If You Want To Meet A Man…

sq43

Well, that title got your attention, didn’t it? Not just the fact that my climbing roses are blooming.

I guess I’ll go ahead and tell this story, so I can get back to the birds and squirrels and plants I want to talk about.

sq20

Okay. This month, on two occasions, I’ve gone to the same grocery store. First I start in the produce aisle, buying strawberries for my morning cereal.

The first time a man came up and stood close by. He had a little girl with him. He was watching me, I could tell. Not me, my hands. As I turned the clear plastic containers this way and that.

Finally he said: “What are you doing?”

I can’t stand long on my foot, so I wanted this short and sweet. “I’m looking for bruised or too ripe strawberries hiding in the middle,” I told him.

“Oh.”

I continued to look. He continued to watch me. Finally…”Do you think you could pick some out for me?”

And so I did.

sq19

A week or so later, I’m in the same grocery store, on the same aisle, eying the strawberries. I hate it when I get strawberries that have hidden bad ones inside. They aren’t exactly cheap.

And here came another man. I couldn’t tell you what these men looked like, because I didn’t care. I’m not looking for a man. Nor do I want one.

“Hi.”

I put one in my basket and started looking for another. “Hi.”

“How do you know which ones to get?”

I launched into my story nearly verbatim once again.

“Oh.”

He continued to stand there. I knew where this was going. And I needed to get on my way.

“Do you want me to show you how to pick out strawberries?” I asked him.

“Why, yes, I would like that,” he said. And so I proceeded to show him how to look real close and buy the container with the fewest bruises or bright red oozing strawberries.

By the way, yesterday I went to the Walmart Market (just a smaller version with food) and shopped. Just so you know. And I don’t think there was more than one man shopping in the entire store. If you live in Tulsa and want to know where the “strawberry men” were located, just email me. Maybe that store is a magnet for men who don’t know how to pick out produce.

sq4

Now I want to tell you about these woodpeckers. There was something strange going on in woodpecker world in my back yard yesterday. They were very agitated. They would hardly light on a branch till they flew off rapidly again. No rat-a-tat-tat. Just swooping and barely lighting and swooping again.

Back and forth about a dozen of them went, making woodpecker noises.  I thought I was never going to get a photo. But finally they calmed down a bit and I did. Does anyone know anything about woodpecker behavior?

And then there’s this little sweetie pie. I know squirrels cause a lot of trouble and do damage and all that jazz. But this was just so cute.

sq14

He/she rested there for some time.

sq12

Here is my first full blooming iris. Thank you for whoever sent it to me last year!

sq9

sq39

The lemon basil has really taken off from last year. Guess it’s all the rain we’ve had. I love lemon basil.

sq35

The lamb’s ear looks very healthy right now. That won’t last when the heat hits. So I’m going to enjoy this little patch now while I can.

sq30

In a day or two, I’ll get to take photos of this beautiful iris. I thank you all for sending these plants to me last year. It was so sweet of you to help me out my first summer here.

Being Neighborly

bi37

A current look at the indoor fairy garden I planted a few months ago.

2

It took till now, May, to turn the air conditioning on. Up till now it’s been cold and freezing, seems like. What strange weather. The weather man says it will be down in the forties before the week is out.

bi41

And guess what? I have neighbor news! I told you the young Navy medic moved in where the weird neighbors lived. He has maybe been here a month.

500q

Right this very minute an older gentleman is moving in on the other side! I’m so excited that instead of loud college kids, it will be single individuals on either side of me. All with dogs.

I wrote down my pertinent information, phone number, email address, and headed right over there. Shook their hands. Said I was right here if they needed anything during the move. He said he has several houses to sell in Ardmore, so will be living here part time for now.

500h

And remember this gorgeous house across the street? A woman moved in there about a year ago. She put up an expensive fence, planted oak trees, landscaped beautifully. I went over and introduced myself. But she kept to herself. Like most everyone else around here. Have to keep telling myself: big city folks.

Now it’s up for sale. I walked over and looked at the front garden beds she tended and mulched. They were so pretty last year. Now they show signs of not having been loved. The remaining flowers are spindly and dried up. How sad.

