Daily Entertainment & Another Trip To Trader Joe's

Oh my goodness! I had no idea how much I was missing out on on my patio. There is constant entertainment out there!
I loved my gazebo. I truly did.

But you know what? I like this better!

I've learned in life that when you lose one thing, it is important to find gratitude for what you still have. And I have squirrels and birds galore!

Moving that bird bath has brought all this into focus. The birds are all over the place. At the bird bath. Hopping on the furniture and decor.

The squirrels are into mischief and I'm getting great photos of them and enjoying their antics.

I got the bird bath last year after I got the gazebo. So I've never seen all this action before. Making up for it now!

And speaking of the bird bath, I wanted you to know that it is solar. So when there is sun, the fountain is running.

I went to Trader Joe's yesterday morning right when they opened, because today is to be a hot one. I had not shopped since my last visit there a week from last Monday.

While I was shopping, a man came up to me and asked if I was finding everything. Come to find out, he is the owner of this particular Trader Joe's.

He said he was from Chicago. So I asked him what brought him to Tulsa. He said he wanted his own store.

He gave me a free Trader Joe's grocery bag, and I bought a few more.

My freezer, which is small, was fairly empty before I did my shopping. Now it is full.

The owner (I forgot to get his name) showed me all his favorite things, at my insistence. And explained that what I didn't like to bring back for a full refund. They are so great about that!

Now I have all these new-to-me foods to try out. And I've been taking all your suggestions and buying foods that you told me that you like from there as well.

Those ginger snaps are delicious!

I even bought soy corn dogs. I haven't had a corn dog in many years. Probably not since my kids were little. And it certainly wasn't soy!

I got home with three very full sacks of groceries for under $100. Now that wouldn't happen at the local grocery store.

Trader Joe's is my new favorite store.

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

  1. Good morning Brenda, I just love reading your daily happenings. I love Trader Joe's but we do not have any near by. The closest one is two hours away.😕 So I rarely get to go. But I do enjoy it when I go. I love all your plants and yard decor. That blue chicken is so cute. Where ever did you find it? I do hope you stay cool today and enjoy your day. Keep on writing!

    1. The blue rooster was one of my finds at Jenks River City Trading Center, my favorite antique mall. It was $15.

  2. When you had to get rid of your gazebo I felt badly, but now I see there was no need. You have built in free entertainment now.

I went to an IGA yesterday to get some onions. Turns out that particular store is closing and everything was 45% off. Walked out with two shopping carts of staples but no onions. (No produce or fresh meat left). Trader Joe's isn't close by, and I miss it, but it will be when we move. Love their nut selection and great prices!

    1. Any closer to finding a new home? I don't think I'd want to be out in the boonies and not close to stores. Especially since I don't carry a cell phone.

  3. I'm so glad you are rediscovering your patio! I have one set of squirrels in my front yard and another set in my backyard and I get so much enjoyment out of watching them. They are so used to me that they don't even run when I go in the yard! Enjoy your free show!!

    1. Well, like the old saying: a door closes, a window opens. My patio no longer has a gazebo. But I now have a better view of nature.

  5. What a great shot of the squirrel, such a beauty! My husband was thinking that when we only have a patio we won't see many birds and squirrels but I think if we provide water they will come.
Love the quote by Oprah. This one just popped up in my e mail this morning which is similar, 'The standard of success in life isn't the things. It isn't the money or the stuff - it is absolutely the amount of joy we feel' Abraham I see now Brenda that you have a solar fountain, did it come with the bird bath? Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Great quote! Are there trees where you're moving? Squirrels and birds are drawn to trees. So if you trees and water, they will come. Yes, the solar part came with the fountain. Fits down in a hole.

  7. So glad you are enjoying your patio again and those squirrels look like they would be fun to watch as well as the birds. Trader Joe's is a great place to shop, one of my favorites too.

  8. Hi Brenda! We have been talking about taking a day trip to see the Flea Market in Jenks and shopping for groceries at Trader Joes. I have never been to one and would love to see different things (all we have here in the joplin area is walmart (x4), aldis (x2), and rameys (x3) (also known as price cutter and cash saver). Our kids used to live in Broken Arrow and we loved their Reasors store too. I sure miss your Blog tips, any chance of posting some ideas from time to time?

  9. Trader Joe's is a privately held company and does not franchise. The owner of Trader Joe's is a family trust held by the Albrecht family of Germany who also own Aldi. One of the Albrecht brother's purchased Trader Joe's in 1979.

  10. I love Trader Joe's too, just wish it wasn't 30 minutes away from where we live now. The staff is some of the friendliest anywhere. You'll have to tell us which products you bought are your favorite when you try them.

I love your reminders to us to open our eyes and look at all the nature around us. Over the years there have been some excellent lessons here. Just came from Melanie's where their garden along the neighbor's privacy fence was inspired by something you wrote!

    Happy Memorial Day weekend,

  14. Isn't it funny how sometimes when we lose something and we're upset--then it is replaced with something better. My favorite quote is:
"If you're not happy with what you have, why would you think more would make you happy?"

  16. My husband just hung up our hummingbird feeder. It might be too late to get their attention but maybe they will see it. Now we are off to find a birdbath. Reading about your backyard visitors has gotten me in the mood to get some things done around here to attract more birds. (We don't have to worry about attracting squirrels -- they are running around everywhere.) I'm glad you are getting so much fun out of your patio now.

  17. I like Trader Joe's chicken pot stickers, or maybe they call them dumplings. I also like their Samosa, so similar to Indian restaurants, but tiny, so not a lot of calories. I also like their balsamic vinegar. Their frozen vegetable mixes are pretty good too.

I really love your solar bird bath. What a great idea!

  18. No Trader Joes around here but plenty of squirrels and birds..I was just watching a robin splashing around in my bird bath not too long ago and enjoying her :) Love your cute little squirrel:)

  19. It sounds like you had a fruitful trip to Trader Joes, I love visiting there, although I always buy way too much stuff.

This quote is beautiful as are your squirrel and flower photos. I holt that you have a wonderful weekend.

  20. love the squirrel. We used to have a lot in our backyard. If you put out a handful of peanuts in the shell every day or so you will see lots of lovely things.

  21. Your solar bird bath interests me. Could you tell me where I could find one? I've not heard of one before,

We don't have a Trader Joe's here. We now have a Whole Foods Market that just moved into the area last summer and virtually closed down our little local food coop. I haven't been able to allow myself to shop there. I don't know if they are cheaper than the Kroger store that I shop at most of the time. That'd be nice if they were.

I'm glad you are enjoying your patio so much even without your gazebo. Watching the birds and squirrels is one of my favorite things when I have my bird feeders out on the deck off my dining area. Right now I'm looking for a new bird feeder, so not much activity out there. I'm anxious to get a new feeder up. Just have to find one that I like and that fits my area. I designed one made from wood with a large tray around it but I'm not able to use the kind of power tools it would require to make it even though I have lots of wood and materials in my garage. I might try it anyway just with ordinary tools--or maybe glue!

This was a fun post to read and the photos are great. Looking forward to the next one!
