family. Since we celebrated Christmas with them and my daughter and her husband then New Years my butt was dragging!! I did accomplish some house straightening like dishes and their clothes so not a complete failure!! Rest of day I rested after they left. Just not use to being up past midnight whether long three a.m. Much better today. Tree is down and most everything is put away plus I went out to subdivision and showed our model home to a couple that was over here from other side of town. You do what you have to do!! Hopefully more done tomorrow after our team meeting at the office. Hope that you have a wonderful week!! Give the pugsters a hug for me!

I scored three hurricane lamps for the cottage at a local thrift store yesterday - I'm thrilled. Plus I did a solid workout and AlMOST stuck to my diet. :-)

  25. Great job of organizing Brenda! I have several closets that really need a good purging, cleaning and straightening. Yesterday, I went to Dillards and bought a new pair of leggings and that was the extent of my day. Now that the holidays are over, I need to get busy purging and cleaning and you have given me just the purge I need!!

  26. Amazing transformation! I notice your plastic bins are with lids. One thing you might consider that changed my world. Some years ago I purchased three different sizes of the three-drawer plastic storage units that are pull-out drawers. These hold so many things and you have easy and quick access to it all.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I also love using the storage units with drawers. I keep one under the bathroom vanity sink area for makeup and hair tools, and one in my clothes closet where I keep my dog's items in one drawer, hats, gloves and scarves in another, and slips, cami's and other personal items in the third.
