Labor Day Here In Tulsa

It's a quiet weekend here. Quite hot and no rain in sight. As we glide into September, fall weather is but a dream.

I went out with my daughter and Andrew on Saturday. She and I later went to lunch and to roam around a bit, while Andrew spent time with his dad.

I'm still on the fence about dragging out my big box of fall decor. Part of me wants to. But then once I sit and think about it awhile, I don't do it.

Maybe I will, maybe I won't. It's just too hot right now to think about it.

Yesterday when I turned my Breville Smart oven on, I couldn't change the setting dial. I can cook on Bake. But it won't switch from Bake to something else.

I'm wondering if my moving it around recently did something to it?

I have gotten three and a half years out of it. And I use it most every day. So that's well over 1000 days of use.

I may get another one before long. Not sure yet. Since I don't have a stove, this is a more crucial decision should it come to the point that I can't use it.

But then if I get another one at some point, my next thought is: What do I do with this one?

I have surely found ways to make my little kitchen work for me without missing the stove. So I think I've got some time with this one yet.

What are you doing this Labor Day weekend?

  1. Sorry about your little oven, Brenda. Can you find someplace that repairs them, because it sounds like something "fixable". Might be cheaper than purchasing a new one.

    1. I'll call around. But I think it's something with the computer maybe.

  2. Hi Brenda! Hot here in NE Kansas today but then forecast to cool down. I always remind myself that Fall is a season which begins on September 21 and not a moment before, even though stores, Pinterest, and school buses on the roads would have us believe otherwise! This allows me not to beat myself up about decorating too soon.

  3. Happy Labor Day! You could do a google search to trouble shoot the Breville oven issue. If you do get another one Williams Sonoma has lots of Breville sales so be sure to look out for them. Here is a sale for the compact smart oven, not sure if this is what you have, http://shopstyle.it/l/gEFa. IT is on sale for $179 which is 100 off.

Perhaps you do not have to dig all of your Fall stuff out but maybe just a few of your favorite things! Have a great day!

    1. I'll check that out. But this is a knob that does the settings and is computerized.

  4. Trying to enjoy some family time today. Ashleigh is flying back to Cali tonight and I hope to see the Grands later this afternoon. I want to get a Breville oven but since I do have a stove it's not top of my list. Ashleigh loves hers!!

  5. Can you remove the knobs on your Breville? Just saying. I have an antique stove & the thermostat was stuck. I pulled it off & buffed the parts & then I could turn it. Good luck with it.
I love how you write. I always feel like I'm right there listening to you. Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us. Sandy

    1. No, that wouldn't work. It is a kind of computerized knob.

  6. It's too hot here to do anything. We are breaking heat records in Oregon and the smoke is horrible outside. Sunrise and sunset are blood red, and the moon is also red in the sky. It's spooky! I did wash a few windows yesterday (reminding myself that we are going for better, not perfect) and today I think I'm going to stay inside and sew. I also need to make lunches for the week. So a quiet day being thankful that my house is not near the wildfires and that me and the pets are safe.

  7. Hi Brenda, sorry your oven is playing up. I would look on google to see if I could find out what the problem is first before you buy a new one.
I talked to my sister via skype for 2 1/2 hours this morning as I do every week as she is in England.
I love skype, we can see each other and show each other our good buys. Might make a trip to Value Village as they are open today, don't know if you have these stores in USA but they are like a Goodwill store. I love poking around to see what I can find. Last time I was there I bought a velvet dress and coat set, it is very plain, not showy at all, I may wear it in the colder months. I also look for books instead of paying full price for new ones.

  8. We don't have fall until some time in Oct. Sometimes even Nov is pretty mild. So why beat yourself up about decorating. You will know when it is time. And that way you will enjoy every minute of the decorations.

  9. Happy Labor Day Brenda! I don't post often but I just wanted to pop in and say hello. I love your blog and even go back to the older posts in an effort to "catch up" a little better. (I've been following for about a year) I love the way you write so straight forward and honest - it is always so easy to relate to what you are saying. I retired a couple of years ago and I don't go out a lot so it is so nice to read your blog and simply feel like I am visiting with a friend! Abi and Charlie are so sweet and I do understand how they are your children. I have two cats that are my kids now that the human kids are grown!

