Shelves Go Out, Lights Come In

I made the decision to give my brown bookshelves to the maintenance man, and to order standing lamps to go in that spot in their place.

I had read most of the books.

I kept the books I had not yet read, along with a few decorating, gardening, and resource books I wanted to keep. The remaining books are stacked in two spots I'll show at a later time.

My daughter came and got the books. She had a place she wanted to take them. The ones she didn't want to keep anyway.

I spent last weekend and beginning of the week looking online at standing lamps. But I kept coming back to the ones you see here.

First, they were the best price at $50+ at Joss & Main. Second, they fit in with the look of the end tables. The industrial, schoolhouse restoration look.

I was surprised at how heavy the bottoms were when I was putting the two lamps together Friday evening. I could barely pick them up.

I really needed more light in my living room. But the end tables really aren't big enough to put table lamps on, since I work from the couch and my laptop sits there day in and day out.

No bottles remain in the boxes. I learned my lesson and took the vintage bottles and moved them before more got broken.

I put them here next to the chair, gathered in this galvanized tray I found last year at the antique mall for a couple of bucks.

While I was at it, I changed up the coffee table a bit.

Forgive the dark pics. There isn't a hint of sun in the sky today.

And since we all know that the pretty pillows were just for show because the dogs knock them to the floor, above is a reality shot.

The dogs reign. Which means what they love is on this couch all the time.

Isn't that right, pupsters? It's all about what you want, because your mama wants you to be happy pupsters.

I was asked by a reader for a link to the lamps. Here it is.

  1. Removing the shelves makes the room look so much brighter! I love the lamps. No sunshine here either and it's making me feel down in the dumps for some reason. s

  2. Of course it is all about the pups! I never tire of seeing their cute faces. I'm sure they get kissed a LOT!

I like how things are shaping up in your cute little apartment. You've made it your own.

  3. I decided I just have to stay off that step ladder. It really adds to the ankle problem. And so I've eliminated one of the few reasons I have to get up on it, by not having tall bookshelves to dust.

  4. Your new lamps look great. And I love your vintage bottles in the metal tray.

You are brave getting rid of your bookcases! I'd be thinking that I need all the storage I can get.

    1. Thing about it is though, the more storage space I have, the more I bring in or put out! And that's more for me to dust.

    1. I know. I walked around looking for a spot. The bookshelves started out in the bedroom. But I've got it chocked full of stuff and already need to purge more in there.

  9. This is my first comment to your blog and I'm making it because I absolutely LOVE this! Also, after browsing what seems like a kazillion blogs in the last few years, yours has become the only one I actually read in it's entirety every single post. You are a beautiful soul and I just adore how you make your life so enriching and beautiful for YOU, and no one else! You are a very talented writer and decorator and this new look ties every room together PERFECTLY!! Oh, Brenda...you are a VERY special woman, indeed! And not only are you a survivor, you are a teacher and leader, and I am guessing that has never been your intent, but it surely is YOUR gift!

  10. Is it wallpaper or paneling on your wall that looks like whitewashed boards? Or did you really put boards up there? It's beautiful. I also think the room looks much brighter without the book shelves. Changing things up gives such a lift.

    1. That is removable wallpaper I was sent last year free to review. At the ends is bead board because I messed up with the wallpaper and didn't end up having enough. That was when Israel was here to help me. He has recently split with his wife and moved to San Antonio where one of his brothers live.

  12. I love the look, lamps and of course your fur babies. Do you have the capability on your phone or camera to do panorama or video? Would love to see your entire space at one time. Might give your readers a real sense of your space. You keep talking about small spaces but it seems a nice size. I guess it has to do with the way you layer and decorate your space. Still jealous of your dishes!

    1. No, I don't. I got rid of my cell phone coverage because it was more than I could afford right now. Sorry! I'll try again with my wide angle lens. Have tried that before, but pics didn't come out so good.

    1. I've been outdoors picking up leaves and bagging them since I can't blow them out the gate. I will ask the maintenance man, as I did Friday, to carry them down the block to the trash. Too heavy for me.

  14. I love the new look of your room--especially the wallpaper. Even on an overcast day, it looks bright and cheerful. I guess dogs like to decorate too--everything on the floor. I'm having a much easier time viewing your blog now and have no trouble with your Comments section. I enjoy reading it every day---thank you for being there for us.

  16. Your room looks so pretty! I love the first pic and those pretty floor lamps you have on each side of the sofa. I have the same problem with my sofa. The pillows get tossed to the floor by my dog and usually there is a throw strewn about there as well. That's life.

  17. That looks really great, Brenda. I think you made a wonderful choice with the lamps. I am FINALLY giving up some of my books, too, although some of them will be with me forever, I think...others can go on for someone else to enjoy. Love those lamps! xo Diana

  20. Brenda, there is so much eye candy in your little living room! I love it! The new lamps are just right, too. And the galvanized tray for cheap--do you know how much those sell for in the home decorating stores?? What luck you found one for so little money. You have a great decorating sense. It makes me think again that perhaps I could have a cool small apartment and get rid of this house that is too full and needs a ton of work. The way you've decorated your modest space encourages me anyway.

  23. I love the whole look you're going for, my friend. It suits you :) The lamps are great too!

And yes, it is all about our babies, isn't it? Bubba just sits on whatever pillow there is and Mini pushes them off lol I guess both of us can just refer to them as pretty picture pillows ;)
