  1. I bought some mums last week to replace some of the pansies that had seen better days. The yellow mums look so happy when I glance outside my window, like a spot of sunshine!

  2. I knew you were a gal after my own heart! I love my rocks, too, and when I think about selling my house and moving I think about taking them all with me! My flower beds will look odd without the rocks to edge them, but I don't care. Some of those rocks, in fact, the majority of them, came from my dad's farm so they have meaning for me that no one else would appreciate. But what if I move to some place where I only have a small stoop or just a balcony (yuk)?? Anyway, let's hear it for ROCKS!

My petunias are looking pretty pooped, too. I should probably tear them out and replace them with mums but I can't quite let them go yet. I have been collecting the seeds from them and hopefully will start some the first of the new year. Some of the ones I had planted in Spring of 2016 came up voluntarily this year having dropped their seeds before I dug them out.

The picture you've posted in this post of the yellow rose is so gorgeous. I have been trying to grow roses for several years and I don't have much success. Something eats the leaves and I can't figure out exactly what it is. I get only one or two roses from each bush per year. I love them so much and so it's very disappointing. I do keep them watered but I think maybe I need to feed them more. Any advice is welcome!

Happy Labor Day, Brenda. Don't "labor" too much!

  3. Do you soak your morning glory seeds to soften them and nick their seed coats before planting them? That's what I do. I have mixed luck with them. Some years I have luxuriant vines, and other years not so much.

  4. I have a pale yellow rose bush just like that! It is about 4 years old now and does the same..it has been putting out roses in fits and starts all through the summer.

Weather here has been confusing in August ( No complaints though! 🙂 Two cool spells in August had a June-blooming daylily blooming again 🙂

  5. Love your patio container gardens – thanks so much for sharing, Brenda :> Have moved rocks, too NJ —-> Kentucky —-> Virginia ahhh, my rocks have a sweet story on why they've moved along with me !

  6. We've been having so much heat I think my one rose bush is fried. I don't do well with roses. My sedum autumn joy that I learned about from you is beautiful. It's supposed to cool down a little. It gets very scary this time of year with heat and fires.

  7. I am still watering as my container garden it still flourishing and I am still getting tomatoes. Your summer was much hotter than mine. It has cooled down here and I am looking forward to a sunny week in the 70s. Perfect weather. xo Laura

  8. YOUR YELLOW ROSE IS BEAUTIFUL, DOES IT HAVE A GOOD SCENT ? I LOVE ROSES, BUT THEY MUST BE FRAGRANT TO FIND A HOME IN MY FLOWERBEDS. I HAVE ONE BEAUTIFUL, VERY FRAGRANT PINK ONE THAT THE FORMER RESIDENT PLANTED WHEN SHE MOVED IN HERE IN 1979. I CALL IT THE ALMA ROSE IN HER HONOR.
YES, I TOO AM PARTIAL TO ROCKS. I HAVE 3 PIECES OF PETRIFIED WOOD THAT I HAVE HAULED WITH ME FROM TEXAS, THEN OKLAHOMA AND NOW HERE IN KANSAS.THEY ADD SHAPE AND TEXTURE TO THE BEDS, I HAVE A BIG PIECE OF BLACK, PINK AND WHITE GRANITE FROM SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS ALSO.
YOUR PATIO IS STILL LOVELY, I ENJOY SEEING THE CHANGES.

  9. Years ago my late father-in-law was talking about a little rock wall he had built. "It's hard to find good rocks," he said. "If you find them, hold on to them." We thought that was so silly because rocks seemed to be everywhere. But not GOOD rocks, we came to find out. Not all rocks are created equal. We made the mistake of leaving some favorite rocks behind a couple of moves ago and it's taking time to come up with some more good ones. We have just a few flowers here and there right now. The butterfly bushes are making another little burst of blooms which is pretty. Thanks for the lovely photos.

  10. We still have some flowers but the roses aren't doing as well. Of course deer munching on the rose bushes doesn't help. I'll add some colorful mums soon. The temps have fallen a bit and I can start to feel a bit of Fall in the air! I'm ready I think.

  11. I love your patio Brenda, I just hope I can make mine next year as beautiful and varied. All I brought with me from my last house was a young fur tree! It is 2 years old, it was a freebie from a nursery where I used to buy plants. I couldn't bear to leave it, it is now about 2 feet tall, heaven knows what I will do with it when it outgrows pots! Today I am quite excited because I am going to Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary. You may have heard of the famous Esther Wonder Pig who was thought to be a mini pig but turned out to be a full grown 500lb+ pig and so her owners had to move to a larger property and turned it into a sanctuary for displaced and abused farm animals. Luckily now we have moved it is only about a 30 minute drive. I think I will need to take some good waterproof boots as it looks as if its going to be a wet day!