Good luck with the Breville - I know you use it a lot. As far as Fall decorations go, I think you should just do what you feel like because you know we will be putting winter and Christmas out soon. They rush the holidays so much now that I've always said I was just going to put up a tree, decorate it with jack-o-lanterns and put a turkey on top!

It may be Labor Day but it's just another day to me so I'm going to try and get a closet cleaned out - we'll see how far I get but the cats will have fun when I start dragging things out of it!

    Have a good week Brenda!

  10. Hi Brenda, I have many wonderful memories of Tulsa in the summer time. My maternal grandparents lived there for many years and my mother grew up and married in Tulsa. My parents moved to the state of Washington then to northern British Columbia. Thankfully we did get to visit Tulsa every few years. My most vivid memory is probably the hot weather!
I have resigned from Foster Parenting, I was just too exhausted to carry on. But I loved every little tyke that came my way, for however long I had them. My husband and I have sold our large city home and are moving to the country into a smaller home.
So...I have spent most of this weekend packing!

    2. Thank you, Brenda, that means a lot to me coming from you. I do still get to see many of the children that I cared for, most of them don't have a grandma and I am still 'nana' to them. That makes me very happy. :)

  11. I love fall , so as soon as it is Sept. 1 out comes the fall decorations. We just returned from vacation on Aug 26, with tons of laundry to do and things to catch up with, I still pulled out my decorations and have it all done. As another mentioned, maybe just get out a few things.

  12. Hi Brenda~

Labor Day for me is the end of summer . . . but I will wait a while to drag out my box of fall decorations as well, not quite ready. My children are coming over, because they live close. We always do smoked ribs, the kids bring the sides. It's a fun get together for the end of the season.

Love the photo of the squirrel checking out the frog, cute!

So sorry about your Breville. I wonder if there is someone who can take a look at it, maybe it can be fixed and save the expense of purchasing a new one.

    Have a great day!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  13. LABOR DAY TO ME MEANS THAT MY CROCUS SHOULD BE COMING UP SOON. I LIKE BEING ABLE TO SAY "I GROW THE WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE SPICE". EACH FLOWER YIELDS 3 THREAD OF SAFFRON.
IT TAKES ABOUT 14,000 STIGMAS (the little red threads) TO EQUAL ONE OUNCE. IT HAS TO BE HAND PICKED.
I PLANTED 12 BULBS SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND THEY HAVE MULTIPLED TO ABOUT 50, LOSING SOME TO MOLES EVERY YEAR. I USE THE SAFFRON TO FLAVOR SOUPS, STEWS AND IT ADDS BEAUTIFUL COLOR TO RICE DISHES.
LOOKING FORWARD TO COOLER WEATHER, BEING ABLE TO GET OUTSIDE MORE.

  14. Hot here in lower mid-Michigan, too. But it's supposed to rain this evening and be cooler--in 70's tomorrow. I hope it cools down as I still have a lot of yard work I'd like to get done this week.

I'm not at all familiar with the type of oven you use. It's different from a toaster oven which I have and use in place of a microwave, right? It's a drag when things we use all the time don't work. I hope maybe you can get it fixed. Usually costs more than to buy new these days, though. Our throw-away culture irks me no end.

It's been a pretty usual weekend and Labor Day for me. My twin grandsons will be coming back to my house from staying at their dad's all summer. They start school tomorrow and I'm hoping they like it as they have had a hard time adjusting to school from Headstart when they were four and then last year at a Montessori kindergarten. I'm just hoping I don't end up walking over to the school to get them because they are mis-behaving repeatedly. I think the staff at this new neighborhood school where my girls went is more on top of things than last year's were. It' a different school system so I have high hopes. We'll see.

    1. Seems many, or so I've read, replace their regular ovens with these counter top ones like I have.

  15. Most problems with things that are computerized can be fixed a simple way, Brenda. Pull out the plug from the wall socket, wait a couple minutes, then plug it back in. Your oven will no doubt re-program itself and once more work correctly again.

  16. OH I hope that the Breville decides to work again :)

Just a bit of time with family / nothing major here :) A bit of time with the middle son and grands down the street and the youngest and his dog here for the weekend :)

  17. It stinks when appliances start to get wonky like that, they are so expensive to replace. Since you don't have a stove I don't guess you'll have much choice, though, when the time comes!
