My New Yellow Rose Painting

My new painting came. I was really on the fence about this one.

I actually, less than 24 hours after ordering it from Wayfair, called and cancelled it.
However, somehow it shipped anyway. I was planning to ship it back.

But then it came, and I thought it was the other painting I'd ordered. So I opened it. And it was the yellow rose painting.

As you know, my plan was to put this painting over the couch.

But after much deliberation, it seemed to me that it was too tall to go over the couch. And that I needed a horizontal painting instead. Which is what I ordered next.

So then it occurred to me to try it in the dining space, which is just down from the living space. And I rather liked it there.

I want to know what you think. Is it too big for this area?

I can't get a good pic to show you better than these, because of the ability to get a decent photo within the space constraints.

It is a very pretty painting on canvas, I think. I do love yellow roses. They are my favorite.

Here's one of my outdoor yellow roses yesterday.

The other one should come tomorrow I believe. So then I'll show you that one.

And I'll tell you what compelled me to go ahead and order it. Which is a whole other story on shopping with Wayfair.

Thoughts? What do you think of this yellow rose painting in the dining area?

  1. When it comes to art, go big or go home. Your painting is not too big. It looks great!
I think you should put one of your yellow roses in a vase under it, so you get the perfume along with the painting.

  3. its a really pretty painting. it looks like it is scaled to the wall and works. who cares what we think. what about what you think?

  4. Hi. I really like the artwork, as well as where you have hung it. The yellow, red, and blue tones in the painting go well with the colors in the dining room. The vase of flowers is very realistic -- I love the detail on the glass vase -- while the muted background gives the piece a rather dreamy feel. The best part is how the painting has a bit of trompe l'oeil to it, with the roses falling over the edge of the table in the painting looking like they literally are coming out of the canvas and into your room. I would enjoy looking at this painting throughout the day. I hope you are pleased with it.

yellow roses go well with the yellow table, and I like how there is a bit of trompe l'oeil to the painting, in that the roses falling over the edge of the table in the painting look like they literally are coming out of the canvas and hanging down over your table.

  8. I think it looks lovely there. Not to big at all.

  10. I think it is pretty there. I have gotten rid of several of the smaller country pictures that I had on our living room wall too. I found a beautiful pair of flowered pictures at a junk shop we stopped at. they were quite big and then I did add some smaller things around them. But, they all stayed in the flower line. I'll see if I can send you some of my pictures to your email. Can't wait to see the other picture that you are getting. Stay cool & take care..

  11. I absolutely love this painting Brenda and no it is not too big for your dining area. I don't like small pictures, although they do have their place. It is so different with the silver vase and the buildings in the background. I have often thought of buying things from Wayfair but never have. I look forward to your experience.

  14. I think it's pretty but it seems a tad large to me. Hard to tell from photos. I tried several paintings above my couch before finding the right one. I do love yellow roses!

  15. I think it is beautiful! That said, there is only one thing of any importance.
Do you like it there? Yes? Then that is where it belongs. No? It is too big.

  16. Hello Brenda;
I like the painting and really like your placement of it. In fact I am so inspired that I will look at Wayfair for paintings, have not shopped at Wayfair before, thank you for the good advice. Kate

  17. I think it is absolutely beautiful and if it were mine I know how happy it would make me feel every time I looked at it. It has a very calm, serene vibe to it and looks like something you would see in a cottage-style home. I think you posted earlier that is the look you would like to incorporate into your space and this one definitely is a step in that direction. I don't think it is too big for your dining space because you have a tall hutch which I think balances it. The only thing I would do is lower it to just above the chair rail. I have 2 very large mirrors in my dining space and they are about an inch above the chair rail and look just fine. Either way it is beautiful right where you have it and I think you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I am one of those people who spend lot of time in my homeso I think we need to have things in it that bring us enjoyment and they don't always have to "fit in" perfectly. I read a quote from designer Emily Henderson that has really stuck with me and that is: "Your home does not have to be perfect." I am seriously considering ordering this myself and I absolutely don't need it nor does it go with my décor, that's how beautiful I think it is! I can't wait to see the other one you ordered.

    1. You're probably right about lowering it.

  18. I am not drawn to floral paintings but I really like this one in your dinning room.

  19. With the leaves up on your table it fits perfectly. I really like it there. Yellow roses are so cheerful.

  20. I like this painting and I don't think it's too big; however, I do think the painting itself is a bit too formal. It doesn't seem to "flow" with your other decor. That's just my opinion and really, it doesn't matter! ;-) What do YOU think? If you love it and think it goes well in that space, that's all that matters. As we all know, we decorate with what we love.

  21. Brenda, you have a good eye for decorating. Have confidence in yourself, in your experience. We are not there and cannot see the true picture if it is too high or low.
It is a beautiful picture and looks great right where it is. But if you want to move it up or down, do it because you truly feel it needs to be moved.
    Great post. Keep em comin!!

  22. it's beautiful.
I think in small spaces especially that large paintings actually make a space larger and more impressive. less cluttered feeling than lots of little things on the walls. it's striking!
looking forward to seeing the next one!

  23. I too think it's absolutely beautiful! It just pulls the blues, greens and yellows from that area so very well. Truth be told, I gasped. It's very beautiful. I say keep it!