500d

Here’s my poor front bed, neglected since I broke my ankle. I got out yesterday and sat down and cut back all the dead stalks of the various ornamental grasses I planted last year. Hopefully it will perk up in a few weeks.

500b

Here’s my iris I showed you. The first one about to unfold. This is the status today. I love to watch how flowers bud out and then slowly unfurl.

500j

Here’s the house about three houses down from me. The front yard always looks like this. Like no one loves it. But I manage to find some blooms amidst the tall weeds.

500g

Abi and Charlie are very curious about what’s going on next door. A big moving van and lots of things to watch. I’m telling you they man those two front windows like little sentinels until I close the blinds at night.

If there’s someone walking a dog down the sidewalk, it is of course a huge deal to them. They go yipping and yapping from one room’s window to the other. If the trash truck comes, oh my word they get the high-pitched barking turned up. If it’s a Fed Ex truck, they go into conniptions.

And I have no doubt the mailman hates them. He just went past the window, and they pitched a horrid fit.

500l

Oh, how I’ve yearned for good quiet neighbors that might be friendly. That’s why I miss Tyler so. I’m still in communication with my neighbors there. After talking to them on the phone, I’m on the verge of tears. It was so different there.

bi30

I want neighbors that will say hello and know their names. Neighbors that might sit a spell outside with you, watching the birds. Commenting on the weather while drinking tall sweaty glasses of iced tea.

500o

The neighbors here don’t seem interested in being very friendly. Maybe it’s because a lot of the houses are rentals and college kids move in and out.

500k

Yes, I’m lonely.

It’s an odd feeling for me. I don’t remember ever feeling lonely. But being mostly home bound for nearly a year now, I’ve really yearned for people to talk to. I’ve felt closed up in this house for so long. And I’m just now where I can get out in the yard and walk around a bit.

Not quite up to walking around the block, which has been my goal. But I just came in from walking a few doors down either way on both sides of the street. So that’s progress.

bi27

So if you have terrific neighbors like I left behind in Texas, cherish them. Spread kindness. Watch out for one another.

500s

As Mother Teresa said: “I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor. Do you know your next door neighbor?

Backyard Nature This Weekend

m32

A Navy medic who is getting ready to go to medical school moved in where the college kids were. The house on the other side is empty. The yard there needs serious attention. But I spied this little pretty dangling from a tree.

I put on my shorter ankle brace today, and had less pain. I was even able to mop the filthy floors that have been bothering me for weeks.

m2

That fact alone gave me hope and a bit of happiness. So I went into the yard with more confidence. And captured all that was transpiring.

m19

This robin is building a nest. I watched and watched until I finally found the nest. Here it is.

m21

I watched as the robin worked diligently on it. Flying out and grabbing up debris in its beak. Then coming back to the nest and working it in.

m27

This iris should fully open in a day or two. One of you guys sent it to me last year to start the garden.

m23

This one is still on the job, hard at work. Rat-a-tat-tat.

m14

Does anyone know what this little bird is? I don’t believe it’s a sparrow. It has a nest in one of the bird houses. And is anxiously waiting for me to leave the yard.

m33

Last week I was able to sit and work on this fence bed I created last year. I removed all the dead stalks and cleaned it up a bit. The climbing roses are about to bloom. They are threading their way through the fence. I didn’t get a chance to cut them back before I saw the buds.

bi47

And here are the pupsters. I’ll be back later today for Tweak It Tuesday.

Simple Delights Of My Day

Abi seems to be saying: “Ma, it’s cold outside. Can’t we just stay in bed all day?” (Very tempting, I must admit.)

Charlie seems to be of the same opinion.

But we get up, do our morning chores (or I do) and begin our day.

I wanted you to see these strange zinnias that have been growing out front. The bottoms are pink and the tops are red.

They don’t look as red in the photos. But Judy and I have commented on the strangeness of it often.

I love to see the sun shining through the layers of cannas, which are still undaunted by the sudden shift in weather.

And the lovely morning glories are tenaciously hanging on. They are a bright light in my day.
