Making Your Living Area Pet Friendly

Yesterday I looked over at the couch. I always have quilts there. There had been one where you sit. Of course it was dirty with all the rain we’ve had and Abi and Charlie’s little feet. I thought: there’s got to be a better way to cover the beige couch.

And then a light bulb went off in my head. Fitted sheets. I’m sure some of you have already figured this out. I didn’t know if it would fit. I tried the short end of the fitted sheet. Nope. I tried the long way. It could be better, but for the most part, it worked.

I first put the fitted part underneath the cushions. Then brought the other end around and put it in place. There was a lot of left over sheet, so I just tucked it the back of the couch.

Not perfect, but good enough! And it’s easier to wash sheets. No one wants to wash their quilts very often and break down the fibers.

500q11

Of course I couldn’t leave well enough alone and added a folded quilt down the middle anyway. I like the layered look, winter or summer.

I arranged the pillows and got the camera really fast. Because the first time Abi gets in a snit over something, she will get behind the pillows and nose every single one of them to the floor. Then stare at me as if to say: “Okay, what are you going to do about it?”

Today, I decided to redecorate some more, a little at a time. I have to do a few things, get in the recliner and get my feet up to let the swelling go down in my ankle. And then I get up and do some more. With the brace of course.

I have been trying to figure out what to do with this outdoor coffee table that was crowding my very small back porch. So I let the rain wash it down and I dragged it inside. It’s light-weight.

500q13

Then another light bulb went off. I’d just bring in one of the four outdoor chairs that match it. Two of them are out in the rain. One is in the shed. This was the cleanest. It would be a nice little chair for the dogs, wet feet or not.

Charlie quickly jumped up to try it out. Does he look happy? I can’t tell.

500q12

So here’s the new arrangement. Which took me the entire day to do while taking breaks to rest my ankle. I like the cozy look of seating arranged close together. And the dogs will have plenty of places to sleep. You know they rule the house.

Here’s the wicker chair facing the fireplace. They’ve gotten that cushion a little dirty. But perfection is not what you want to seek when you have fur babies of any variety. They are part of the family. And therefore they can sit any where they desire.

Backyard Nature This Weekend

m32

A Navy medic who is getting ready to go to medical school moved in where the college kids were. The house on the other side is empty. The yard there needs serious attention. But I spied this little pretty dangling from a tree.

I put on my shorter ankle brace today, and had less pain. I was even able to mop the filthy floors that have been bothering me for weeks.

m2

That fact alone gave me hope and a bit of happiness. So I went into the yard with more confidence. And captured all that was transpiring.

m19

This robin is building a nest. I watched and watched until I finally found the nest. Here it is.

m21

I watched as the robin worked diligently on it. Flying out and grabbing up debris in its beak. Then coming back to the nest and working it in.

m27

This iris should fully open in a day or two. One of you guys sent it to me last year to start the garden.

m23

This one is still on the job, hard at work. Rat-a-tat-tat.

m14

Does anyone know what this little bird is? I don’t believe it’s a sparrow. It has a nest in one of the bird houses. And is anxiously waiting for me to leave the yard.

m33

Last week I was able to sit and work on this fence bed I created last year. I removed all the dead stalks and cleaned it up a bit. The climbing roses are about to bloom. They are threading their way through the fence. I didn’t get a chance to cut them back before I saw the buds.

And here are the pupsters. I’ll be back later today for Tweak It Tuesday.

This Is What We Woke Up To

snow2

Shortly after I got up, snow started falling. I was due for a doctor’s appointment at 9:10, but had to cancel. Can’t afford any  more falls. And Judy, bless her, has been really sick with strep throat and laid up for about 10 days.

snow5

Snow is picturesque, but can be slick. I always think it’s better to stay inside and enjoy watching it fall.

snow8

Look at these two. They clearly don’t know what to think.

snow3

So we will stay inside and watch the flurries come down. Watch the snow cover the surfaces. Stay warm.

What I’m Grateful For Today

500fridogs6

What I’m grateful for today, and every day, are these two silly munchkins. They are my 24/7 companions. My faithful friends. Don’t know what I’d do without them.

Simple Delights Of My Day

Abi seems to be saying: “Ma, it’s cold outside. Can’t we just stay in bed all day?” (Very tempting, I must admit.)

Charlie seems to be of the same opinion.

But we get up, do our morning chores (or I do) and begin our day.

I wanted you to see these strange zinnias that have been growing out front. The bottoms are pink and the tops are red.

They don’t look as red in the photos. But Judy and I have commented on the strangeness of it often.

I love to see the sun shining through the layers of cannas, which are still undaunted by the sudden shift in weather.

And the lovely morning glories are tenaciously hanging on. They are a bright light in my day.

Rain Clouds, Butterflies, And Fast Squirrels

It is one of those gray days where the sun is totally obscured by heavy bulbous rain clouds.

Yet Charlie Ross is totally fixated on this wily squirrel.

It runs across the power lines at lightning speed, a big nut clamped in its mouth.

I love the way the purple morning glories look thrusting up through the chartreuse sweet potato vine. What a divine contrast!

Here’s that squirrel, safely ensconced in some tree branches, where Charlie can’t see him. He is ready to have his treat.

Still, mid-September, the vines wind up everywhere they can grasp onto, reaching toward the sky.

Still the butterflies are hovering over end of season flowers.

The Look Of Love

The other day I finally caught a photo of a beautiful butterfly. Made my whole day. The beauty of a butterfly to me is unparalleled.

I was so surprised to see this orange flower atop my canna the other day. What a brilliant shade of orange.

I have always thought a bloom, as yet unfurled, is just as magnificent as the flower it becomes.

This is what we call Abi smiling. There could be different interpretations. Let me show you why she’s smiling…

And why Charlie seems so content…

Because their JuJu is here playing with them. And they love their JuJu (known to all of you as Judy).

And that, my friends, is what I call the look of pure love.