  24. I've learned one thing from reading all the decorating books. I have a habit of clustering too many small things in an area and sometimes that's ok. I call them my "vignettes". Sometimes one big beautiful object stands alone and your yellow roses are definitely one example of that. I agree that you need to lower it a little. Another decorating tip that I learned. Remember those pictures from historic homes or if you go on a tour...huge portraits are hung from way up at the ceiling. That was then and now it's good to have it at eye level. Also, mirroring the painting with a vase of your yellow roses would be beautiful. I did that one time with a gorgeous flower print and used silk flowers to copy. I loved it.

  25. I L.O.V.E the painting and I LOVE the placement. It belongs there.

  26. Hello there! I am a new reader of your blog and enjoy what you share here. The yellow rose painting ordering glitch may turn out to be a happy accident. My first thought is that it looks great in that space above your yellow table. I'd add more color to the table top for added interest and to connect the painting to the table top. You'll know in a few days if this is a keeper. I like it.

  27. Beautiful picture. The vase is so full of the giant blooms, they literally spill out on the table. I can almost smell their sweet fragrance. Excellent choice and lovely placement. TWO THUMBS UP!

  28. Lovely...I too, would move it down a little bit, but otherwise it is PERFECT!!!!!

  29. Here are my 2-bits: Love the painting, it is not too big, do not lower it. Instead put something tall on your table that comes up high enough to slightly come into the picture, like some wild grasses or a few small branches in a container or a large, tall, heavy vase or bottle...

If, on the other hand, you really want to use it over your couch, add two smaller, similar-sized pictures to the right of it, one over the other, so that together they balance the roses picture, then add a tall piece of something between the roses picture and the set of smaller pics, like a long skinny piece of wrought iron decor.

  30. I think it is perfect where it is! Beautiful painting.

  31. Oh Brenda!! It is gorgeous. And I, like all the others, love where it is. and the colors are wonderful with everything else that is in your room.

  32. I love the painting-colors are so relaxing! Definitely not too big in my opinion.

  33. I think it is gorgeous and like it right where it is!

  34. Hi Brenda: I've hung a large painting over my round kitchen table, too. I like the scale and the subject of yours. I think a large painting can feel like a window, and this is a view of roses you'll never have to prune or feed or deadhead. I'm short (5'1",) so I like to hang pictures lower than others may find attractive. I might even hang yours about 2 inches lower, but that's just me. In any case, enjoy it.

  35. Go big or go home! It looks GREAT!

  36. I love the painting, and I think it is just fine as it is. Put some real yellow roses in a vase below and it will be perfect.

  37. It's a lovely painting with pretty, soft colors. Many people choose paintings that are too little and that makes it look busy/busy/busy. If you lower it, make sure you still have room for things on the table....but I think it looks nice as is.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It is very pretty Brenda. I am in need of some new art, are you pleased with the workmanship?
    Thank you,
    Jemma

  39. It really is, of course, what you think...but I love the large scale size...it makes a statement...it stops you with its size and then pulls you in with its soft colors and subject. Yes, I like it...and I think you like it too. :)

  40. Oops, I think I sent your a message instead of making a blog comment... now what is the matter with me? LOL Love the painting and where it is hanging. Don't change a thing!

  41. Excellent choice for the pretty picture & where you chose to place it. I have several pictures I need to decide where to hang them. I'm waiting for inspiration!

  42. Gorgeous! I think it's perfect where it is.. pulls out the blue from your hutch.. and when it's something you love (Yellow roses) it makes it even better! I love the placement where it is, but lower is OK too... eye level is about right and looks like that's where you've placed it! Every time you walk into that room, you will love it! Marilyn

  44. It's really pretty and I think it looks great in your dining area! I love yellow roses!

  45. Several people have said some of the same things I was thinking. First of all the style of the painting does not seem like something you would choose (compared to other items in your home). Second, it does seem a bit large but that might change if you lowered it. Third, it does match the color of the table well and I would leave the table leaves up to help balance the space if you decide to keep the picture.

I do think it is a pretty picture. Above all, and the final most important thing is, it is your home and if you like the picture in that spot, you keep the darn thing and enjoy it!! When we live alone we don't need to worry about what others think - they don't live there!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love it! The only thing that really matters is whether or not you love it! :)

  47. I think the painting is perfect. I love it! My friend has encouraged me to change out all the small scale pictures and knick knacks that tend to make my place look busy and well, "granny" for lack of a better word and use less but larger scale items. I'm really liking the way it looks.
There is something particularly calming and restful about your picture. I could easily see it in my bedroom.

  48. First of all, I love the painting. Yellow roses are my favorite as well. And secondly, I love your placement of the painting. It wakes up that little space and adds height to the space. It's a keeper for sure.

  49. I think it looks terrific there,it makes the yellow table pop.
And I'm not a rose fan!
All that matters is if you're happy with it,so enjoy!!!!

  50. Just live with it there for a while and then you'll know whether you like it over the table. Color-wise it's complimentary to the table and I think I would say it's fine where it is if you like it there.

I'll be interested to see the other painting when it comes.

    ReplyDelete
  51. P.S. I meant to add that I think you really should bring in one of your yellow roses for the table and to compliment the painting.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ok, here's my 2 cents. I think it is a beautiful painting. Whether I'd love it enough to keep...it is hard to tell from just a photo. I have 2 things I always tell my daughter when she asks for advice. If it is a Wow, buy it. And if you have doubt...do without.

  53. Absolutely love it!! Beautiful colors also match your dish cabinet. And doesn't it just say "happy". Perfect Brenda.

  54. Brenda, I like it where you put it. I love yellow roses (and yellow - I've had a butter yellow kitchen my entire adult life) and they really suit your cozy little house!
